  • Navigating challenging contexts : Costs and benefits of codified acquisition experience
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 54:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite its intuitive appeal, acquisition experience has not shown a clear benefit to acquirers, and we argue the applicability of acquisition experience depends on goals and context. Using survey data, we consider the effects of applying codified experience for two common acquisition goals involving knowledge transfer and market expansion. Our findings reveal a 'double-edged sword' effect, where on one hand, codification mitigates negative effects of industry rivalry on knowledge transfer. However, on the other hand, codification amplifies negative effects of industry rivalry on market expansion and internal turmoil on knowledge transfer. Beyond demonstrating the importance of goals and context contingencies for determining acquisition experience effect, our results reconcile conflicting research findings to identify when codified experience is beneficial in acquisitions.

  • Looking different vs thinking differently : Impact of TMT diversity on coopetition capability
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 53:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we focus on the micro-foundations of coopetition capability and ask: "where does coopetition capability come from?" Drawing upon social psychology and cognitive theories, we seek to offer insights into the micro-foundations of coopetition capability by focusing on the role of top management team (TMT) diversity. We suggest that TMT diversity emerges from two distinct attributes of the team members: surface-level (e.g., age, gender, nationality) and deep-level (e.g., knowledge and experience). We argue that TMT diversity based on surface-level attributes contributes negatively while TMT diversity based on deep-level attributes contributes positively to coopetition capability. We test our hypotheses using a novel dataset that combines primary data and employee level secondary data of a sample of 315 Swedish firms. Results provide broad support for our hypotheses. We discuss the implications of our findings and key limitations of our study.

  • Emotion in strategic management : A review and future research agenda
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 55:4
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emotion in strategic management has attracted increasing scholarly interest during the past twenty-five years. Researchers have demonstrated the nature and significance of emotion in strategic management from a broad range of perspectives across different levels of analysis. Given the expanding research on the topic, the time is ripe to synthesize this diverse and multifaceted body of knowledge. In a thematic synthesis of the literature, we address the following questions: how does emotion influence strategic management, and how can the field be further developed? We review emotion constructs used in the extant literature and identify three themes related to how emotions influence strategic management: the nonconscious influence of emotions, emotion regulation, and collective emotions. Based on these themes and our analysis, we propose three areas of future research to inspire the field to develop further: (1) scope conditions of emotion research in strategic management; (2) capturing emotion in strategic management; and (3) the ethics, power and politics of emotions in strategic management.

  • When the display of emotion is not enough : An emotion boundary management perspective on the quality of strategic decisions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 56:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we take an interest in how family business members create their emotion rules and emotion boundaries in and between the two spheres of business and family and how they manage these. We show that this management of emotion boundaries affects the quality of strategic decisions. We conclude that family members create emotion rules and emotion boundaries based on the meanings and understandings of time, space, and/or the relationships that are embedded within the family business emotion-framing rules. Depending on their concern for their own interests and goals, family goals and/or family business goals, they engage in emotional displays that lead to emotional balance, dissonance, or stamina. We reveal how emotional displays affect the decision outcome quality. We therefore contribute to the literature on the role of emotion boundary management in strategic management by evaluating a specific context where the spheres of family and business overlap with more complexity than in a typical case.

  • Small and large firms’ trade-off between benefits and risks when choosing a coopetitor for innovation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 53:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research investigates the extent to which small and large firms differ when assessing the benefits and risks provided by competitors as partners in innovation. Scholars have shown that coopetition can provide both significant benefits and risks for participating firms. The risks associated with firm competition and the trade-off firms make between the risks and benefits that can be obtained through coopetition must be considered when choosing a partnering firm. In addition, we argue that the firm size could affect the evaluation of benefits and the willingness to take risks such that small and large firms differ in their decision making. Therefore, we address the following questions: First, when choosing a coopetitor with which to innovate, to what extent do small and large firms differ in their evaluation of the benefits and risks associated to coopetition? Second, how does this evaluation influence firms’ willingness to coopete? We draw on research on coopetition to hypothesize that small and large firms differ in their evaluation of the six most important benefits of coopetition. To test our hypotheses, we rely on an experimental research design based on a choice-based conjoint (CBC) analysis applied to a sample of innovative Swedish firms. Our results confirm that small and large firms value the benefits and risks associated with coopetitors differently. We show that small firms are less reluctant to coopete than large firms, especially if coopetition allows them to reduce their costs and learn from their coopetitor. In contrast, we show that large firms agree to coopete if coopetition enables them to reduce their time-to-market.

  • When Does Time Enhance Family Firm Performance? : Examining Family Generation in Control and Family Control Dispersion through a Mixed-Gamble Logic
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 57:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate the differential effect of time in terms of generation in control of the firm’s management on family firm performance to address the call in the literature for a more nuanced treatment of family firms and their performance differences. By drawing on the mixed-gamble logic of the behavioral agency model, our work suggests that the family’s socio-emotional wealth (SEW) varies across generations, resulting in complex performance relationships. We theorize and empirically find that earlier-generation family firms protect current SEW and perform increasingly worse while later-generation firms maximize prospective financial wealth and perform increasingly better. Additionally, we argue that high family control dispersion mitigates the negative effect on performance of earlier generations in control and increases the positive effect of later generations in control. Important theoretical and practical contributions emerge from this study.

  • Business- and environment-related drivers of firms' return on natural resources : A configurational approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 54:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sustainability challenges society faces call for firms to manage their use of natural resources wisely. Prior work on firm responses to sustainability challenges has largely focused on explaining and enhancing economic rather than environmental performance. We build on recent developments to extend resource dependence theory to include natural resources and seek to explain how business- and environment-related firm activities influence the use of natural resources. Using a configurational approach, we develop a conceptual model that explains the return on natural resources of firms based on four distinct sets of business- and environment-related comparative advantages. An illustrative application to the car-manufacturing sector demonstrates the practical applicability of our model and provides first insights into configurations we are likely to observe in practice. Our model and its application show that economic success is neither necessary nor sufficient to enhance a firm's return on natural resources.

  • Organizational transformation: Handling the double-edged sword of urgency
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Longe Range Planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 55:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A central idea in organizational research and practice is that change efforts demand a sense of urgency. It is also commonly accepted that renewal beyond incremental improvements demand individuals and teams to have what earlier research has called a “promotion focus”—to think innovatively, see opportunities, and think long term. Urgency, however, leads to a “prevention focus,” with which teams and their members are more inclined to seek incremental improvements and error reduction. Hence, urgency seems to both support change and prevent it. Earlier research has not established the conditions under which urgency may lead to creative and productive outcomes. This paper aims to do so. In a study of seven change initiatives at a large media company undergoing a serious crisis, we found that urgency cues could be productively handled by managers and project team members when they addressed three core relationships: (a) the success-failure relationship, (b) the safety-accountability relationship, and (c) the operative-strategic relationship. We make three related theoretical propositions regarding the role of urgency in innovation-driven change and transformation.

  • All the bottles in one basket? Evaluating the effect of intra-industry diversification on risk
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Long Range Planning. - : Elsevier. - 1873-1872 .- 0024-6301. ; 54:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper develops a framework using Monte Carlo simulation to examine risk/return properties of intra-industry product portfolio composition and diversification. We use product-level data covering all Swedish sales of alcoholic beverages to describe the risk profiles of wholesalers and how they are affected by actual and hypothetical changes to product portfolios. Using a large number of counterfactual portfolios we quantify the diversification benefits of different product portfolio compositions. In this market the most important reductions in variability come from focusing on domestic products and from focusing on product categories that have low variability. The number of products also has a large effect in the simulations, moving from a portfolio of 10 products to one of 20 products cuts standard deviation of cash flows in relation to mean cash flows by more than half. The concentration of import origins plays a minor quantitative role on risk/return profiles in this market.

  • Managing non-family employees’ emotional connection with the family firms via shifting, compensating, and leveraging approaches
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 56:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many family firms deploy strategies and practices to satisfy the needs of family employees. When non-family employees perceive a relational disadvantage compared to family employees, they may lower their evaluation of organizational identity (OI) and, in turn, identify less strongly with the family firm. Because family firms can ill afford to have non-family employees who lack a strong emotional connection with and commitment to the family firm, we explore approaches to foster non-family employees' evaluations of OI. Drawing on organizational identity theory, we find support for three approaches: (1) shifting non-family employees' evaluation of OI by enacting a proactive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, (2) compensating non-family employees for a perceived relational disadvantage by involving them in CSR decision-making, and (3) leveraging non-family employees' context, by drawing on those who share the values of the controlling family. Our theory and results suggest that family firms can deploy different approaches to manage the emotional connection with their non-family employees, which can help explain the observed variation in non-family employees’ organizational identification across family firms.
