  • Folkbildning i (av)koloniseringens skugga : Demokrati, nationella mytologier och solidaritetens paradoxer
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Utbildning och Demokrati. - 1102-6472 .- 2001-7316. ; 18:3, s. 29-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden and among Swedish popular movements, there has long been a great willingness to share experiences from establishing the “Swedish model” of welfare and democracy with countries in other parts of the world. In this sharing of experience, popular adult education has played an important role. Over the years, there have also been several attempts to spread the “Swedish model” of education of this kind, i.e. study circles and folk high schools. Here, we analyse a large-scale project to establish Folk Development Colleges (FDCs) in Tanzania in the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on the ways in which Swedish popular adult educators have described the project. In theoretical terms, the article is based on a postcolonial framework, highlighting the continuing importance of the legacies of colonialism in today’s society. One of the main conclusions drawn is that, in the process of “exporting” the idea of popular adult education around the world, there is an ongoing formation of national self-images in contrast to images of “the Other”, involving a constant risk of reproducing ideas from a colonial past.

  • Study Circles in Sweden
  • 2009. - 1
  • Ingår i: National Institute of Lifelong  Education. - Seoul, South Korea : National Institute of Lifelong Education. ; , s. 62-79
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This text aims at giving an overview of the study circles as a tradition and the state of the art at present time. The point of departure is primarily the Swedish context, even though there are some comments about study circles elsewhere. At first there is discussion about definition, pointing out the lack of an exact notion, but also suggesting an approximate answer – a study circle grammar. In order to give some deeper understanding of the realities, there are also some very concrete examples, considering content and process. The idea is to communicate a more down to earth meaning. The same thought is applied in the presentation of outcomes: statistics, but also the experiences and understandings, which are reported by participants. The administrative and economic support system is important for the operation of the study circles and therefore described in a rather elaborate way. After an international outlook on study circles there is finally a short bibliography, indicating where to look further in order to know more.

  • Making Sense of the Social Forum : On the Local Framing of a Fashionable Global Symbol
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of contemporary ethnography. - Thousand Oaks : Sage Publications. - 0891-2416 .- 1552-5414. ; 38:4, s. 435-464
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The worldwide emergence of Social Forums (SF), originating from Porto Alegre (Brazil) in 2001, is a key element in the movement for global justice. A growing body of literature on the forums concerns its function as a transnational venue for civil society and a global symbol for resistance against neoliberalism. However, little empirical research is carried out on the local meanings of the widespread SFs. This article reports on a case study on the organizational process of a local forum in a Swedish town. The analysis focuses on intracoalitional interaction among activists from the labor movement, Attac, and a local cultural institution. The importance of considering local framing processes and the often-neglected influence of fashion when studying the emergence of SFs is emphasized. Findings show how the dichotomy the Old versus the New became crucial in the framing process. Framed as a novelty contrasted with "old" socialist values, the SF was rejected by the labor movement activists as just another expression of a contemporary neoliberal trend of depoliticization. Implications for the study of the social forum phenomenon are discussed.
