  • Hyperworks : On Digital Literature and Computer Games
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study investigates the effects of digitization on literature and literary culture with focus on works of literary fiction and other kinds of works inspired by such works. The concept of “hyperworks” refers to works intended to be navigated multisequentially, i.e. the users create their own paths through the work by making choices. The three articles that make up the dissertation include analyses of individual works as well as discussions of theoretical models and concepts. The study combines perspectives from several theoretical traditions: narratology, hypertext theory, ludology (i.e., game studies), sociology of literature, textual criticism, media theory, and new media studies. The first article examines narrative technique and aspects of ergodicity in the digital hyperwork afternoon, a story (1997) by Michael Joyce. The main focus is on an analysis of the work’s structural organization and narrative technique. The second article proposes a theoretical framework for the analysis of texts and works in different media, especially focusing on the media structure (i.e. linking, navigation, storage, presentation, etc.)The third article analyzes and describes the ludolization, i.e., transposition into game form, of J. K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997). The study is a comparative analysis of the PC version of the computer game Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) and the original novel, and discusses the media structure and the narrative/ludic structure of the two works. The concepts of ergodicity, cybertext, and content space are especially central to the study. Among the new concepts introduced are omnidiscourse, omnistory, performed discourse, performed story, lateral structure, hyperliterary competence, core ludic sequence, and performed ludic sequence. Also, a method for the analysis and description of links, i.e. a linkology, is presented along with new terms such as linkarium, ancoral text, adlink, and exlink.

  • Två världar - ett universitet : Svenska skönlitterära universitetsskildringar 1904-1943 : en genusstudie
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is a gender study of Swedish-university fiction, novels and short stories, published in bookform by female and male authors between 1904 and 1943. Authors such as Ellen Landquist, Paul Rosen-ius,Axel Wändahl, Ragnar Josephson, Lydia Wahlström, Gustaf Hellström, Artur Möller, Margit Palmær,Ingeborg Björklund and Fritiof Nilsson Piraten examine the difficult relationship between young under-graduatesor graduates and the university. The main purpose of the thesis is to find both similarities anddifferences between women and men writers' way of depicting the university. Methodologically, thisstudy can be seen as reading the novels as a kind of a 'dialogue', or a discourse, where the authors andnarrative voices complete, confirm or contradict each other. The novels are analyzed by using both ShirleyArdener's theory of gender models and power and Jürgen Habermas' categories of 'public' and 'private'. Most of the authors deliver critical descriptions of the university and of the student's disappointmentwith it. The protagonists often search for values and goals others than those proposed by the academy. The most significant difference between the women and the men authors consists in the way of treatingthe private sphere of the university. Women authors often make attempts at discussing the idea of the'new woman', of sexuality and gender. Men authors are particularly concerned about depicting a malestudent's relationship to the official sphere of the university. The stories usually follow an uncomplicated narrative pattern, where the protagonist's disillusionmentwith the university gradually increases and often ends with a break with the existing system of educationand its values.

  • Romantik och förnuft : V.F. Palmblads förlag 1810-1830
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The subject of this thesis is V.F. Palmblad's publishing house during the years of 1810-1830 and particularlyits role in the breakthrough of literary romanticism. Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of "field" and "habitus" areused in the dissertation. The Palmblad academic printing house in Uppsala and its printed production every fifth year from 1810to 1830 is analysed, as is the printed production from the publishing house each of those years. The emer-genceof Palmblad & C. is investigated and the concept of "network" is introduced. The sale of publications from Palmblad & C. and its economic strategy is investigated. There is also ananalysis of how the group of romanticists termed "fosforists" could accumulate social capital by means of thepublishing house. Bourdieu's concept of habitus is used to indicate the authors' view of themselves and external apparitions.Palmblad acted as a creator and promotor of a certain image of his authors. Some discussion is devoted tofemale romantic authors: what their positions were, how male colleagues viewed them and female influen-ces.There is a presentation of how and why publications were chosen. A large part of the thesis is devoted toanalyses of Palmblad & C. - especially Palmblad and the poet Atterbom - as co-productive in terms of otherromantic authors' texts and reviews (for instance Lorenzo Hammarsköld, Euphrosyne and Samuel Hed-born).Palmblad's influence on Atterbom is also touched upon. A part of the dissertation deals with the distribution of publications from Palmblad & C., includingdiscussions of conditions for transportation, Palmblad's bookshop, commission agents, contacts withforeign booksellers and publishers and marketing. Finally, the readers and audiences of publications from Palmblad & C. are dealt with. There is an attemptto define the target groups of Palmblad & C. Subscription lists from some of the publications from Palm-blad& C. are analysed. The main result is that Palmblad & C. functioned as a nursery for not yet established romantic poets. The"fosforists'" had fought against the view of literature of the previous generation (the "Old school"). The victo-riousoutcome of the romanticists depended on Palmblad & C. as the "fosforists" to a large extent were pub-lishedby this publishing house - which was dependent on the bookmarket at the time. The network offriends, colleagues and sympathisers tied to the publishing house compensated for the poor infrastructurewithin the bookmarket. This network also influenced decisions of what to publish or not. The habitus of the"fosforists" developed in the manner it did thanks to Palmblad & C., which guaranteed their existence as(published) authors. The battle was fought on the boundaries between the literary field and the academicfield. It is also emphasised that literary salons and the romantic poems that were sung were important to thespread of romantic literature published by Palmblad & C.

  • Vittra fruntimmer : Författarroll och retorik hos frihetstidens kvinnliga författare
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation deals with Swedish women writers during the so called Age of Liberty (1720–1772). A total of 141 female authors of printed texts are presented, the majority unmentioned in earlier research. The study is focused on two forms of literature: occasional poetry (poems that were written forspecial occasions such as weddings and funerals) and political texts (general political texts as well as texts discussing women’s issues). A number of authors are discussed more thoroughly, for example the occasional poets Charlotta Frölich, Hedvig Paqvalin and Charlotta Löfgren, and a group of political authors, such as Sweden’s first female journalist, Anna Margareta von Bragner and two female members of the Gyllenborg family, that was part of the Swedish elite. Two chapters are devoted to Hedvig Charlotta Nordenflycht, one of Sweden’s most successful authors during the Age of Liberty. The dissertation is based on gender theory. A double approach is used: a sociological perspective is combined with rhetorical analysis. The sociological perspective reveals that women writers often played an active role in the public sphere, but they also met with great difficulties. Apart from legal and political restrictions, women were denied higher education. One important factor which favoured women writers’ activities was the old ideal of the noble woman, still present in Sweden in the Age of Liberty, whereby women from the upper classes should be active in a variety of ways, including participating in representative contexts. The social position of the writers is of utmost importance to explain why women writers could act the way they did. One major result in the investigation is that female political authors as well as occasional poets acted on behalf of their households and networks. The term “social obligation” is introduced for literature that was written mainly out of social purpose. Using a distinction between power and authority one also can point out that although women writers had no formal or legal authority during this period, they could gain social authority and they did have power. The rhetorical analyses of texts show that women writers were skilled in the art of rhetoric and also reveals that there are no significant differences between texts written by female authors if one compare with texts written by male authors. One explanation to this is the paradoxical nature of classical rhetoric: it had its roots in public life, to which women were denied access, nevertheless it was possible to learn rhetorical methods and techniques without higher education, for example by imitation.Few women writers challenge existing gender-ideals in their texts. But on the other hand, only a handful of the texts written by female authors show signs of humility, and in these rare examples it is brought on by genre or social inferiority. Women writers did not apologize for their literary activity. And just by going public, they crossed the narrow boundaries that (on a symbolic and normative level)were commonly set for women.
