  • Patterns of dynamic growth in medium-sized companies : beyond the dichotomy of organic versus acquired growth
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 50:4, s. 457-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Current research commonly investigates two different growth modes, organic growth and growth by acquisitions. Studies on acquisition-based growth typically draw on cross-sectional quantitative studies of large firms that treat all acquisitions the same. Our study takes a different approach, and explores different growth modes of a smaller sample of medium-sized companies drawing on a longitudinal, qualitative case-study design. This research design allows us to identify eight different growth modes that companies combine in unique ways over time. Thereby, we illustrate that patterns of dynamic growth in medium-sized firms are much more diverse and complex than commonly assumed.

  • The Relationship between Founder Team Diversity and Innovation Performance: The Moderating Role of Causation Logic
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - Kidlington : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 49:4, s. 464-476
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines two factors commonly thought to be potential contributors to business success, namely diversity and the logic that drives entrepreneurial decision making. The empirical context is new ventures, and data collected using a survey of new ventures are used to investigate the contribution of founder team informational diversity to innovation performance, as well as the moderating effect of the degree of causation logic used in decision making. The findings confirm that founder team informational diversity is positively related to both idea generation and the implementation of ideas into new products or services. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the relationships between founder diversity and both idea generation and realized innovation are moderated by the logic of entrepreneurial decision making. The relationship between founder team informational diversity and idea generation is stronger when decision making is based on strong causation logic, while the relationship between founder team informational diversity and realized innovation is stronger when decision making is based to a lesser degree on causation logic.

  • Resource Orchestration for Innovation : Structuring and Bundling Resources in Growth- and Maturity-Stage Firms
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 50:4, s. 472-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation is an important outcome for firms across all life-cycle stages, though challenges to this goal vary by a firm's stage of development. In this study, we integrate resource orchestration with contingency theory to theorize how managers differentially orchestrate their firm's resource portfolio and capabilities to develop innovation based on the firm's life-cycle stage. Empirical tests using primary data collected from 189 managers of U.S. and Italian firms based on the policy capturing method provide support for our hypotheses. Overall, this research contributes to our understanding of how firms manage their resources to create innovation over the firm's life-cycle.

  • Value Creation at the Subsidiary Level : Testing the MNC Headquarters Parenting Advantage Logic
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 50:1, s. 48-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to test the assumptions of the headquarters parenting advantage in multinational firms within the context of subsidiary innovation processes. Specifically, we explore the relationship between the selective involvement of headquarters in both innovation development and transfer processes and their related performance in a data set of 85 innovation projects analysed with structural equation modelling. The findings provide only limited support to the parenting advantage logic as they show that although the headquarters are able to select subsidiary-level strategic innovation processes, their involvement is hampering the performance of these processes. Consequently, we offer new extensions to the reasoning behind the parenting advantage logic by introducing four complementary theoretical explanations for the potentially harmful effects of headquarters' involvement in subsidiary innovation-related activities.

  • The Strategic Management of High-Growth Firms : A Review and Theoretical Conceptualization
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 50:4, s. 431-456
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scholars' knowledge of the factors behind high-growth firms remains fragmented. This paper provides a systematic review of the empirical literature concerning high-growth firms with a focus on the strategic aspects contributing to growth. Based on our review of 39 articles, we identify five drivers of high growth: human capital, strategy, human resource management, innovation, and capabilities. These drivers are combined to develop a conceptual model of high-growth firms that includes potential contingency factors among. the five drivers. We also propose a research agenda to deepen the study of high-growth firms in strategic management.

  • Internationalization Through Sociopolitical Relationships: MNEs in India.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Long Range Planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-1872 .- 0024-6301. ; 48:5, s. 334-345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses how foreign Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) with limited resources may build a position in a challenging and culturally different emerging market. We apply exchange theory and an interorganizational approach, and discuss how firms develop a unique set of relationships and gain the support of business, as well as political and social actors, to manage their operations in an emerging market. Based on two case studies and several in-depth interviews with managers and decision makers in Sweden and India, we demonstrate how Tetra Pak and Axis Communications, two Swedish multinationals, are able to innovate and create new values for customers and other stakeholders in the Indian market. Our emphasis on political and social actors, combined with business relationships, offers a new understanding about how MNEs may manage emerging markets. The study also shows how exchange theory can help in analyzing this internationalization process.

  • Managing Interorganizational Innovation Projects : Mitigating the Negative Effects of Equivocality Through Knowledge Search Strategies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 49:6, s. 691-705
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Equivocality, or divergent interpretations and understandings of tasks and knowledge, has negative effects on performance because it increases conflicts and creates communication and coordination challenges in inter-organizational innovation projects. However, equivocality may also stimulate team members to discuss beliefs and interpretations in ways that provide improved understanding of knowledge and tasks. We theorize that mitigation of negative effects of equivocality on project performance is conditional on explorative or exploitative knowledge search mode. Exploitative search (increasing search depth) allows for rapid learning based on the partners' existing knowledge, but it also limits a team's ability to interpret and combine diverse knowledge. Explorative search (increasing search breadth), on the other hand, allows for novel combinations of diverse knowledge and thereby alleviates the negative effect of equivocality on performance. Based on quantitative data from 251 respondents in 52 heavy-engineering innovation projects in four multinational corporations based in Sweden and from their 29 collaborating partner firms worldwide, we find that equivocality reduces project performance, but that joint explorative search mitigates the negative effect of equivocality on project performance. However, we do not find support for the moderation effect of exploitative search on the relationship between equivocality and project performance. Theoretical and managerial contributions as well as limitations and suggestions for future research are presented

  • Strategies for business model innovation: How firms reel in migrating value
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Longe Range Planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 51:1, s. 82-110
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper brings together firm-level research on business models and industry-level research on value migration to examine patterns of business model innovation. We draw on qualitative data from 14 cases and 68 interviews in the computer and telecommunications industries to demonstrate how business model innovation is sensitive to industry-wide forces of value migration. Based on our analysis we conclude that when value is rapidly migrating across industries and between firms, proactively substituting key elements of the primary business model provides a better fit with the new value landscape than launching secondary business models in parallel. We suggest four underlying mechanisms that link business model innovation, value migration and subsequent outcomes. Unpacking business model innovation allows us to discuss contingencies for the main business model strategies, specifically in terms of limitations to—and opportunities of—changing the primary business model and the practice of parallel business models.

  • The evolution of intellectual property strategy in innovation ecosystems: Uncovering complementary and substitute appropriability regimes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 51:2, s. 303-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we attempt to extend and nuance the debate on intellectual property (IP) strategy, appropriation, and open innovation in dynamic and systemic innovation contexts. We present the case of four generations of mobile telecommunications systems (covering the period 1980-2015), and describe and analyze the co-evolution of strategic IP management and innovation ecosystems. Throughout this development, technologies and technological relationships were governed with different and shifting degrees of formality. Simultaneously, firms differentiated technology accessibility across actors and technologies to benefit from openness and appropriation of innovation. Our analysis shows that the discussion of competitiveness and appropriability needs to be expanded from the focal appropriability regime and complementary assets to the larger context of the innovation ecosystem and its cooperative and competitive actor relations, with dispersed complementary and substitute assets and technologies. Consequently, the shaping of complementary and substitute appropriability regimes is central when strategizing in dynamic and systemic innovation contexts. This holds important implications for the management of open innovation, innovation ecosystems, platforms, and coopetition.
