    • This thesis intends to familiarise the reader with quantum error correction, and also show some relations to the well known concept of information - and the lesser known quantum information. Quantum information describes how information can be carried by quantum states, and how interaction with other systems give rise to a full set of quantum phenomena, many of which have no correspondence in classical information theory. These phenomena include decoherence, as a consequence of entanglement. Decoherence can also be understood as "information leakage", i.e., knowledge of an event is transferred to the reservoir - an effect that in general destroys superpositions of pure states.It is possible to protect quantum states (e.g., qubits) from interaction with the environment - but not by amplification or duplication, due to the "no-cloning" theorem. Instead, this is done using coding, non-demolition measurements, and recovery operations. In a typical scenario, however, not all types of destructive events are likely to occur, but only those allowed by the information carrier, the type of interaction with the environment, and how the environment "picks up" information of the error events. These characteristics can be incorporated into a code, i.e., a channel-adapted quantum error-correcting code. Often, it is assumed that the environment's ability to distinguish between error events is small, and I will denote such environments "memory-less". This assumption is not always valid, since the ability to distinguish error events is related to the \emph{temperature} of the environment, and in the particular case of information coded onto photons,  typically holds, and one must then assume that the environment has a "memory". In this thesis, I describe a short quantum error-correcting code (QECC), adapted for photons interacting with a cold environment, i.e., this code protects from an environment that continuously records which error occurred in the coded quantum state.Also, it is of interest to compare the performance of different QECCs - But which yardstick should one use? We compare two such figures of merit, namely the quantum mutual information and the quantum fidelity, and show that they can not, in general, be simultaneously maximised in an error correcting procedure. To show this, we have used a five-qubit perfect code, but assumed a channel that only cause bit-flip errors. It appears that quantum mutual information is the better suited yardstick of the two, however more tedious to calculate than quantum fidelity - which is more commonly used.

  • Simulations of thermoelectric transport in granularsuperconductors

    • This thesis presents results from numerical simulations of the Nernst effect dueto phase fluctuations in models of two-dimensional granular superconductors. Inaddition other transport properties, such as thermal conductivity and electrical re-sistivity are calculated. The models are based on a phase only description withLangevin or resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction (RCSJ) dy-namics, generalized to be valid for any type of two-dimensional lattice structure.All transport coefficients are evaluated from equilibrium correlation functions usingKubo formulas. In Paper I, anomalous sign reversals of the Nernst signal eN , corresponding tovortex motion from colder to hotter regions, are observed. These are attributedto geometric frustration effects close to magnetic fields commensurate with theunderlying lattice structure. The effect is seen also in systems with moderategeometric disorder, and should thus be possible to observe in real two-dimensionalgranular superconductors or Josephson junction arrays. Paper II presents two different derivations of an expression for the heat current inLangevin and RCSJ dynamics. The resulting expression is through our simulationsseen to obey the required Onsager relation, as well as giving consistent resultswhen calculating κ and eN via Kubo formulas and through the responses to anapplied temperature gradient. In zero magnetic field and at low-temperatures, thecontribution to the thermal conductivity κ in RCSJ dynamics is calculated usinga spin-wave approximation, and is shown to be independent of temperature anddiverge logarithmically with system size. At higher temperatures, κ shows a non-monotonic temperature dependence. In zero magnetic field κ has a anomalouslogarithmic size dependence also in this regime. The off-diagonal component ofthe thermoelectric tensor αxy is calculated and displays the very same ∼1/T dependence at low temperatures predicted from calculations based on Gaussiansuperconducting fluctuations.

  • Spin-diode effect and thermally controlled switching in magnetic spin-valves

    • This thesis demonstrates two new device concepts that are based on the tunneling and giant magnetoresistance effects. The first is a semiconductor-free asymmetric magnetic double tunnel junction that is shown to work as a diode, while at the same time exhibiting a record high magnetoresistance. It is experimentally verified that a diode effect, with a rectification ratio of at least 100, can be obtained in this type of system, and that a negative magnetoresistance of nearly 4000% can be measured at low temperature. The large magnetoresistance is attributed to spin resonant tunneling, where the parallel and antiparallel orientation of the magnetic moments shifts the energy levels in the middle electrode, thereby changing their alignment with the conduction band in the outer electrodes. This resonant tunneling can be useful when scaling down magnetic random access memory; eliminating the need to use external diodes or transistors in series with each bit. The second device concept is a thermally controlled spin-switch; a novel way to control the free-layer switching and magnetoresistance in spin-valves. By exchange coupling two ferromagnetic films through a weakly ferromagnetic Ni-Cu alloy, the coupling is controlled by changes in temperature. At room temperature, the alloy is weakly ferromagnetic and the two films are exchange coupled through the alloy. At a temperature higher than the Curie point, the alloy is paramagnetic and the two strongly ferromagnetic films decouple. Using this technique, the read out signal from a giant magnetoresistance element is controlled using both external heating and internal Joule heating. No degradation of device performance upon thermal cycling is observed. The change in temperature for a full free-layer reversal is shown to be 35 degrees Celsius for the present Ni-Cu alloy. It is predicted that this type of switching theoretically can lead to high frequency oscillations in current, voltage, and temperature, where the frequency is controlled by an external inductor or capacitor. This can prove to be useful for applications such as voltage controlled oscillators in, for example, frequency synthesizers and function generators. Several ways to optimize the thermally controlled spin switch are discussed and conceptually demonstrated with experiments.

  • Experimental and theoretical study of post-dryout heat transfer in annuli with flow obstacle

    • An experimental study on post dryout heat transfer regime in annuli with flow obstacles wasconducted in the High-pressure Water Test (HWAT) loop at the Royal Institute of Technologyin Stockholm, Sweden. An annulus with flow obstacles, consisting of two concentric heatedpipes (12.7x24.3) mm, with total heated length equal to 3650 mm was employed as a testsection. The experimental investigations were performed in a wide range of the operationalconditions: mass flux (500-1750) kg/(m2s), inlet subcooling (10-40) K and system pressure(5-7) MPa. The wall superheat was measured at 88 different axial positions. A significanteffect of the flow obstacles on the wall temperature has been observed. A new correlation toevaluate the wall superheat in the post-dryout developing region and downstream of the flowobstacles was suggested. The new approach is taking into account in a combined manner theonset of the dryout point and the flow obstacle location. The coefficients and constants of thecorrelation have been optimized based on 1211 points obtained experimentally. Thecorrelation is applicable starting with the point of the onset of the dryout towards fullydeveloped post-dryout heat transfer regime and shows a correct asymptotical trend. Toaccount for the flow obstacle effect on the critical quality, an expression similar to theLevitan-Lanstman dryout correlation is suggested. The newly developed methodology can beused to predict the wall temperature in the post-dryout heat transfer regime over a wide rangeof mass fluxes and pressures typical for boiling water reactors.

  • On measurement and monitoring of reactivity in subcritical reactor systems

    • Accelerator-driven systems have been proposed for incineration of transuranic elements from spent nuclear fuel. For safe operation of such facilities, a robust method for reactivity monitoring is required. Experience has shown that the performance of reactivity measurement methods in terms of accuracy and applicability is highly system dependent. Further investigations are needed to increase the knowledge data bank before applying the methods to an industrial facility and to achieve license to operate such a facility. In this thesis, two systems have been subject to investigation of various reactivity measurement methods. Conditions for successful utilization of the methods are presented, based on the experimental experience. In contrast to previous studies in this field, the reactivity has not only been determined, but also monitored based on the so called beam trip methodology which is applicable also to non-zero power systems. The results of this work constitute a part of the knowledge base for the definition of a validated online reactivity monitoring methodology for facilities currently being under development in Europe (XT-ADS and EFIT).

  • Models in Neutrino Physics : Numerical and Statistical Studies

    • The standard model of particle physics can excellently describe the vast majorityof data of particle physics experiments. However, in its simplest form, it cannot account for the fact that the neutrinos are massive particles and lepton flavorsmixed, as required by the observation of neutrino oscillations. Hence, the standardmodel must be extended in order to account for these observations, opening up thepossibility to explore new and interesting physical phenomena.There are numerous models proposed to accommodate massive neutrinos. Thesimplest of these are able to describe the observations using only a small numberof effective parameters. Furthermore, neutrinos are the only known existing particleswhich have the potential of being their own antiparticles, a possibility that isactively being investigated through experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay.In this thesis, we analyse these simple models using Bayesian inference and constraintsfrom neutrino-related experiments, and we also investigate the potential offuture experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay to probe other kinds of newphysics.In addition, more elaborate theoretical models of neutrino masses have beenproposed, with the seesaw models being a particularly popular group of models inwhich new heavy particles generate neutrino masses. We study low-scale seesawmodels, in particular the resulting energy-scale dependence of the neutrino parameters,which incorporate new particles with masses within the reach of current andfuture experiments, such as the LHC.

  • Predictions of Effective Models in Neutrino Physics

    • Experiments on neutrino oscillations have confirmed that neutrinos have small, but non-zero masses, and that the interacting neutrino states do not have definite masses, but are mixtures of such states.The seesaw models make up a group of popular models describing the small neutrino masses and the corresponding mixing.In these models, new, heavy fields are introduced and the neutrino masses are suppressed by the ratio between the electroweak scale and the large masses of the new fields. Usually, the new fields introduced have masses far above the electroweak scale, outside the reach of any foreseeable experiments, making these versions of seesaw models essentially untestable. However, there are also so-called low-scale seesaw models, where the new particles have masses above the electroweak scale, but within the reach of future experiments, such as the LHC.In quantum field theories, quantum corrections generally introduce an energy-scale dependence on all their parameters, described by the renormalization group equations. In this thesis, the energy-scale dependence of the neutrino parameters in two low-scale seesaw models, the low-scale type I and inverse seesaw models, are considered. Also, the question of whether the neutrinos are Majorana particles, \ie , their own antiparticles, has not been decided experimentally. Future experiments on neutrinoless double beta decay could confirm the Majorana nature of neutrinos. However, there could also be additional contributions to the decay, which are not directly related to neutrino masses. We have investigated the possible future bounds on the strength of such additional contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay, depending on the outcome of ongoing and planned experiments related to neutrino masses.

  • Laboratory soft x-ray microscopy and tomography

    • Soft x-ray microscopy in the water-window (λ = 2.28 nm – 4.36 nm) is based on zone-plate optics and allows high-resolution imaging of, e.g., cells and soils in their natural or near-natural environment. Three-dimensional imaging is provided via tomographic techniques, soft x-ray cryo tomography. However, soft x-ray microscopes with such capabilities have been based on large-scale synchrotron x‑ray facilities, thereby limiting their accessibility for a wider scientific community. This Thesis describes the development of the Stockholm laboratory soft x-ray microscope to three-dimensional cryo tomography and to new optics-based contrast mechanisms. The microscope relies on a methanol or nitrogen liquid-jet laser-plasma source, normal-incidence multilayer or zone-plate condenser optics, in-house fabricated zone-plate objectives, and allows operation at two wavelengths in the water-window, λ = 2.48 nm and λ = 2.48 nm. With the implementation of a new state-of-the-art normal-incidence multilayer condenser for operation at λ = 2.48 nm and a tiltable cryogenic sample stage the microscope now allows imaging of dry, wet or cryo-fixed samples. This arrangement was used for the first demonstration of laboratory soft x-ray cryo microscopy and tomography. The performance of the microscope has been demonstrated in a number of experiments described in this Thesis, including, tomographic imaging with a resolution of 140 nm, cryo microscopy and tomography of various cells and parasites, and for studies of aqueous soils and clays. The Thesis also describes the development and implementation of single-element differential-interference and Zernike phase-contrast zone-plate objectives. The enhanced contrast provided by these optics reduce exposure times or lowers the dose in samples and are of major importance for harder x-ray microscopy. The implementation of a high-resolution 50 nm compound zone-plate objective for sub-25-nm resolution imaging is also described. All experiments are supported by extensive numerical modelling for improved understanding of partially coherent image formation and stray light in soft x-ray microscopes. The models are useful tools for studying effects of zone plate optics or optical design of the microscope on image formation and quantitative accuracy in soft x-ray tomography.

  • Multicomponent superconductivity : Vortex matter and phase transitions

    • The topic of this thesis is vortex-physics in multi component Ginzburg- Landau models. These models describe a newly discovered class of super- conductors with multiple superconducting gaps, and possess many properties that set them apart from single component models. The work presented here relies on large scale computer simulations using various numerical techniques, but also on some analytical methods.In Paper I, Type-1.5 Superconducting State from an Intrinsic Proximity Effect in Two-Band Superconductors, we show that in multiband supercon- ductors, even an extremely small interband proximity effect can lead to a qualitative change in the interaction potential between superconducting vor- tices, by producing long-range intervortex attraction. This type of vortex interaction results in an unusual response to low magnetic fields, leading to phase separation into domains of two-component Meissner states and vortex droplets.In paper II, Type-1.5 superconductivity in two-band systems, we discuss the influence of Josephson coupling and show that non-monotonic intervortex interaction can also arise in two-band superconductors where one of the bands is proximity induced by Josephson interband coupling.In paper III, Type-1.5 superconductivity in multiband systems: Effects of interband couplings, we investigate the appearance of Type-1.5 superconduc- tivity in the case with two active bands and substantial inter-band couplings such as intrinsic Josephson coupling, mixed gradient coupling, and density- density interactions. We show that in the presence of these interactions, the system supports type-1.5 superconductivity with fundamental length scales being associated with the mass of the gauge field and two masses of normal modes represented by linear combinations of the density fields.In paper IV, Semi-Meissner state and nonpairwise intervortex interactions in type-1.5 superconductors, we demonstrate the existence of nonpairwise in- tervortex forces in multicomponent and layered superconducting systems. We also consider the properties of vortex clusters in a semi-Meissner state of type- 1.5 two-component superconductors. We show that under certain conditions nonpairwise forces can contribute to the formation of complex vortex states in type-1.5 regimes.In paper V, Length scales, collective modes, and type-1.5 regimes in three- band superconductors, we consider systems where frustration in phase dif- ferences occur due to competing Josephson inter-band coupling terms. We show that gradients of densities and phase differences can be inextricably intertwined in vortex excitations in three-band models. This can lead to long-range attractive intervortex interactions and the appearance of type-1.5 regimes even when the intercomponent Josephson coupling is large. We also show that field-induced vortices can lead to a change of broken symmetry from U (1) to U (1) ⇥ Z2 in the system. In the type-1.5 regime, it results in a semi-Meissner state where the system has a macroscopic phase separation in domainswithbrokenU(1)andU(1)⇥Z2 symmetries.In paper VI, Topological Solitons in Three-Band Superconductors with Broken Time Reversal Symmetry, we show that three-band superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry allow magnetic flux-carrying stable topo- logical solitons. They can be induced by fluctuations or quenching the system through a phase transition. It can provide an experimental signature of the time reversal symmetry breakdown.In paper VII, Type-1.5 superconductivity in multiband systems: Magnetic response, broken symmetries and microscopic theory – A brief overview, we give an overview of vortex physics and magnetic response in multi component Ginzburg-Landau theory. We also examine Type-1.5 superconductivity in the context of microscopic theory.In paper VIII, Chiral CP2 skyrmions in three-band superconductors, we show that under certain conditions, three-component superconductors (and, in particular, three-band systems) allow stable topological defects different from vortices. We demonstrate the existence of these excitations, charac- terised by a CP2 topological invariant, in models for three-component super- conductors with broken time-reversal symmetry. We term these topological defects “chiral GL(3) skyrmions,” where “chiral” refers to the fact that due to broken time-reversal symmetry, these defects come in inequivalent left- and right-handed versions. In certain cases, these objects are energetically cheaper than vortices and should be induced by an applied magnetic field. In other situations, these skyrmions are metastable states, which can be produced by a quench. Observation of these defects can signal broken time-reversal sym- metry in three-band superconductors or in Josephson-coupled bilayers of s± and s-wave superconductors.In paper IX, Phase transition in multi-component superconductors, we ex- amine the thermodynamics of frustrated multi-components superconductors and show that their highly complex energy landscape can give rise new types of phase transitions not present in single component superconductors.
