  • Bridging the Terahertz Gap : Photonics-assisted Free-Space Communications from the Submillimeter-Wave to the Mid-Infrared

    • Since about one and half centuries ago, at the dawn of modern communications, the radio and the optics have been two separate electromagnetic spectrum regions to carry data. Differentiated by their generation/detection methods and propagation properties, the two paths have evolved almost independently until today. The optical technologies dominate the long-distance and high-speed terrestrial wireline communications through fiber-optic telecom systems, whereas the radio technologies have mainly dominated the short- to medium-range wireless scenarios. Now, these two separate counterparts are both facing a sign of saturation in their respective roadmap horizons, particularly in the segment of free-space communications. The optical technologies are extending into the mid-wave and long-wave infrared (MWIR and LWIR) regimes to achieve better propagation performance through the dynamic atmospheric channels. Radio technologies strive for higher frequencies like the millimeter-wave (MMW) and sub-terahertz (sub-THz) to gain broader bandwidth. The boundary between the two is becoming blurred and intercrossed. During the past few years, we witnessed technological breakthroughs in free-space transmission supporting very high data rates, many achieved with the assistance of photonics. This paper focuses on such photonics-assisted free-space communication technologies in both the lower and upper sides of the THz gap and provides a detailed review of recent research and development activities on some of the key enabling technologies. Our recent experimental demonstrations of high-speed free-space transmissions in both frequency regions are also presented as examples to show the system requirements for device characteristics and digital signal processing (DSP) performance.

  • Output voltage synthesis of a modular battery system based on a cascaded h-bridge multilevel inverter topology for vehicle propulsion: Multilevel pulse width modulation vs. fundamental selective harmonic elimination

    • Lately, the research interest for modular battery systems has increased due to the possibility of a better utilization of individual battery packs/cells and the steadily reducing costs of low voltage power electronics. This paper deals with the output voltage synthesis of a modular battery system based on a seven level Cascaded H-bridge (CHB) inverter topology used in a small passenger vehicle. Two methods are considered, Multilevel Pulse Width Modulation (MPWM) and Fundamental Selective Harmonic Elimination (FSHE). Using simulations, the inverter and battery losses, as well as the current THD, are used to assess the effectiveness of both techniques for the broad operating range of a vehicle's drivetrain. It has been shown that FSHE cannot be applied at a modulation index below 0.25, because of the high current THD (> > 5%). Exceeding a modulation index of 0.25, FSHE reduces the battery and inverter losses in comparison to MPWM, while maintaining an acceptable current THD. Operating at higher speeds, FSHE achieves an even better current THD than MPWM. Consequently, it seems reasonable to use a hybrid modulation technique, using MPWM at low and FSHE at higher speeds, respectively. The exact boundary between MPWM and FSHE can vary in accordance with the individual optimization weightings of current THD and drivetrain efficiency.

  • Affordable identification and modelling of uncertain design specifications when introducing new technologies in space applications

    • When introducing new technologies in space products, both the uncertainties regarding technology feasibility and the way in which the technology affects the product development process hinder the early establishment of appropriate engineering specifications. Failing to establish product specifications during conceptual stages leads to problems discovered during later phases of the product development process, when design and process changes are the most expensive. This thesis proposes a digital holistic design platform and a method of constraints replacement for a cost- and time-efficient identification of specification uncertainties when designing space products with new technologies. The digital platform and methods have been developed and tested through industrial case studies featuring the introduction of new technologies for on-orbit applications. Most of these studies were performed in the context of, but are not limited to, the introduction of additive manufacturing. The platform and proposed constraints replacement method are based on function modeling strategies (for modeling product architecture and requirements during conceptual design phases), coupled with activity modeling strategies (for modeling the impact of product architecture on product development schedules and costs). The platform and method enable the identification and assessment of unknown uncertainties, thereby reducing the likelihood of expensive redesign processes during later development phases. Moreover, they enable the inclusion of multidisciplinary design trade-offs during conceptual stages and encourage the establishment of a culture of uncertainty seeking and effective data documentation and transfer.

  • Mitigation of Ground Clutter in Airborne Bistatic Radar Systems

    • Space-Time Adaptive Processing is a commonly used technique to mitigate ground clutter reflections from an airborne radar system. It estimates a covariance matrix based on spatial and temporal information, and the estimate is thereafter used to suppress the ground clutter. In a side-looking monostatic radar system, the estimate is rather straight forward based on radar observations. However, in this paper, we consider bistatic systems where the power of adaptivity is limited due to nonstationarity of the ground clutter reflections over the range dimension. To overcome this, scenario dependent transformations are commonly used when forming the sample covariance matrix. In this contribution we instead investigate a detector where the clutter covariance matrix is determined from the geometry of the bistatic scenario. Using a Monte-Carlo simulation, we investigate how sensitive the detector is to errors in the assumed geometry, and compare this with state-of-the-art adaptive methods. The results indicates that a good clutter rejection is obtained for errors of order 103 m for assumed transmitter position and 100km/h for assumed transmitter velocity.

  • The significance of planning and management of the subsurface to achieve sustainable cities

    • Introduction: The subsurface is the foundation upon which all cities rest. But the subsurface is not only a construction basis which provide physical space for infrastructure and the possibility to create a better surface living environment: the subsurface is a multifunctional natural resource. Apart from physical space, it provides water, energy, materials, habitats for ecosystems, support for surface life, and a repository for cultural heritage and geological archives. Currently, the subsurface is often utilised according to the “first-come-first-served” principle, which hinders possibilities to take strategic decisions on prioritisation and optimisation of competing subsurface uses, as well as fair inter- and intragenerational distribution of limited natural resources. A great disadvantage is the invisibility of the subsurface and consequently a lack of understanding of it as a multifunctional resource: the recently launched concept of geosystem services could help mitigate its underrating. Methods: In order to better acknowledge and lift forward the significance of the subsurface in achieving a sustainable future, the 17 SDGs are scrutinized in relation to the resources of subsurface, and specifically how better planning and management of the subsurface can contribute in achieving the goals. Results: Subsurface planning and management is relevant to at least seven (3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13) out of seventeen SDGs. Although the subsurface is not explicitly mentioned in the SDGs (except for aquifers), the subsurface can significantly contribute in achieving several of these goals. Conclusions: Sound planning and management of the subsurface can support the achievement of the mapped SDGs in various ways. The subsurface must be recognised as a precious and multifunctional resource which require careful planning and sensitive management in accordance with its potential and its value to society.   • Does Form follow Function? Connecting Function Modelling and Geometry Modelling for Design Space Exploration

    • The aerospace industry, representative of industries developing complex products, faces challenges from changes in user behaviour, legislation, environmental policy. Meeting these challenges will require the development of radically new products. Radically new technologies and solutions need to be explored, investigated, and integrated into existing aerospace component architectures. The currently available design space exploration (DSE) methods, mainly based around computer-aided design (CAD) modelling, do not provide sufficient support for this exploration. These methods often lack a representation of the product’s architecture in relation to its design rationale (DR)—they do not illustrate how form follows function. Hence, relations between different functions and solutions, as well as how novel ideas relate to the legacy design, are not captured. In particular, the connection between a product’s function and the embodiment of its solution is not captured in the applied product modelling approaches, and can therefore not be used in the product development process. To alleviate this situation, this thesis presents a combined function and geometry-modelling approach with automated generation of CAD models for variant concepts. The approach builds on enhanced function means (EF-M) modelling for representation of the design space and the legacy design’s position in it. EF-M is also used to capture novel design solutions and reference them to the legacy design’s architecture. A design automation (DA) approach based on modularisation of the CAD model, which in turn is based on the functional decomposition of the product concepts, is used to capture geometric product information. A combined function-geometry object model captures the relations between functions, solutions, and geometry. This allows for CAD models of concepts based on alternative solutions to be generated. The function- and geometry-exploration (FGE) approach has been developed and tested in collaboration with an aerospace manufacturing company. A proof-of-concept tool implementing the approach has been realised. The approach has been validated for decomposition, innovation, and embodiment of new concepts in multiple studies involving three different aerospace suppliers. Application of FGE provides knowledge capture and representation, connecting the teleological and geometric aspects of the product. Furthermore, it supports the exploration of increasingly novel solutions, enabling the coverage of a wider area of the design space. The connection between the modelling domains addresses a research gap for the “integration of function architectures with CAD models”. While the FGE approach has been tested in laboratory environments as well as in applied product development projects, further development is needed to refine CAD integration and user experience and integrate additional modelling domains.

    • This paper provides a genealogy of the emergence of a common EU flood policy, including the scope and direction of this policy. Noticing how EU policy proposes green infrastructure (associated with using nature as a buffer zone in managing floods) as an alternative to grey infrastructure (implying fixed installations of concrete and cement), this paper adopts the theoretical lens of the so-called infrastructural turn, which advocates a relational investigation of infrastructure. By engaging this approach, the paper shows how flood infrastructure can contain very different compositions of (unruly) water and (settled) land. A narrative of a historically strong focus on guarding society from the powerful forces of nature through a fixed line of defense is increasingly giving way to more muddy states—quite literally—where society is expected to learn to live with flooding and show ecological consideration. To capture the EU’s, and especially the European Commission’s efforts to establish a pan-European flood infrastructure that accommodates this turn, the concepts of de- and re-infrastructuring are developed. These concepts act as heuristic devices to capture how policy performs some combinations between water and land as constituting an attractive and functional flood infrastructure, but constitutes other infrastructural relations of the aquatic and the terrestrial as undesirable and, hence, as malfunctioning. This performative act of distinguishing between what constitutes “good and proper” versus “bad and undesirable” infrastructure is referred to as a politics of infrastructure.

  • Subsurface planning: Towards a common understanding of the subsurface as a multifunctional resource

    • In response to powerful trends in technology, resource and land supply and demand, socioeconomics and geopolitics, cities are likely to increase use of the subsurface in the near future. Indeed, the subsurface and its appropriate use have been put forward as being of crucial importance if we are to achieve resilient and sustainable cities. In recent years, quite apart from being seen primarily as a construction basis to provide physical space for infrastructure and to create a better surface living environment, the subsurface has been recognised as a multifunctional natural resource, one which provides physical space, water, energy, materials, habitats for ecosystems, support for surface life, and a repository for cultural heritage and geological archives. Currently, the subsurface is often utilised according to the “first-come-first-served” principle, which hinders possibilities to take strategic decisions on prioritisation and optimisation of competing subsurface uses, as well as fair inter- and intragenerational distribution of limited natural resources. Taking a broad international perspective, this paper investigates the subsurface as a multifunctional resource from five focal points: (1) what professionals with different backgrounds mean when using different terms related to the subsurface; (2) how professionals describe the subsurface and its multiple resources, functions and services; (3) how planning of subsurface use is supported in policy and regulations; (4) how the subsurface is included in the planning process; and (5) frameworks that can support decision-making on responsible use of the subsurface. The study reveals that the subsurface must be recognised (not only by scientists but also by decision- and policy-makers and other stakeholders) as a precious and multifunctional resource requiring careful planning and sensitive management in accordance with its potential and its value to society. Utilisation of the different subsurface functions to yield services requires careful planning and a framework to support decision-makers in achieving a balance between utilisation and preservation, and between the subsurface functions themselves in the case of outright utilisation. Further, to facilitate the necessary change towards transdisciplinary work settings in the planning process and form a platform for knowledge exchange and capacity building, there is an urgent need for a common language, i.e. mutually understandable terminology, and a common understanding, i.e. an all-inclusive view on the subsurface as a complex multifunctional resource.

  • Multi-point design of parallel hybrid aero engines

    • A parallel hybrid configuration is a feasible means to reduce fuel consumption of gas turbines propelling aircraft. It introduces an electric drive on one of the spools of the gas turbine, typically the low pressure spool. The electric drive is supplied by a battery, which can also be charged when excess power is available (for instance during conditions requiring handling bleed in conventional designs). It also requires a thermal management system to dissipate heat away from electric components. While the scientific literature describes parallel hybrid studies and anticipated benefits assuming various future entry into service dates, there is limited information on the design of the gas turbine component of such a system. For conventional gas turbines, multi-point design schemes are used. This paper describes, in a consistent fashion and based on a formalized notation, how such multi-point design schemes are applied to parallel hybrid aero engines. It interprets published approaches, fills gaps in methodology descriptions with meaningful assumptions and summarizes design intent. It also discusses cycle designs generated by different methodologies based on the same cycle model. Results show that closure equations prescribing boost power can be preferable over closure equations prescribing temperature ratios for uniqueness and engineering intuitiveness while the latter can be beneficial in a second step for design space exploration.
