  • The nonlinear behaviour of a pantograph current collector suspension
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1999 ASME Design Engineering Technical Conferences.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pantograph-catenary system is a critical component for trains required to run at higher speeds. The pantograph often includes nonlinear characteristics and the scope of this work is to investigate if nonlinear dynamic phenomena can occur in an existing design. A model of a pantograph suspension subsystem has been developed according to physical parameter values of the head suspension of the Schunk WBL88/X2 pantograph, providing electric power to the Swedish high-speed train X2. Studies of the system response for different force excitation show both harmonic, subharmonic and chaotic behaviour for the investigated parameter regions.

  • The Volvo Uddevalla Plant and Interpretations of Industrial Design Processes
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Integrated Manufacturing Systems. ; 9:5, s. 279 - 295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explains exactly how the design of the Volvo Automobile Company's assembly plant in Uddevalla gradually was forced into the final unorthodox (real-life) assembly system, this due to a number of successive sub-decisions. The logic of the projection process was inescapable leading into practicing of the parallel product flow assembly system design (small parallel workgroups were all of them completing total automobiles (this at an extensively long work cycle times) (the minimum competence required for the operators performing assembly work were 1/4 of an automobile).  This was, in fact, a design that was international unique. The Volvo Truck Company's so-called assembly docks located at the Tuve plant in Gothenburg, was the other such sociotechnically advance (real-life) assembly system (i.e. used for completing heavy truck chassis) (two of the tree authors were responsible for both these two (real-life) efforts by means of having an experimental workshop outside Chalmers University of Technology for nine years – though naturally with extensive help and active support from both these two companies, as well as by research funds (i.e. The Swedish Work Environment Fund and later on also by The Swedish Transport and Communication Research Board, i.e. at Chalmers than this shop was closed down) (it ought to be mentioned that this article has got an academic distinction from the journal for being the year’s most interesting article).

  • From job-less growth to growth-with-less-jobs: Employment and equity impact of technical and organisational change
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Science and Public Policy. - 1471-5430 .- 0302-3427. ; 23:1, s. 27-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New technical innovations in the form of new production technologies are known to affect productivity, but organisational innovations and new ways of designing products have now been found to have a profound influence on productivity. These innovations have moved the industrialised countries into a stage in which industrial growth is accompanied by the continuous reduction in industrial employment. This development will greatly influence our society and put stringent demands on our political decision-making apparatus to avoid a growth in the 'wealth of nations' going hand-in-hand with a growth in poverty.

  • Modelling and simulation of catenary-pantograph interaction
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Vehicle System Dynamics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0042-3114 .- 1744-5159. ; 33:suppl 1, s. 490-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelling and simulation of the dynamic behaviour of catenary-pantograph interaction is an important part when assessing the capability of a current collection system for railway traffic. The large variation in infrastructure characteristics in different countries and railway companies, different types of traffic, designs of pantographs etc. makes it almost impossible to develop a final simulation model of such a system. Instead, it would be favourable to have a tool that has the ability to set up models of such systems, choose relevant detail of the models, run simulations and finally visualize the results. To make the tool useful for engineers, design experts as well as simulation experts, the functionality of the tool must be worked out. Aspects on computer simulation such as developed models, simulation methods and computer tools are presented. The aim is to develop a scenario that considers different designs, models, solution methods and user levels. The scenario focuses on how to structure the use of simulation of dynamics in catenary-pantograph development. A scenario is sketched built on different user levels, a modular structure and a structure for information management

  • An integrated design evaluation system supporting thermal-structural iterations
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Concurrent Engineering - Research and Applications. - 1063-293X .- 1531-2003. ; 6:3, s. 179-187
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the design of high temperature components, design evaluation often requires an iterative procedure between thermal fluid and thermal structural simulations An integrated computer system providing an iterative environment for the multidisciplinary simulations re quired has been developed. The system supports iterations between thermal fluid and thermal structural simulations using two different commercial simulation packages. Traditionally, fluid and structural analysis have been simulated separately and analysis of coupled prob lems has required special, multidisciplinary simulation packages which are seldom used in early stages of design. Improving the infrastruc ture for data exchange between separate computer applications is one way to significantly reduce the lead time for design iterations. This reduction in lead-time allows multidisciplinary effects to be accounted for in early stages of design. The design system is demonstrated on an exhaust manifold, where the thermal interaction between fluid and structure is of significant importance. The commercial simulation tools have been integrated to demonstrate the effect of automised data flow on design methodology, i.e , de sign iterations. This integration method makes use of existing features in the simulation packages and uses an export file format as the neu tral exchange format. In this way, the integrated system is simple and fast to develop which is preferred in small prototype systems and de velopment project Database integration supports a tighter integration, but requires more development effort. For design systems, where several design tools need to communicate, standardised information management procedures are preferable, following the ideas of the STEP framework.

  • A method to analyze requirements on product technology
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Product development in engineering education. - Halmstad : Högskolan i Halmstad. - 9163050056 ; , s. 35-44
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A structured method for selection of technology requirements is described which exemplifies a concept for continuos development of organization, coworkers and methods. Using a process oriented view for product planning, needs for improved technologies have been identified at two business centers at Volvo Aero Corporation.Structured analysis is introduced by using a simplified QFD analysisapproach, illustrating the key principles of structured analysis. The objective of the analysis is to obtain overview of technology requirements and then define detailed technology programs. The examples discussed are on methods and technology for gas turbine high temperature components. The technology improvements are then continuously integrated with ongoing product development.
