- Herren in 1987, reported normal faults resulted in the telescoping of metamorphic isograds within a 200 meter zone between Sumche Topko to Mulung Topko in the Zanskar Shear Zone NW Himalaya. However petrographic study-of sections obtained from Mulung Topko and surrounding areas (pensila-padarn section) indicate that the rocks belong to the kyanite-sillimanite-starurolite grade only. Extension crenulation cleavage and other shear criteria show an initial NESW movement after which a layer parallel extension occurred and the shear zone developed. Minieralogical assemblage and mapping indicate that the isograds run paralleI to each other before they possibly truncate against the shear zone along the Pensila-Padam section. A probable model has been proposed to explain the features

- An algorithm is outlined for the implicit integration of isotropic plasticity models for an arbitrary choice of mixed stress and strain control variables. Drained as well as undrained behaviour is considered. The closest-point-projection method in conjunction with a completely strain-driven format is used in a core algorithm. In the drained case strain response variables are determined via iterations to satisfy equilibrium of prescribed and calculated stresses that correspond to the strain response variables. In the undrained case, on the other hand, strains and pore pressure are determined via simultaneous iterations to satisfy equilibrium and the incompressibility condition. The algorithm is applied to a new generalized cam-clay model, and various iteration techniques are assessed. In particular, Newton iterations which employ the matrix of algorithmic tangent stiffness moduli are shown to compete favourably with more conventional methods.

- The focus of this paper is on the development and validation of a numerical model of flow through simplified embankment dams with fractures. Two laboratory experiments were conducted to provide data for validation of the numerical model, one dealing with steady flow in a Hele-Shaw cell and one with steady flow through a bed of packed glass beads. A horizontal fracture, extending from the upstream boundary to a point within the embankment, was used in both experiments, and it was shown to have a significant influence on the discharge, pressure distribution, height of the seepage face, and free surface profile. Comparisons between numerically determined and experimentally measured results were carried out with respect to the discharge, pressure distribution, height of the seepage face, and free surface profile. In the experiments it is shown that a fracture increases the discharge and that the discharge increases more when a fracture is located far away from the free surface profile than when it is located close to the free surface profile. The height of the seepage face above the tailwater is strongly dependent upon the length of the fracture. The influence on the free surface profile is greater when a fracture is close to the free surface profile than when it is far away from the free surface profile. These effects are also found in the numerical simulations. It is thus concluded that the agreement is generally satisfactory between the experimental and numerical results

The paper focuses on basic verification studies, that is, comparisons with analytical solutions and data from laboratory experiments. Two experimental studies, one dealing with the flow in a Hele-Shaw cell and the other with the flow through a bed of packed glass beads, are also described. Comparisons are carried out with respect to the phreatic surfaces, pressure profiles, seepage levels and discharges. It is concluded that the agreement between experimental, analytical and numerical results is generally satisfactory.

- When performing centrifuge tests, it is necessary to carry out in-flight tests such as the cone penetration test (CPT). Recently, miniature CPTs have formed one collaboration entitled 'European Program of Improvement in Centrifuging' (EPIC). This article provides information on both the random and the consistent variations which have been observed with CPTs in sand when identical prototypes have been modeled in the different laboratories.
