  • Self-phase modulation in dispersion compensated optical fibre transmission systems
  • 1996
  • In: Optics Communications. - : Elsevier. - 0030-4018 .- 1873-0310. ; 130:1-3, s. 153-162
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • An analysis is made of the influence of self-phase modulation on optical fibre communication systems where the chromatic dispersion is compensated for by a dispersion compensation fibre. In particular we derive a simple and useful expression for the optimal fibre length in the presence of nonlinearities.

  • Two-photon absorption in five-membered heteroaromatic oligomers
  • 1999
  • In: Optics Communications. - 0030-4018 .- 1873-0310. ; 168:1, s. 297-303
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Structure-to-property relations for the two-photon absorption intensities of oligothiophenes, oligopyrroles, and oligofurans have been studied using ab initio response theory. Power law dependences of the two-photon absorption intensities with respect to the length of the oligomers have been revealed, and localization lengths at which the intensities are completely dominated by one single state are found.

  • Harmonic generation from solid-vacuum interface irradiated at high laser intensities
  • 1995
  • In: Optics Communications. - 0030-4018. ; 117:5-6, s. 431-438
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Observations of harmonic generation from solid Al targets irradiated at intensities of 1017 W/cm2 using a tabletop Ti:sapphire terawatt laser system are reported. For irradiances with laser light at a wavelength of [lambda] = 794nm (the fundamental frequency), harmonics up to the 7th, while for irradiances with frequency doubled laser light ([lambda] = 397) nm harmonics up to the 4th of the respective incident radiation were detected.

  • Bit selective erasure of photon-echo data using Ti : S and dye laser systems: a comparative analysis
  • 1998
  • In: Optics Communications. - 0030-4018. ; 158:1-6, s. 149-158
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It is investigated how the erasure efficiency for a single bit of data, stored using photon echoes, depends on the data writing time and data storage time. A comparative analysis of the erasure efficiency using a Ti:S laser system and a ring dye laser system is performed. The results clearly establish that the Ti:S laser system, which has a narrower line width than the dye laser system, could be used for efficient erasure over a much larger range of data writing and data storage times. A simple threshold detection-based scheme to convert the photon-echo signals into bits is also used to compare the performances of the two laser systems. A surprising but encouraging result was that it may not be absolutely necessary to have a very high erasure efficiency in an operable photon-echo storage system. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. • Single aerosol particle sizing and identification using a coupled-cavity diode laser
  • 1999
  • In: Optics Communications. - 0030-4018. ; 168:1-4, s. 17-24
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A new instrument for aerosol particle size determination and identification by shape is presented. The instrument is based on a diode laser in a coupled cavity. An extinction loss determines the size of a single aerosol particle entering the coupled-cavity diode laser, and a Fourier transformed diffraction image of near-forward scattered light is used for shape and orientation analysis. We describe a model of the coupled-cavity diode laser using light scattering based on Mie theory. This model relates the extinction loss directly to the cross-sectional area of the aerosol particle and shows good agreement with experimental results on aerosol particles and fibers. It is demonstrated that the changes in extinction loss are essentially independent of refractive index of the aerosol particles. The measurable size range of the aerosol particles is 4-170 mu m with an accuracy of +/- 0.5 mu m. The lower limit of the range is set by the extinction loss S/N ratio, the upper limit is given by the laser beam cross-section, and the accuracy is imposed by the oscillations in the extinction efficiency factor. • Relation between broadening and Kramers-Kronig transformation of calculated optical spectra
  • 1999
  • In: OPTICS COMMUNICATIONS. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0030-4018. ; 167:1-6, s. 105-109
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • It is shown that, in practice, the Kramers-Kronig transformation and broadening of spectra do not commute. Therefore, broadening of calculated excitation spectra should be performed only on absorptive components. The two operations commute only in the spe
