  • The Company Approach to Software Engineering Project Courses
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Education. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9359 .- 1557-9638. ; 55:4, s. 445-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teaching larger software engineering project courses at the end of a computing curriculum is a way for students to learn some aspects of real-world jobs in industry. Such courses, often referred to as capstone courses, are effective for learning how to apply the skills they have acquired in, for example, design, test, and configuration management. However, these courses are typically performed in small teams, giving only a limited realistic perspective of problems faced when working in real companies. This paper describes an alternative approach to classic capstone projects, with the aim of being more realistic from an organizational, process, and communication perspective. This methodology, called the company approach, is described by intended learning outcomes, teaching/learning activities, and assessment tasks. The approach is implemented and evaluated in a larger Masters student course.

  • Application of Project-Based Learning (PBL) to the Teaching of Electrical Power Systems Engineering
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Education. - 0018-9359 .- 1557-9638. ; 55:4, s. 495-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Project-based learning (PBL), a learning environment in which projects drive learning, has been successfully used in various courses in the educational programs of different disciplines. However, concerns have been raised as to the breadth of the content covered and, in particular, whether PBL can be applied to specialized subjects without compromising the coverage of the required technical content. This paper discusses the advantages and drawbacks of using the PBL methodology in teaching specialized subjects in electrical power engineering, based on the authors' reflections and student feedback. The design and delivery of a PBL-based course in power system modeling and analysis is used as an example. It is asserted that proper usage of PBL makes it possible to deliver both technical content and generic professional skills in a specialized course.

  • Insights from Implementing a System for Peer-Review
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Education. - 0018-9359 .- 1557-9638. ; 56:3, s. 261-267
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Courses at the Master’s level in automatic control and signal processing cover mathematical theories and algorithms for control, estimation, and filtering. However, giving students practical experience in how to use these algorithms is also an important part of these courses. A goal is that the students should not only be able to understand and derive these algorithms, but also be able to apply them to real-life technical problems. The latter is achieved by assigning more time to the laboratory tutorials and designing them in such a way that the exercises are open for interpretation; an example of this would be giving the students more freedom to decide how to acquire the data needed to solve the given exercises. The students are asked to hand in a laboratory report in which they describe how they solved the exercises. This paper presents a double-blind peer-review process for laboratory reports, introduced at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Linköping University, Sweden. A survey was administered to students, and the results are summarized in this paper. Also discussed are the teachers’ experiences of peer review and of how students perform later in their education in writing their Master’s theses.

  • Evaluating Constructive Alignment Theory Implementation in a Power Systems Analysis Course Through Repertory Grids
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Education. - 0018-9359 .- 1557-9638. ; 56:4, s. 443-452
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Individuals perceive their environment in terms of their individual mental structures that in turn determine their attitudes toward that environment. This is the focus of personal construct theory (PCT), which states that experiences are meaningful only in relation to the way they are "constructed." Within the higher education system, the "constructs" developed by students determine the way in which they perceive their learning environment and are used to judge or evaluate their learning experiences. To reveal the constructs developed by students, a structured interview methodology known as the repertory grid technique can be used. In this paper, the repertory grid technique is exploited to evaluate a consensus-based constructive alignment theory implementation in a M.Sc.-level power systems analysis course. The repertory grid technique is utilized as an approach to effectively gather feedback from students through interviews during course evaluation meetings. It is shown that the repertory grid technique provides much valuable, insightful quantitative and qualitative data. Experience in using this technique revealed shortcomings that are illustrated and discussed in detail. Various visual and statistical methods are applied to analyze the elicited repertory grids. These analyses, along with the other traditional feedback channels, gave insight into the teaching and learning activities (TLAs) involved in implementing Constructive Alignment Theory in a course and helped determine specific elements of the course design needing improvement for future course deliveries, thus helping to improve education in a cornerstone course of power systems engineering.

  • Facilitating Constructive Alignment in Power Systems Engineering Education Using Free and Open-Source Software
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Education. - : IEEE. - 0018-9359 .- 1557-9638. ; 55:3, s. 309-318
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes how the use of free and open-source software (FOSS) can facilitate the application of constructive alignment theory in power systems engineering education by enabling the deep learning approach in power system analysis courses. With this aim, this paper describes the authors’ approach in using the Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) for undergraduate and graduate education. Interviews with former students reveal the positive impact that the use of FOSS in general, and PSAT in particular, had on their learning and how it has influenced their professional life.

  • Fast Estimation of Relations Between Aggregated Train Power System Data and Traffic Performance
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 60:1, s. 16-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transports via rail are increasing, and major railway infrastructure investments are expected. An important part of this infrastructure is the railway power supply system (RPSS). Future railway power demands are not known. The more distant the uncertain future, the greater the number of scenarios that have to be considered. Large numbers of scenarios make time-demanding (some minutes, each) full simulations of electric railway power systems less attractive and simplifications more so. The aim, and main contribution, of this paper is to propose a fast approximator that uses aggregated traction system information as inputs and outputs. This approximator can be used as an investment planning constraint in the optimization. It considers that there is a limit on the intensity of the train traffic, depending on the strength of the power system. This approximator approach has not previously been encountered in the literature. In the numerical example of this paper, the approximator inputs are the power system configuration; the distance between a connection from contact line to the public grid, to another connection, or to the end of the contact line; the average values and the standard deviations of the inclinations of the railway; the average number of trains; and their average velocity for that distance. The output is the maximal attainable average velocity of an added train for the described railway power system section. The approximator facilitates studies of many future railway power system loading scenarios, combined with different power system configurations, for investment planning analysis. The approximator is based on neural networks. An additional value of the approximator is that it provides an understanding of the relations between power system configuration and train traffic performance.

  • Automotive Threat Assessment Design for Combined Braking and Steering Maneuvers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; PP:99, s. 1-1526
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The active safety systems available on the passenger cars market today, automatically deploy automated safety interventions in situations where the driver is in need of assistance. In this paper, we consider the process of determining whether such interventions are needed. In particular, we design a threat assessment method which evaluates the risk that the vehicle will either leave the road or its maneuverability will be significantly reduced within a finite time horizon. The proposed threat assessment method accounts for combined braking and steering maneuvers, which results in a nonlinear dynamical vehicle behavior. We formulate the threat assessment problem as a nonconvex constraint satisfaction problem and implement an algorithm that solves it through interval-based consistency techniques. Experimental validation of the proposed approach indicates that constraint violation can be predicted, while avoiding the detection of false threats.

  • Improving Students With Rubric-Based Self-Assessment and Oral Feedback
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Education. - : IEEE. - 0018-9359. ; 55:3, s. 319-325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rubrics and oral feedback are approaches to help students improve performance and meet learning outcomes. However, their effect on the actual improvement achieved is inconclusive. This paper evaluates the effect of rubrics and oral feedback on student learning outcomes. An experiment was conducted in a software engineering course on requirements engineering, using the two approaches in course assignments. Both approaches led to statistically significant improvements, though no material improvement (i.e., a change by more than one grade) was achieved. The rubrics led to a significant decrease in the number of complaints and questions regarding grades.

  • Fingerprinting Localization in Wireless Networks Based on Received-Signal-Strength Measurements : A Case Study on WiMAX Networks
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 59:1, s. 283-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the problem of fingerprinting localization in wireless networks based on received-signal-strength (RSS) observations. First, the performance of static localization using power maps (PMs) is improved with a new approach called the base-station-strict (BS-strict) methodology, which emphasizes the effect of BS identities in the classical fingerprinting. Second, dynamic motion models with and without road network information are used to further improve the accuracy via particle filters. The likelihood-calculation mechanism proposed for the particle filters is interpreted as a soft version (called BS-soft) of the BS-strict approach applied in the static case. The results of the proposed approaches are illustrated and compared with an example whose data were collected from a WiMAX network in a challenging urban area in the capitol city of Brussels, Belgium.
