Att ta plats och göra skillnad : skolbibliotekariepraktiker i framgångsrika verksamheter

- Avhandlingen är en sammanläggningsavhandling bestående av fyra artiklar på engelska och en kappa på svenska. För avhandlingsstudien intervjuades 22 skolbibliotekarier som arbetade på framgångsrika skolbibliotek i svenska högstadie- och gymnasieskolor. Syftet med studien är att bidra till fördjupade kunskaper om skolbibliotekariers arbete för att skapa framgångsrika skolbiblioteksverksamheter och hur det kan förstås med hjälp av begreppet skolbibliotekariepraktiker. I delstudierna utforskas det jag benämner som studiens empiriska aspekter, det vill säga: skolbibliotekariers identitet och synlighet, skolbibliotekarien som pedagogisk resurs och arbetet med normkritiska perspektiv. Fyra olika praktikteoretiska ansatser utgör de teoretiska utgångspunkterna för studien. Dessa ansatser kommer ur teorierna om performativitet (Butler 1997; 2006; 2011), infrastruktur (Star & Ruhleder 1996) och infrastruktur för lärande (Guribye 2005; Guribye & Lindström 2009) samt teorin om praktikarkitekturer (Kemmis et al. 2014). Avhandlingens titel Att ta plats och göra skillnad har kopplingar till studiens fem forskningsfrågor. Det rör sig för det första om skapandet av en performativ professionell identitet som skolbibliotekarie genom vilket en bibliotekarie framträder som syns, hörs, förändrar och gör skillnad. För det andra diskuteras sätt att ta plats kopplade till bibliotekets och bibliotekariens synlighet i skolan vilken skapas genom synliggörande och förespråkande. Bibliotekariernas allt större roll och närvaro i klassrum, undervisning och annan pedagogisk verksamhet blir ett tredje sätt att ta plats, där bibliotekarien fungerar som ett stöd för hela skolan genom undervisning, projektledning och skolutveckling. För det fjärde tar skolbibliotekarierna plats som drivande av skolans demokratiarbete. För det femte kan dessa sätt att skapa, driva fram och utveckla skolbiblioteksverksamhet begreppsliggöras som skolbibliotekariepraktiker. Genom analyserna framträder hur identitets- och relationsskapande, synliggörande och platstagande utgör viktiga delar i dessa praktiker.

Academic librarianship in flux : The dynamics of negotiating professional jurisdiction

- This study aims to better understand the dynamics of negotiating professional jurisdiction within research from the perspective of academic librarians who develop library services for researchers. This qualitative case study consists of 24 semi-structured interviews, 32 recorded non-participant observations, and seven official university library documents collected at one Swedish university library with three division libraries during 2016.The analytical frame is based on Abbott’s (1988) system of professions approach and focuses on changes in professional work. It is assumed that all professions have strong or weak control of jurisdictions, which are described as a profession’s exclusive rights to a task area, including the right to define tasks and relevant professional knowledge. The assumption is that jurisdictions change and are under constant negotiation at the workplace until settled. The settlements range from strong to weak control of jurisdiction. The analytical frame also identifies disturbances in negotiating jurisdiction that can be internal or external to a profession, e.g., new knowledge, organization, and technology.The results show that developing library services for researchers is an ambiguous and complicated task. It is influenced by several constraints and addressed differently by academic librarians. Constraints are related to the task description, organization, management support, communication, academic librarians’ skills and competencies, as well as level of ambition. The results showed that academic librarians can claim jurisdiction within research, although disciplinary differences emerged. Academic librarians at a science and medical library seemed to have more apparent opportunities than academic librarians in humanities and art history or social science libraries to claim jurisdiction within research. The study confirms that access jurisdiction is an acknowledged jurisdiction for academic librarians and is strengthened by new and emerging tasks related to access, e.g., digitization. Access jurisdiction seems to act as a springboard to claim and negotiate jurisdiction within research. The study reveals active push and passive pull dynamics related to negotiating jurisdictions and highlighted communication and information dissemination as an organizational disturbance not previously considered in Abbott's (1988) system of professions approach. In addition, the thesis clarified a need to analyze the work and needs of the profession itself.

Barnbiblioteket tar form : En idéanalytisk studie av perioden 1945–2018

- Avhandlingens syfte är att skapa kunskap om vilka idéer som har format barnbiblioteket i Sverige under efterkrigstiden, samt hur idéerna har varierat över tid, i spänning och samspel mellan politik och profession.Forskningsfrågorna är: Vilka idéer om barnbiblioteket kommer till uttryck i riksdagstryck, utredningsbetänkanden publicerade som SOU samt bibliotekpress, och hur förhåller sig idéerna till varandra?Hur har idéerna som tagit sig uttryck i nämnda empiriska material varierat över tid?Hur ska idéerna, relationerna dem emellan samt deras variation över tid förstås? Studien görs ur ett historiskt institutionellt perspektiv, med fokus på hur institutioner förändras över tid. Idéer, institutionella logiker och idealtyper är centrala teoretiska begrepp, jämte institutionell omvandling genom omtolkning samt tidsanda. Metoden är idéanalytisk och genomförs med hjälp av idealtyper som verktyg. Materialet utgörs av riksdagstryck, betänkanden utgivna som statens offentliga utredningar (SOU) samt bibliotekspress, som samlats in i anslutning till ett urval händelser och skeenden av relevans för barnbiblioteket under perioden 1945–2018. Analysen visar att olika idéer konkurrerar om dominans vid barnbiblioteket. Över tid har variationen av idéer inom barnbiblioteket blivit allt större. Utifrån analysen av avhandlingens material dras slutsatsen att barnbiblioteket är ett resultat av att mål och medel för verksamheten har definierats om över tid, det vill säga att en institutionell omvandling genom omtolkning har ägt rum. Vidare konstateras att barnbiblioteket har tagit form i spänningen mellan biblioteket och bibliotekarien som verksamhetens överordnade princip samt att det är skillnad mellan att vara biblioteksanvändare och bibliotekarieanvändare i samhället. En ytterligare slutsats är att barnbiblioteket har tagit form utifrån idéer hämtade från profession snarare än från politik.

Över djupen mot höjden : En biografi över Oskar II:s bibliotek

- Avhandlingen är en objektbiografisk studie av Oskar II:s (1829–1907) bibliotek och dess betydelse för honom och för monarkin, framför allt utifrån ett legitimeringsperspektiv. Forskningsfrågorna fokuserar på användningen av biblioteket, dess kontext, samt dess institutionella utveckling under perioden cirka 1850–2020. Källorna utgörs huvudsakligen av bevarade böcker, äldre kataloger, Bernadottebibliotekets referensavdelning samt handlingar ur Slottsarkivet och det Bernadotteska arkivet. Den objektbiografiska metoden – där grundtanken är att ett objekt inte kan beskrivas utifrån endast en punkt i dess ”liv” utan hela dess biografi måste skrivas för att det ska förstås – används i avhandlingen både gällande viktiga enskilda volymer och samlingen som helhet. Det teoretiska ramverket utgår från Jürgen Habermas och Max Webers resonemang om den borgerliga offentligheten respektive legitimering och syftar till att tolka hur biblioteket bidrog till Oskar II:s arbete för att legitimera sig själv och monarkin inför den borgerliga offentligheten samt hur det använts i samma syfte efter 1907. Grunden för undersökningen är fem viktiga ämnesområden i boksamlingen: svensk skönlitteratur, den svensk-norska unionen, svensk stormaktstid, religion/filosofi samt örlogsflottan. Ämnena representerar olika aspekter av Oskar II:s liv och gärning och tolkas utifrån hans tre roller som statsöverhuvud, som samlande gestalt och som enskild individ. Biblioteket som institution analyseras, från dess grundande som ett rent privat bibliotek till dagens komplexa minnesinstitution där museala funktioner löper parallellt med arkiv-, biblioteks- och forskningsarbete. Avhandlingen undersöker verksamheten i form av kunskapsorganisation, förvärv, utlån, gallring, personella och ekonomiska resurser samt uppdrag och mål, under och efter Oskar II:s tid. Biblioteket sätts vidare in i en svensk kunglig bibliotekshistorisk kontext; dessutom genomförs en europeisk utblick i form av en jämförelse med flera andra furstliga bibliotek under 1800-talet. Bibliotekets materiella och rumsliga narrativ, där böckernas skiftande betydelse och innebörd samt samlingarnas flytt från små diskreta lokaler med begränsad åtkomst till ett av Stockholms slotts största rum med breddat tillträde, är av central betydelse för förståelsen av det som idag är Bernadottebiblioteket.

Everyday Life Information Practice : Affordances and Strategies within a Facebook Group

- Social networking sites are integral in reshaping how we access and interact with information and others. This doctoral thesis aims to offer an in-depth understanding of engagement in an everyday life information practice within a private Facebook group. To achieve this aim, I conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 members of a private Facebook group for foreign mothers situated in Sweden. The thesis consists of a framing essay and four research articles exploring different aspects of how the group has formed, managed, and navigated engagement in information activities within the Facebook group. Grounded in a sociocultural perspective of mediated action, the research draws on specialised concepts and theories to further unpack key themes in the study. These include affordances, cognitive authority, situated learning, community of practice, communication privacy management, the imagined audience, and context collapse. These concepts and theories form the theoretical framework for the thesis, enabling interpretations of members’ accounts of opportunities and challenges entailed with engagement in information activities within the Facebook group and the ways these were managed and navigated by the group. The findings show that the Facebook group offers a distinctive online space providing affordances that simultaneously facilitate and constrain joint information activities. The study highlights six key affordances offered by the group: visibility, persistence, associations, accessibility, invisibility, and inaccessibility. Negotiation of mutual and shared goals and rules is found to be essential for sustaining a space that facilitates members’ engagement in information activities. However, three complex phenomena within the Facebook group are highlighted as limiting and complicating this engagement: context collapse, time collapse, and spatial collapse. These phenomena relate to issues concerning lack of anonymity; control over information quality, flow, and privacy boundaries; and the presence of large, diverse, and evolving audiences. Several challenges and risks are identified as a result, relating to the assessment of information credibility, management of privacy, and management of conflicts. The study discusses strategic ways the group manages and navigates these opportunities and challenges. Overall, the study offers an understanding of the complex formation, engagement, and management of an everyday life information practice within a Facebook group. This understanding contributes theoretical and practical insights into broader discussions on the use of Facebook groups for informational purposes in everyday life.

Sociotechnical Imaginaries of Data Feminism : How Scholars with Feminist Approaches Interpret the Datafied Present and Envision Futurities

- In the global West, electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets have become ubiquitous tools for daily life. They facilitate communication, navigation, and commerce, among other online activities that generate unprecedented amounts of user data. This licentiate thesis examines the perspectives of scholars employing feminist approaches towards understanding and conceptualizing emergent technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, machine learning, and algorithms, which utilize data as a representation of realities and lived experiences. Grounding their perspectives in the feminist tradition of critiquing power structures and hegemonies, scholars offer valuable insights into envisioning technologically supported futurities that transcend mere inclusion and instead prioritize diversity. This text examines how scholars with feminist approaches understand the datafied present and envision futurities. This thesis also explores how potential risks and benefits of datafication, the translation of action into data, are expressed in data feminist texts. In the first article, Feminist Data Studies and the Emergence of a New Data Feminist Knowledge Domain, a series of searches were conducted in databases and search engines, followed by citation chaining to collect relevant scholarly texts. Data collection was followed by visualization and close reading, while employing sociotechnical imaginaries as a conceptual lens. This approach facilitated an exploration of how scholars with feminist perspectives envision, interpret, and reimagine data-driven technologies. The second article, Utopian and Dystopian Sociotechnical Imaginaries of Big Data in a portion of the corpus, compared framings and perceptions of big data to those identified in the policies of the European Commission. The summary essay underscores several key findings. Firstly, the nuanced implications of visibility and representation in the context of datafication. Particularly, the tension and the contrasting imperatives, to amplify the visibility of marginalized groups and to safeguard their privacy and mitigate potential harm. Secondly, the centrality of power dynamics and minority group vulnerability in discussions surrounding control over data flows. Finally, corrective approaches and feminist refusal were found to be the ways in which scholars are attempting to contribute to shaping more equitable and inclusive technological futures. These findings contribute to making visible the hegemonies and power imbalances in datafied systems from the perspectives of scholars with feminist approaches as well as to understanding how they are pushing back against them.

Material Awareness : Exploring the Entanglement of Library Digitization and Digital Textual Scholarship

- In the past thirty years, the significant technical developments of digital imaging have shifted the ways that library staff produce digital collections derived from textual materials. This shift has introduced new digitization workflows, new partners, and new internal and external tensions. Those tensions, partners, and workflows present an opportunity to reconsider the role of library staff in the development of digital textual scholarship. Digitization has previously been described as a neutral, “clerical” task, devoid of “any critical or bibliographical analysis;” serving merely as a preamble to the critical and intellectual work performed by textual scholars situated in academic departments. However, this description obscures the often complex, symbiotic relationship among textual scholars and a range of library staff involved in digitization – a relationship which evolves depending upon the aims and outputs of each project. This relationship between library digitizers and textual scholars has not been analyzed to any great extent in library and information science (LIS) or digital humanities (DH) literature. To address this gap, this doctoral dissertation explores concepts drawn from library and information science and textual scholarship and uses those concepts as a framework to analyze the activities involved in library digitization and how the people who perform those activities characterize their community of practice. The dissertation also identifies the tensions and barriers faced by both library digitizers and textual scholars and how those factors affect their collaboration. Drawing on a small handful of previous studies and the empirical, ethnographic work performed for this thesis, the dissertation argues that digitization activities in libraries are quickly becoming more advanced, and that several phases can involve aspects of textual, image, and material criticism. Aside from possessing technical skills, library staff must make critical choices and judgments throughout the digitization process, from selection of materials to production, presentation, preservation, and beyond. Carefully documenting those choices and motivations provides empirical grounding for the claim that digitization is a critically informed process that can shape future collaborations and research outputs. In particular, the critical decisions surrounding the creative production of digital artifacts significantly condition their use and reuse in digital scholarship projects. As such, advanced library digitization represents a set of critical transmission activities wherein library staff can serve not only as helpmates but also as intellectual partners in the production of digital textual scholarship.

- Denna avhandling utforskar hur unga personer resonerar om och analyserar sin användning av sociala medier för att uttrycka identitet. Tretton 16-åringar med invandrarbakgrund bidrog som medforskare till att forma forskningens riktning och innehåll. Medforskning som forskningsansats innebar arbete i tre forskargrupper där en anpassad version av photovoice (se Wang & Burris 1997), skapande av collage och gruppdiskussioner låg till grund för insamling av empiri, tolkning och analys. Studien syftar även till att utforska och bidra med kunskap om utmaningar, möjligheter och konsekvenser av att involvera unga som aktiva deltagare i forskning. Studien utgår från en förståelse för identitet som något som görs i en reflexiv process där personer förhåller sig till historisk och sociokulturell kontext. Utgångspunkt för analyserna tas i ett dramaturgiskt perspektiv (se Goffman 1959/2014) där identitet synliggörs genom studiet av människors interaktioner. I analys av det empiriska materialet framträdde tre strategier för att presentera identitet i sociala medier: idealsjälvet, det nedtonade jaget, och det (till synes) opolerade jaget. Resultaten visade också hur den egna identiteten var sammanflätad med andras framträdanden, hur uppfattade normer formade hur identiteter uttrycktes, samt olika strategier som användes för att undvika eller mildra sociala sanktioner om normer inte följdes eller medvetet utmanades. Tolkningen av medforskning tar sin utgångspunkt i Paulo Freires pedagogik (1970/2012). Denna syftade till att synliggöra och utmana förtryckande strukturer genom gemensamt lärande och utforskande med utgångspunkt i människors liv. Studien synliggjorde utmaningar med forskningsansatsen som uppstod när både medforskare och forskare förde med bekanta roller in i forskningen, roller som bar på inneboende maktstrukturer. Avhandlingen bidrar med kunskap om vad som hindrar och möjliggör för deltagare i medforskningsprojekt att skifta positioner, exempelvis från anpassning till positioner som kunniga handlande och forskande subjekt. Dessutom diskuteras utmaningar för en process som syftar till gemensam kunskapsproduktion, samt hur medforskares röster re-presenteras.

SOUND READING : Exploring and conceptualising audiobook practices among young adults

- Audiobooks and subscription services are becoming increasingly popular in Sweden as well as many other parts of the world. This compilation thesis develops knowledge and conceptualisations of audiobook reading practices in the context of subscription services and apps. This is carried out by exploring audiobook use among young people, with a particular emphasis on the temporal and spatial aspects of the practices and the tools used. The context of the thesis is Sweden, with subscription services and users in the country. The thesis takes an explorative approach, where several theories and research methods are operationalised in four different articles. Schatzki's practice theory forms a foundation for the thesis, with the theory of timespace applied to consider temporal and spatial aspects of activities. Furthermore, the theories of remediation and affordances have been included to examine the digital technology related to contemporary audiobooks. Different aspects of audiobook practices have been explored; firstly, with temporal transaction logs collected from a subscription service. Secondly, semistructured interviews with ten young audiobook users, and thirdly, an app feature analysis focusing on the player function in three audiobook apps. As such, the approaches are both qualitative and quantitative, and digital methods are employed together with more traditional research methods in virtual forms.The transaction log study reveals that the average subscription-service user listens to audiobooks for a considerable amount of time every day. There also appears to be a correlation between audiobook listening and the work or school day, with more audiobook use carried out during daytime on weekdays, but also at bedtime. The analysis of the interview study highlights that audiobook reading practices have become part of users' everyday routines, and listening is closely interwoven with other daily activities. For young people, audiobooks are combined with commutes, schoolwork, chores, exercise and leisure activities. Listening has become routine for specific purposes, such as improving the enjoyment of another task, increasing reading time or supporting the user's wellbeing. Audiobook apps play a significant role in contemporary audiobook practices. The app feature analysis explores features in the player function of three subscription service apps and has found that some features make certain reading practices easier, while others create hindrances for users. Some app features are used for adjusting time, such as changing the speed of the book, setting a sleep timer or rewinding the audiobook when the user has lost focus. Moreover, some users alternate between the printed and audio version of a book title, and when possible, then use a feature for selecting the track to switch between formats. Finally, the thesis also contributes by developing and clarifying concepts relating to audiobooks, subscription services and reading. For example, the concepts of reading by listening, mobile reading and stationary reading are introduced here to highlight the specificity of different reading practices. Furthermore, the business models of subscription services have been conceptualised as following either a library model or bookshop model. Research on digital and subscription- based audiobooks is still in its initial stages. An ambition with this PhD thesis is to contribute with new knowledge and lay some conceptual groundwork relating to this topic.
