  • Proactive human factors engineering analysis in space station design using the computer manikin jack
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: SAE Digital Human Modeling for Design and Engineering International Conference and Exposition.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this case study, a human factors analysis was carried out in the preliminary design phase of the Cupola, a European Space Agency (ESA) module for manned space flights for the International Space Station (ISS). The manikin software Jack® was used early in the design process before any flight hardware production. All Cupola astronaut tasks were evaluated in a virtual environment of the Cupola. Methodological aspects concerning the analysis are described, e.g. file processing, use of coordinate systems and the use of a prior task analysis. Results show that the thorough manikin analysis supported with the hierarchical task analysis results, was an important help in the design process.

  • A polarized discrete ordinate scattering model for simulations of limb and nadir long-wave measurements in 1-D/3-D spherical atmospheres
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 109:24, s. 24207-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes one of the scattering algorithms of the three-dimensional polarized radiative transfer model ARTS (Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator) which has been implemented to study for example the influence of cirrus clouds on microwave limb sounding. The model uses the DOIT (Discrete Ordinate Iterative) method to solve the vector radiative transfer equation. The implementation of a discrete ordinate method is challenging due to the spherical geometry of the model atmosphere which is required for the simulation of limb radiances. The involved numerical issues, which are grid optimization and interpolation methods, are discussed in this paper. Scattering simulations are presented for limb- and down-looking geometries, for one-dimensional and three-dimensional spherical atmospheres. They show the impact of cloud particle size, shape, and orientation on the brightness temperatures and on the polarization of microwave radiation in the atmosphere. The cloud effect is much larger for limb radiances than for nadir radiances. Particle size is a very important parameter in all simulations. The polarization signal is negligible for simulations with completely randomly oriented particles, whereas for horizontally aligned particles with random azimuthal orientation the polarization signal is significant. Moreover, the effect of particle shape is only relevant for oriented cloud particles. The simulations show that it is essential to use a three-dimensional scattering model for inhomogeneous cloud layers.

  • Characterization of a CMOS current-steering DAC using state-space models
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Circuits and Systems, 2000. Proceedings of the 43rd IEEE Midwest Symposium on. - : IEEE. - 0780364759 ; , s. 668-671 vol.2
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Performance limitations on current-steering digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are due to finite output impedances, nonideal switches, parasitic capacitances, matching, etc. In this work we present a dynamic state-space model of a 14-bit current-steering DAC which includes dynamic nonidealities. Simulation results are presented and compared to measurement results. The model can be used for fast performance estimation of D/A converters

  • The Odin satellite - I. Radiometer design and test
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 402:3, s. L27-L34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Sub-millimetre and Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) is the main instrument on the Swedish, Canadian, Finnish and French spacecraft Odin. It consists of a 1.1 metre diameter telescope with four tuneable heterodyne receivers covering the ranges 486-504 GHz and 541-581 GHz, and one fixed at 118.75 GHz together with backends that provide spectral resolution from 150 kHz to 1 MHz. This Letter describes the Odin radiometer, its operation and performance with the data processing and calibration described in Paper II.

  • Modelling substorm chorus events in terms of dispersive azimuthal drift
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 22:12, s. 4311-4327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Substorm Chorus Event (SCE) is a radio phenomenon observed on the ground after the onset of the substorm expansion phase. It consists of a band of VLF chorus with rising upper and lower cutoff frequencies. These emissions are thought to result from Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance between whistler mode waves and energetic electrons which drift into a ground station's field of view from an injection site around midnight. The increasing frequency of the emission envelope has been attributed to the combined effects of energy dispersion due to gradient and curvature drifts, and the modification of resonance conditions and variation of the half-gyrofrequency cutoff resulting from the radial component of the E x B drift. A model is presented which accounts for the observed features of the SCE in terms of the growth rate of whistler mode waves due to anisotropy in the electron distribution. This model provides an explanation for the increasing frequency of the SCE lower cutoff, as well as reproducing the general frequency-time signature of the event. In addition, the results place some restrictions on the injected particle source distribution which might lead to a SCE.

  • A novel depleted semi-insulating silicon material for high frequency applications
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Progress in SOI Structures and Devices Operating at Extreme Conditions. Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop. ; , s. 333-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wafer bonding has been used to manufacture a silicon material intended as substrate for high frequency applications. The space charge regions surrounding the bonded silicon/silicon interface deplete the silicon thereby causing semiinsulating behaviour at high frequencies. The material has been characterized electrically for frequencies up to 40 GHz using metal transmission lines and crosstalk structures on its surface. Measurements on the depleted silicon/silicon structures has been compared to similar measurements on bulk silicon wafers of different resistivities, SIMOX wafers and quartz. The results show that the material has potential to be used at high frequencies
