  • A Problem-based Ubiquitous Learning Approach to Improving the Questioning Abilities of Elementary School Students
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Educational Technology & Society. - 1176-3647 .- 1436-4522. ; 17:4, s. 316-334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a ubiquitous problem-based learning system (UPBLS) on students' question-raising performance in field inquiry activities. An experiment was conducted on an elementary school natural science course. A total of 43 sixth and fifth grade elementary students divided into experienced and novice groups participated in the field observation activities with on-line discussion over a period of seven months to evaluate the changes in their questioning ability. Moreover, a rubric for evaluating the students' questioning ability was developed and validated. Supported by UPBLS, the students collected the required wetland ecology data in three wetland field observation activities. The experimental results show that the students' questioning abilities significantly improved during the learning process. Moreover, it was found that both the experienced and the novice students had similar progress trends, implying that the proposed approach is helpful for improving the questioning abilities of students with different levels of prior knowledge.

  • Mobile Inquiry Learning in Sweden : Development Insights on Interoperability, Extensibility and Sustainability of the LETS GO Software System
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Educational Technology & Society. - : International forum of Educational Technology. - 1176-3647 .- 1436-4522. ; 17:2, s. 43-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the overall lifecycle and evolution of a software system we have developed in relation to the Learning Ecology through Science with Global Outcomes (LETS GO) research project. One of the aims of the project is to support “open inquiry learning” using mobile science collaboratories that provide open software tools and resources, and participation frameworks for learner project collaboration, mobile data and media capture, publishing, analysis, and reflection. The primary focus of this paper is to report on our technical development, insights and knowledge gained during the past four years. Technical implementations and the prototypes developed in this project have been tested across several educational trials conduced in Sweden and abroad with more than 400 learners. Insights and knowledge gained from these activities verify that learners´ requirements were adequately addressed while satisfying their needs. The outcomes and results of our efforts provided us with a better understanding with regard to which software engineering processes and approaches can be used to address and support the complex requirements that emerge in novel mobile learning scenarios. Thus, the results discussed in this paper provide deeper insights into the importance of properly addressing issues related to interoperability and extensibility in order to develop software solutions to support mobile learning that are sustainable and endurable over time.

  • A Particle Consistent with the Higgs Boson Observed with the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 338:6114, s. 1576-1582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nearly 50 years ago, theoretical physicists proposed that a field permeates the universe and gives energy to the vacuum. This field was required to explain why some, but not all, fundamental particles have mass. Numerous precision measurements during recent decades have provided indirect support for the existence of this field, but one crucial prediction of this theory has remained unconfirmed despite 30 years of experimental searches: the existence of a massive particle, the standard model Higgs boson. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN has now observed the production of a new particle with a mass of 126 giga-electron volts and decay signatures consistent with those expected for the Higgs particle. This result is strong support for the standard model of particle physics, including the presence of this vacuum field. The existence and properties of the newly discovered particle may also have consequences beyond the standard model itself.

  • Application of Ambient Analysis Techniques for Electromechanical Mode Estimation from Measured PMU Data in the Nordic Power System
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • For over more than two decades, the application of advanced signal processing techniques to power system measurement data for the estimation of dynamic properties has been an important research subject. Recently, many techniques have been applied to transient (or ringdown) data, ambient data, and to probing data. Some of these methodologies are now being included in off-line analysis software, and are now being incorporated into software tools used in control rooms for monitoring the near real-time behavior of power system dynamics. In this study we illustrate the practical application of some ambient analysis methods for electromechanical mode estimation in Nordic power system. The discussions and results in this study are of value to power system operators and planners as they provide information of the applicability of these techniques via readily available signal processing tools, and in addition, it is shown how to critically analyze the results obtained with these methods. Comparison with eigenanalysis results allows engineers to realize the value of ambient analysis techniques as a supportive tool for the more common eigenanalysis methods.

  • Estimation of Eastern Denmark’s electromechanical modes from ambient phasor measurement data
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE POWER AND ENERGY SOCIETY GENERAL MEETING 2010. - : IEEE. - 9781424483570 ; , s. 1-8
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report on the preliminary results of a collaborative investigation effort between researchers in North America and Europe aiming to baseline the electromechanical modes and mode shapes of the Nordic system from synchronized phasor measurement data. We provide an overview on the Danish power grid and its interconnections, and describe the features of an experimental phasor measurement unit designed by DTU which is used to provide the measurements used in this investigation. Parametric and non-parametric block processing techniques are applied to 48 hours of ambient data recorded at the Radsted and Hoveg #x00E5;rd substations in Eastern Denmark. The estimated modes are in agreement with those shown in eigenanalysis studies, and other measurement-based investigations. More importantly, the emergence of a new 0.8 Hz mode in Sj #x00E6;lland is reported.
