  • Neoliberal Restructuring in Education and Health Professions in Europe : Questions of Global Class and Gender
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - : Sage Publications Ltd.. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 58:4, s. 551-569
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on a meta-analysis of previous research on restructuring in relation to education and health professions in Europe and more globally. It highlights common developments and signals the significant and important role of specific cycles of public to private transformation in production relations in these professions over the course of the last century and a successive movement of labour from the domestic sphere of the home to private industry as commoditized labour power, as among the most significant common global features. State involvement has been an important intermediary in these processes, by which relationships that were formerly largely untainted by commerce have become relationships involving the direct buying and selling of labour power. The process of the creation of economically productive labour power also seems to be expanding in scope in the professions, with negative consequences for service workers, low-GDP countries and lower-class fractions of recipient-consumers worldwide.

  • Socialisation and Commercialisation in the Restructuring of Education and Health Professions in Europe: Questions of Global Class and Gender
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 58:4, s. 551-569
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the transforming capitalist welfare state and its education system, and focuses especially on the Nordic model of welfare state and education in Finland. It shows how restructuring processes towards the competition state are proceeding on both policy and institutional levels. Nevertheless, the basic structures of the Nordic model or pattern and especially the principles of public education and the comprehensive and local school are left intact. By applying an institutional approach in the analysis, a new path generation and institutional patterns are emerging, but their legitimization and establishment will take a long time. Changes in policy and organization are much faster to occur than those in sociocultural settings. Such success stories as the Danish labour market reform and the rise of the Finnish knowledge-intensive ICT cluster have paved the way for this transformation. There is still a possibility that a welfare state strategy and a competition state strategy will coexist.

  • Tackling violence in intimacy : Interacting power relations and policy change
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 61:2, s. 171-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the article is to discuss interacting power relations and policy change. Children’s exposure to intimate partner violence and policy change in Sweden is the empirical case in point. It is argued that to understand the shift in Swedish policy as regards exposure to intimate partner violence it is important to recognize, on the one hand, the social order shaping policy and practice, and, on the other hand, the role of collective and individual actors in the field as well as the opportunity structure that enables social change. Furthermore, subordinating children to adults comes across as a particularly potent way of challenging gendered inequality in the form of men’s violence against women in intimate relationships. Possibilities for social change thus seem to be greater in relation to gender, than age. An empirically sensitive and actor-centred intersectional analysis must be sophisticated enough to grasp complexities such as these if we are to be able to fully understand agency and policy change within a complex social order.

  • The sociological significance of domestic violence : tensions, paradoxes, and implications
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - London, United Kingdom : SAGE Publications (UK and US). - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 61:2, s. 152-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sociology and sociological theory has been effective in analyzing societal and institutional conflict and violence, but less so the specifics of interpersonal violence. This article examines the sociological significance of domestic violence. This relationship, or sometimes its neglect, is underlain by several tensions and paradoxes, which in turn have broader implications for sociology and sociological theory. These matters are examined through: the possible paradox of violence and intimacy in the phenomenon of domestic violence; the importance of the naming and framing of such violence; explanation, responsibility and agency; and gender, hegemony and discourse in mens violence to known women, as part of a multifaceted power approach.

  • Welfare State Restructuring in Education and its National Refractions Finnish, Irish and Swedish Teachers' Perceptions of Current Changes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 58:4, s. 597-622
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The governance of the welfare state is going through profound transformations in many western countries. Similarly, reforms, influenced by neoliberal ideology, are being applied particularly in the field of education all over Europe. However, it is likely that there are divergent outcomes as these widely shared models are adapted in historical and local particularities. The aim of this article is to examine how Finnish, Irish and Swedish teachers perceive change in professional control and autonomy, and the influence of documentation and evaluation on daily work. Correspondence analysis on survey data (N = 2304) shows that whereas the Finnish teachers regard that the new regulatory measures do not influence their daily work much, the Irish teachers, and also the Swedish teachers, tend to feel the increasing influence of control and accountability. Obviously, despite the similarities in formal policy and education acts, there are different kinds of restructuring operating in Finland, Ireland and Sweden.

  • Variations in professions’ adaption of quality reforms : the cases of doctors and auditors in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - London : Sage Publications. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 60:5, s. 672-689
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates variations in two professions’ adaption of quality reforms. The adaption of reforms is viewed as a part of the professions’ legitimacy and identity processes. Literature in the area suggests that the adaption of reforms is influenced by the profession’s knowledge base, professional norms, organizational belonging and organizational field. The two cases here on how doctors and auditors adapt to quality reforms show that the influences of these factors are, however, moulded by the professions’ strategies and the salience of the different aforementioned factors. A general conclusion is that compatibility between the bases of knowledge and the professional norms are vital for the adaption of reforms and that organizational fields are important for setting the agenda. Organizational belongings, on the other hand, seem of less importance for adaption of quality reforms

  • The rationalization of civil society
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 59:1, s. 5-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two ideas are almost universally accepted as reality in political sociology. One is that numbers are declining in nearly all membership associations. The usual interpretation of this phenomenon is that it occurs because of individualization. The other is that the character of collective action has changed. This idea, which stems from Touraine, Melucci and Castells, states that a new historical category of social action has emerged, one that resembles action in primary groups rather than in organizations and in some way is a victory over the iron law of oligarchy. This article questions both ideas. The author intends to show that another historical process is in play here, namely, a process of ‘inert rationalization’ in social movements, political parties and associations, which is taking place in Europe with different starting points and at different tempos. The result of this process can be summed up as ‘more organization with fewer people’. Domination, inherent in oligarchic organizations, is being transformed by the creation of a new organizational boundary between elite (or profession) and members. The point is that it is membership itself as a form for affiliation that is disappearing, not just members. The article argues that this is mainly because resource mobilization patterns have historically changed from the mobilization of resources drawn from members to the mobilization of resources drawn from other organizations. Finally, the article analyses the importance of the unstructured power fields (or open spaces) created by rationalization processes for social innovation and new social movements.

  • Respect and agency : An empirical exploration
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 61:1, s. 57-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both in social science and in everyday life, 'respect' is an important and widely used term to describe positive conduct of one person towards another. However, just what respectful behaviour refers to, and how it can be differentiated from considerate, tolerant, kind, etc. behaviour continues to elude social-scientific analysis. In order to investigate the meaning that people give to the concept of respect, the authors carried out focus groups in that participants discussed two vignettes regarding respect and a very closely related concept - considerateness. A systematic analysis of the transcripts preliminary supported the study's hypothesis that respect is a form of behaviour which refers to the ascribed agency of another person, as opposed to non-agential properties such as needs or feelings.

  • Because Women Will Always be Women and Men are Just Getting Older : Intersecting Discourses of Ageing and Gender
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Current Sociology. - : SAGE Publications. - 0011-3921 .- 1461-7064. ; 58:6, s. 879-896
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to examine a meeting between discourses of gender and age at the macro-level, applying an intersectional research approach. The discussion of intersecting discourses is based on empirical material from Poland. It refers to the condition of social policy towards age and gender, in Poland, as well as the media discourse. The results of the study indicate that the intersection between discourses of age and gender involves discriminatory practices that result in an establishment of one-dimensional and pejorative subject positions. Two main subject positions of grandma and pensioner exemplify the main mechanism of a dynamic relationship between both discourses where the order implied by one discourse is strengthened at the expense of the other. The phenomenon of gendered age and aged gender reflects the key rule for understanding subject positions which pertain to categories of older women and older men.
