- Stadsbyggnad och samhällsplanering är som framgår av förordet inget neutralt område utan en praktik och ett kunskapsområde med stora implikationer för människors vardagsliv liksom för samhället i stort. Det handlar om att få platser att fungera bra för dem som bor, arbetar eller på annat sätt är involverade i platsen, och där i sammanhanget ’fungera’ avser hela skalan från individens möjligheter till självförverkligande, till det för staden och samhället gemensamma bästa. Över tid förändrar sig förutsättningarna och platser som en gång formgivits i samklang med sin tid behöver i stadsbyggnadens och samhällsplaneringens praktik omtolkas och ges nya innebörder för att kunna leva upp till den nya tidens krav, utan att för den skull ge avkall på grundläggande överenskommelser i samhällskontraktet. Platser i praktiken kommer då att handla om social hållbarhet och om vilken typ av stad vi vill ha i vilken typ av samhälle. En komponent i detta handlar om livskraften i det lokala offentliga rummet och de villkor som gäller där oavsett om detta är beläget i stadens centrum eller i något av stadens ytterområden, där mycket av stadens liv levs. Det är detta lokala offentliga rum som den här rapporten ämnar bidra till att belysa.

- Spatial and material form, the tools and modes of architects, participate in shaping our lives in many ways which are not detirminate but strongly influential. One of the ways in which it does this is by spatial configuration - that is, the setup of relations between spaces - which responds to and describes social relations as well as potentials, possibilities, restrictions, and suggestions. This both through practical and communicative means, and in a great many ways. Research at sad tries to focus more specifically at these components of the physical environment, and some intriguing results have been produced both when it comes to buildings and urban environments. Critical for these findingshave been the involvement of different theories and methods that complement one another, and the development of new models of analysis. This presentation aims to briefly present some of these models and results.

- [Foreword to the printed proceedings]The Space Syntax symposia are by now recognised as an established tradition in international architectural research, a tradition that combines high scientific rigour with high relevance for architectural practice. It will be the primary aim of the organisers of the Stockholm symposium to carry on this tradition.Still, each symposium has its own flavour due to continuous changes in the global society, but also due to the local context of each symposium. We believe that contemporary Stockholm presents a situation in architecture and urban design of great international relevance. Stockholm is often described as a successful city in these fields, but it is a success to a high degree relying on a top-down approach to architectural and urban development. From a local horizon it is becoming obvious how Stockholm needs to learn from the kind of bottom-up urban processes often prevalent in cities less often described as successful.To a large degree it is the study of such self-organising and emergent processes in buildings and cities that is at the heart of Space Syntax research. Since this implies an exploration of the field of the possible in architectural and urban design, one here also finds the reason for the high relevance of Space Syntax for architectural practice. We hope that this tension between top-down and bottom-up approaches in architecture and urban design will be a lasting memory of the Stockholm symposium.

- Kalk har använts i Norden alltsedan det medeltida kyrkobyggandet. Den fortsatta utvecklingen har varit likartad i hela Norden men regionala variationer förekommer. Byggnader murades fram till 1950-talet i huvudsak av tegel och kalkbruk.Efter 1950-talet blev kalk undanträngt av cementsom har visat sig dåligt anpassat till äldre murverk. Brottet i traditionen har lett till en kris i byggnadsvården och kulturvården.Idag är intresset åter väckt både för kalk och murat nybyggande. Boken redovisar dagens läge (1999) inför 2000-talet.

- The notion that we are becoming more competitive and individualistic is diffused in today Sweden, argued to be a positive or negative outcome of the social, political and economical changes of the last decades. So is also in the construction sector. The call for competitive building outcomes has driven many technical innovations while the lack of cooperation is claimed to be the principal cause of non-sustainable development. Hence the dichotomy must be verified and our understanding of it must become sharper.Challenged by the climate change societies may compete about sustainable results, but competing to be sustainable has a twofold outcome. We may compete in order to reach high performance measurable solutions in one building and we may compete to spread good enough sustainable integrated solutions throughout the environment. The both seem to be necessary, the first attracting the traditional innovation paradigm, measured in quantities, while the second risks staying in the shadow of technological progress. We have to worry about this and develop new integrated theories.Emerging patterns of competitive cooperation are observed in evolving projects for sustainable buildings in a local Swedish reality, within a study (Demo-04) focused on giving guidelines for the implementation of sustainable building goals. A stakeholder participatory approach reinforces the need of a better understanding of the integrated sector-specific innovations as they all affect the design and construction processes. They are questioning the way people make decisions in everyday work and address a corporate integrated and shared responsibility. Innovations in building can be inconsistent with the concepts of sustainability when isolated from shared and clear sustainability goals. Still sustainable innovations emerge within a framework of coordinated design between stakeholders and new profiles of action in projects. Transparency is the common denominator of both cooperative and competitive behaviours and guarantees the possibility of resilience of the chosen social and technological paths.

Evaluation of a colour reference box as an aid for identification of colour appearance in rooms

- Hitherto, methods for visual assessment of colour appearance have not been developed for use in the study of rooms. We seek a practical method that allows one or two observers to characterize a room by identifying the perceived colours. Verbal descriptions are necessary, but lack precision. A magnitude estimation method may enable a more precise location in colour space. However, the need of a group of well-trained observers makes it impractical for room studies. A method involving matches between reference colour samples and the perceived room colours would be ideal. But, reference colour samples require a standard illumination; otherwise, the sample changes colour due to different room light. Hence, a method involving a colour reference box was developed. The colour reference box with its standard source of illumination provides a reference situation, where colour samples can be visually compared with the colours of the room. The study presented is an evaluation of this colour reference box. The crucial problem is that the same color sample in the box is perceived differently, as the observer adapts to various lighting conditions. The aim of the study was to investigate if these different perceptions of the samples could be described and controlled. In the study, 18 observers were asked to visually assess the hue of 15–66 samples, and mark its place in the NCS hue circle. The assessment of the samples was made in two different room lights: incandescent light and simulated daylight. The result of the study showed a clear tendency for the samples, perceived in the box, to shift colour in simulated daylight compared to incandescent light. It was concluded that the problem with the observer's adaptation to the room light can be described and controlled, although complementary studies are needed to quantify the adaptation effect with more accuracy, and to investigate differences in nuance. Thus, it seems that the colour reference box can be used to visually evaluate and describe the differences in colour appearance in different rooms. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
