  • Dual-wavelength digital holography : single-shot shape evaluation using speckle displacements and regularization
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied Optics. - : Optical Society of America. - 1559-128X .- 2155-3165 .- 0003-6935 .- 1539-4522. ; 53:1, s. 123-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the possibility of evaluating the shape of a free-form object in comparison with its shape prescribed by a CAD model. Measurements are made based on a single-shot recording using dual-wavelength holography with a synthetic wavelength of 1.4 mm. Each hologram is numerically propagated to different focus planes and correlated. The result is a vector field of speckle displacements that is linearly dependent on the local distance between the measured surface and the focus plane. From these speckle displacements, a gradient field of the measured surface is extracted through a proportional relationship. The gradient field obtained from the measurement is then aligned to the shape of the CAD model using the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm and regularization. Deviations between the measured shape and the CAD model are found from the phase difference field, giving a high precision shape evaluation. The phase differences and the CAD model are also used to find a representation of the measured shape. The standard deviation of the measured shape relative the CAD model varies between 7 and 19 μm, depending on the slope.

  • INNOTRACK: Concluding technical report
  • 2010
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The track structure, rails, switches and crossings account for more than 50% of maintenance and renewal costs for the rail industry. To improve the competitiveness of rail transportation, the cost-efficiency of these areas needs to be addressed. This the background to INNOTRACK, an integrated research project funded by the European Commission’s 6th research framework pro- gramme. Running from September 2006 to December 2009, INN- OTRACK has developed a multitude of innovative solutions in the areas of track substructure, rails & welds, and switches & crossings. The solutions have been assessed from technical, logistics and life cycle cost point of views. This Concluding Technical Report of INNOTRACK includes an overview of the project. It further details implementable results, and clusters them into ”highlight” areas. In addition, the book acts as a ”key” to the vast amount of information from INNOTRACK: All sections refer to project reports where more information can be found.

  • Single shot dual-wavelength digital holography : calibration based on speckle displacements
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Optomechatronics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1559-9612 .- 1559-9620. ; 8:4, s. 326-339
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a calibration method which allows single shot dual wavelength online shape measurement in a disturbed environment. Effects of uncontrolled carrier frequency filtering are discussed as well. We demonstrate that phase maps and speckle displacements can be recovered free of chromatic aberrations. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a single shot dual wavelength calibration is reported by defining a criteria to make the spatial filtering automatic avoiding the problems of manual methods. The procedure is shown to give shape accuracy of 35 µm with negligible systematic errors using a synthetic wavelength of 1.1 mm.

  • D-optimality of non-regular design spaces by using a Bayesian modification and a hybrid method
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Structural and multidisciplinary optimization (Print). - : Springer. - 1615-147X .- 1615-1488. ; 42:1, s. 73-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work a hybrid method of a genetic algorithm  and sequential linear programming is suggested to obtain a D-optimal design of experiments. Regular as well as non-regular design spaces are considered. A D-optimal design of experiments maximizes the determinant of the information matrix, which appears in the normal equation. It is known that D-optimal design of experiments sometimes include duplicate design points. This is, of course, not preferable since duplicates do not add any new information to the response surface approximation and the computational effort is therefore wasted. In this work a Bayesian modification, where higher order terms are added to the response surface approximation, is used in case of duplicates in the design of experiments. In such manner, the draw-back with duplicates might be eliminated. The D-optimal problem, which is obtained by using the Bayesian modification, is then solved by a hybrid method. A hybrid method of a genetic algorithm that generates a starting point for sequential linear programming is developed. The genetic algorithm performs genetic operators such as cross-over and mutation on a binary version of the design of experiments, while the real valued version is used to evaluate the fitness. Next, by taking the gradient of the objective, a LP-problem is formulated which is solved by an interior point method that is available in Matlab. This is repeated in a sequence until convergence is reached. The hybrid method is tested for four numerical examples. Results from the numerical examples show a very robust convergence to a global optimum. Furthermore, the results show that the problem with duplicates is eliminated by using the Bayesian modification.

  • Robustness of residual stresses in castings and an improved process window
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference 2009. - New York, N.Y. : ASME Press. - 9780791849026 ; , s. 1081-1091, s. 1081-1091
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work the robustness of residual stresses in finite element simulations with respect to deviations in mechanical parameters in castings is evaluated. Young's modulus, the thermal expansion coefficient and the hardening are the studied parameters. A 2D finite element model of a stress lattice is used. The robustness is evaluated by comparing purely finite element based Monte Carlo simulations and Monte Carlo simulations based on linear and quadratic response surfaces. Young's modulus, the thermal expansion coefficient and the hardening are assumed to be normal distributed with a standard deviation that is 10% of their nominal value at different temperatures. In this work an improved process window is also suggested to show the robustness graphically. By using this window it is concluded that least robustness is obtained for high hardening values in combination to deviations in Young's modulus and the thermal expansion coefficient. It is also concluded that quadratic response surface based Monte Carlo simulations substitute finite element based Monte Carlo simulations satisfactory. Furthermore, the standard deviation of the responses are evaluated analytically by using the Gauss formula, and are compared to results from Monte Carlo simulations. The analytical solutions are accurate as long as the Gauss formula is not utilized close to a stationary point.

  • The Influence of Sliding Friction on Optimal Topologies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Recent Advances in Contact Mechanics. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642339677 ; , s. 327-336
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper the influence of sliding friction on optimal topologies is investigated and some preliminary results are presented. A design domain unilaterally constrained by a spinning support is considered. Most recently, Stromberg and Klarbring have developed methods for performing topology optimization of linear elastic structures with unilateral contact conditions. In this works sliding friction is also included in the contact model. In such manner it is possible to study how the spinning of the support will influence the optimal design. This was not possible before. The support is modeled by Signorini's contact conditions and Coulomb's law of friction. Signorini's contact conditions are regularized by a smooth approximation, which must not be confused with the well-known penalty approach. The state of the system, which is defined by the equilibrium equations and the smooth approximation, is solved by a Newton method. The design parametrization is obtained by using the SIMP-model. The minimization of compliance for a limited value of volume is considered. The optimization problem is solved by a nested approach where the equilibrium equations are linearized and sensitivities are calculated by the adjoint method. The problem is then solved by SLP, where the LP-problem is solved by an interior point method that is available in the package of Mat lab. In order to avoid mesh-dependency and patterns of checker-boards the sensitivities are filtered by Sigmund's filter. The method is implemented by using Mat lab and Visual Fortran, where the Fortran code is linked to Mat lab as mex-files. The implementation is done for a general design domain in 2D by using fully integrated isoparametric elements. The implementation seems to be very efficient and robust.

  • Topology optimization of structures in unilateral contact
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Structural and multidisciplinary optimization (Print). - : Springer. - 1615-147X .- 1615-1488. ; 41:1, s. 57-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a general framework for topology optimization of structures in unilateral contact is developed. A linear elastic structure that is unilaterally constrained by rigid supports is considered. The supports are modeled by Signorini's contact conditions which in turn are treated by the augmented Lagrangian approach as well as by a smooth approximation. The latter approximation must not be confused with the well-known penalty approach. The state of the system, which is defined by the equilibrium equation and the two different contact formulations, is solved by a Newton method. The design parametrization is obtained by using the SIMP-model. The minimization of compliance for a limited value of volume is considered. The optimization problems are solved by SLP. This is done by using a nested approach where the state equations are linearized and sensitivities are calculated by the adjoint method. In order to avoid mesh-dependency the sensitivities are filtered by Sigmund's filter. The final LP-problem is solved by an interior point method that is available in Matlab. The implementation is done for a general design domain in 2D as well as in 3D by using fully integrated isoparametric elements. The implementation seems to be very efficient and robust.

  • On performance enhancement of parallel kinematic machine
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing. - : Springer. - 0956-5515 .- 1572-8145. ; 24:2, s. 267-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a spatial three degrees of freedom (DOF) parallel kinematic machine enhanced by a passive leg and a web-based remote control system. First, the geometric model of the parallel kinematic machine is addressed. In the mechanism, a fourth kinematic link-a passive link connecting the base center to the moving platform center-is introduced. Each of the three parallel limbs is actuated by one prismatic joint, respectively. The additional link has three passive DOF, namely two rotations around x and y axes and one translation along z axis. With the existence of this link, the unwanted motion of the tool (located in the moving platform) is constrained. The fourth link also enhances the global stiffness of the structure and distributes the torque from machining. With the kinematic model, a web-based remote control approach is applied. The concept of the web-based remote manipulation approach is introduced and the principles behind the method are explored in detail. Finally, a remote manipulation is demonstrated to the proposed structure using web-based remote control concept.

  • Brain tumor modeling : glioma growth and interaction with chemotherapy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Graphic and Image Processing (ICGIP 2011). - : SPIE. ; 8285
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In last decade increasingly mathematical models of tumor growths have been studied, particularly on solid tumors which growth mainly caused by cellular proliferation. In this paper we propose a modified model to simulate the growth of gliomas in different stages. Glioma growth is modeled by a reaction-advection-diffusion. We begin with a model of untreated gliomas and continue with models of polyclonal glioma following chemotherapy. From relatively simple assumptions involving homogeneous brain tissue bounded by a few gross anatomical landmarks (ventricles and skull) the models have been expanded to include heterogeneous brain tissue with different motilities of glioma cells in grey and white matter. Tumor growth is characterized by a dangerous change in the control mechanisms, which normally maintain a balance between the rate of proliferation and the rate of apoptosis (controlled cell death). Result shows that this model closes to clinical finding and can simulate brain tumor behavior properly.

  • Anti-vibration Engineering in Internal Turning Using a Carbon Nanocomposite Damping Coating Produced by PECVD Process
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of materials engineering and performance (Print). - : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1059-9495 .- 1544-1024. ; 23:2, s. 506-517
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Machining dynamic stability has been enhanced through a damping coating based on a novel carbon-based nanocomposite material. The coating was synthesized using a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method, and deposited on to the round-shank boring bar used for internal turning and tested during machining. Comparisons between an uncoated and a coated boring bar were carried out at 0.25 mm and 0.5 mm depth of cut using a five times length to diameter ratio overhang, which are typical conditions known to generate detrimental mechanical vibrations. From sound pressure measurement it was found that the measured absolute sound level during process could be reduced by about 90% when using the tool coated with damping layer. Surface roughness measurements of the processed workpiece showed decreased Ra values from approximately 3-6 mu m to less than 2 mu m (and in 50% of the cases < 1 mu m) when comparing an uncoated standard tool with its coated counterpart. Moreover, it was found that the addition of an anti-vibration coating did not adversely affect other tool properties, such as rigidity and modularity.
