- In Sweden and among Swedish popular movements, there has long been a great willingness to share experiences from establishing the “Swedish model” of welfare and democracy with countries in other parts of the world. In this sharing of experience, popular adult education has played an important role. Over the years, there have also been several attempts to spread the “Swedish model” of education of this kind, i.e. study circles and folk high schools. Here, we analyse a large-scale project to establish Folk Development Colleges (FDCs) in Tanzania in the 1970s and 1980s, focusing on the ways in which Swedish popular adult educators have described the project. In theoretical terms, the article is based on a postcolonial framework, highlighting the continuing importance of the legacies of colonialism in today’s society. One of the main conclusions drawn is that, in the process of “exporting” the idea of popular adult education around the world, there is an ongoing formation of national self-images in contrast to images of “the Other”, involving a constant risk of reproducing ideas from a colonial past.

- This text aims at giving an overview of the study circles as a tradition and the state of the art at present time. The point of departure is primarily the Swedish context, even though there are some comments about study circles elsewhere. At first there is discussion about definition, pointing out the lack of an exact notion, but also suggesting an approximate answer – a study circle grammar. In order to give some deeper understanding of the realities, there are also some very concrete examples, considering content and process. The idea is to communicate a more down to earth meaning. The same thought is applied in the presentation of outcomes: statistics, but also the experiences and understandings, which are reported by participants. The administrative and economic support system is important for the operation of the study circles and therefore described in a rather elaborate way. After an international outlook on study circles there is finally a short bibliography, indicating where to look further in order to know more.

- När författarna till denna antologi inbjöds att medverka formulerades temat Folkbildning – samtidig eller tidlös? Någon ytterligare vägledning eller styrning gavs inte. Artiklarna är således författarnas fria tolkning av temat. Detta resulterade i en rikhaltig blandning av perspektiv och empirisk förankring i olika folkbildningssammanhang i skilda tider. Som redaktörer har vi sökt en röd tråd som löper genom artiklarna. Vi har funnit att de sammantaget handlar om folkbildningens innebörder insatta i olika tidsmässiga sammanhang. Antologins undertitel blev därför Om innebörder över tid. Ett par författare har tagit utgångspunkt i historien, andra i samtida folkbildning och ett par författare tar utgångspunkt i framtiden. Flera författare analyserar folkbildningens relevans under en längre tidsperiod. Olika begrepp eller talet om folkbildning står i centrum i flera artiklar.Det är således spännande att konstatera att antologin som helhet ger en aspektrik bild av folkbildning som ett barn av sin samtid. Parallellt ges olika tolkningar av tidlösa kännetecken som författarna spårar trots genomgripande förändringar både inom och utanför folkbildningen. En övergripande slutsats är således att temats ”eller” får formuleras om till ett ”och” – folkbildning kan förstås både som ett samtida och som ett tidlöst fenomen. Men sambanden mellan det tidsbundna och det tidlösa är både komplexa och varierande beroende på sammanhang och valet av utsiktspunkt.Vi har valt att i huvudsak följa tidsaxeln i antologins disposition och har därför delat in de sexton artiklarna under följande fem avdelningar:Folkbildningens innebörder i backspegelnPerspektiv på folkbildning i samtidenFramtiden som utmaningFolkbildningens relevans över tidFolkbildning som idé och begreppDet betyder inte att varje artikel entydigt kan placeras i en viss avdelning. Vår ambition är dock att strukturen ska hjälpa läsaren att fåöverblick över antologins mångfacetterade innehåll. Varje författare ansvarar själv för innehållet i sin artikel. Vår förhoppning är att antologin skall inspirera till fortsatt forskning, finna vägen in i undervisning och olika lärtillfällen inom universitet och folkbildning och sist men inte minst stimulera debatten om folkbildningens innebörder.

- World Social Forum, and the worldwide appearance of regional, national and local Social Forums (SF), is an important part of the movement for global justice. The aim of this thesis is to explore how the SF as a global phenomenon is interpreted and staged locally in Sweden. Central questions are: What local meanings are given to the SF phenomenon when it is introduced and organized in a local context? What relations are created between the various actors in this organizational process in terms of coalitions and power relations? How do the SFs relate to the Swedish institutionalized popular adult education? These questions are explored in the four articles on which this thesis rests. Ethnographic field studies of local organizational processes constitute the empirical basis of theoretically informed hermeneutic interpretations. A neo-gramscian perspective is used to analyze the SF as a potentially counter-hegemonic popular education phenomenon. This perspective has been complemented by mainly two theoretical concepts, that is, framing and symbolic capital. Results demonstrate how the emergence of SFs in Sweden is characterized by a widespread desire among various activists and organizations to build coalitions. In the establishment of SFs the institutionalized popular adult education play both the role of a source of economic and material resources and of being a link between various organizations. However, in the wide and formally open organizational process, specific distinctions and hierarchies arise that might neutralize the SF’s ideological impact and its potential for counter-hegemonic coalition construction. Finally, a Swedish academic debate on the concept of “folkbildning” (popular adult education) is addressed. It is argued that there is a need to widen the scope of this debate to more frequently focus on global (popular) educational phenomena (such as the social forums) in research on “folkbildning”, and not only pay attention to “typical” national or Nordic institutions and traditions.
