  • Submillimetre observations of comets with Odin: 2001 2005
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633. ; 55:9, s. 1058-1068
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Odin satellite, launched in February 2001, is equipped with a 1.1-m submillimetre telescope. Odin was used to observe the 557 GHz line of water with high spectral resolution in 12 comets between 2001 and 2005. Line shapes and spatial mapping provide information on the anisotropy of the outgassing and constraints on water excitation, enabling accurate measurements of the water production rate. Five comets were regularly observed over periods of more than one month to monitor the variation of their water outgassing rate with heliocentric distance. Observing campaigns have been generally coordinated with ground-based observations of molecular lines at Nançay, CSO or IRAM 30-m telescopes to obtain molecular abundances relative to water. Thanks to Odin's frequency coverage, it was also possible to detect the H218O 548 GHz line, first in comet 153P/Ikeya Zhang in April 2002 [Lecacheux, A., Biver, N., Crovisier, J. et al., 2003, Observations of water in comets with Odin. Astron. Astrophys. 402, L55 L58.] and then in comets C/2002 T7 (LINEAR), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) and C/2004 Q2 (Machholz). The 16O/18O isotopic ratio (≈450) is consistent with the terrestrial value. Ammonia has been searched for in three comets through its J=1 0 line at 572 GHz and was tentatively detected in C/2001 Q4 and C/2002 T7. The derived abundances of NH3 relative to water are 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively, similar to values obtained in other comets with different techniques.

  • Influence of IMF draping direction and crustal magnetic field location on Martian ion beams
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 56:6, s. 861-867
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Data from the Ion Mass Analyzer (IMA) sensor of the ASPERA-3 instrument suite onboard Mars Express and data from the Magnetometer/Electron Reflectometer (MAG/ER) on Mars Global Surveyor have been analyzed to determine whether ion beam events (IBEs) are correlated with the direction of the draped interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) or the proximity of strong crustal magnetic fields to the subsolar point. We examined 150 IBEs and found that they are organized by IMF draping direction. However, no clear dependence on the subsolar longitude of the strongest magnetic anomaly is evident, making it uncertain whether crustal magnetic fields have an effect on the formation of the beams. We also examined data from the IMA sensor of the ASPERA-4 instrument suite on Venus Express and found that IBEs are observed at Venus as well, which indicates the morphology of the Martian and Venusian magnetotails are similar.

  • Mars Express and Venus Express multi-point observations of geoeffective solar flare events in December 2006
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 56, s. 873-880
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In December 2006, a single active region produced a series of proton solar flares, with X-ray class up to the X9.0 level, starting on 5December 2006 at 10:35 UT. A feature of this X9.0 flare is that associated MeV particles were observed at Venus and Mars by VenusExpress (VEX) and Mars Express (MEX), which were 801 and 1251 east of the flare site, respectively, in addition to the Earth, whichwas 791 west of the flare site. On December 5, 2006, the plasma instruments ASPERA-3 and ASPERA-4 on board MEX and VEXdetected a large enhancement in their respective background count levels. This is a typical signature of solar energetic particle (SEP)events, i.e., intensive MeV particle fluxes. The timings of these enhancements were consistent with the estimated field-aligned travel timeof particles associated with the X9.0 flare that followed the Parker spiral to reach Venus and Mars. • Observation of water vapor in the stratosphere of Jupiter with the Odin space telescope
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633. ; 56:12, s. 1573-1584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The water vapor line at 557 GHz has been observed with the Odin space telescope with a high signal-to-noise ratio and a high spectral resolution on November 8, 2002. The analysis of this observation as well as a re-analysis of previously published observations obtained with the submillimeter wavelength astronomy satellite seem to favor a cometary origin (Shoemaker-Levy 9) for water in the stratosphere of Jupiter, in agreement with the ISO observation results. Our model predicts that the water line should become fainter and broader from 2007. The observation of such a temporal variability would be contradictory with an IDP steady flux, thus supporting the SL9 source hypothesis. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd.

  • Simultaneous measurements of Martian plasma boundaries by Rosetta and Mars Express
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 57:8-9, s. 1085-1096
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the first two-spacecraft near-simultaneous observations of the Martian bow shock (BS), magnetic pileup boundary (MPB) and photo-electron boundary (PEB) obtained by the plasma instruments onboard Rosetta and Mars Express during the Rosetta Mars fly by on February 25, 2007. Our observations are compared with shape models for the BS and MPB derived from previous statistical studies. The MPB is found at its expected position but the BS for this event is found significantly closer to the planet than expected for the rather slow and moderately dense solar wind. Cross-calibration of the density measurements on the two spacecraft gives a density profile through the magnetosheath, indicating an increasing solar wind flux during the Rosetta passage which is consistent with the multiple BS crossings at the Rosetta exit.

  • The alkali metal atmospheres on the Moon and Mercury: Explaining the stable exospheres by heavy Rydberg Matter clusters
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633. ; 54:1, s. 101-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite recent progress in the modeling of alkali atmospheres like those around the Moon and Mercury, many problems still exist. It is proposed that Rydberg Matter (RM) clusters containing Na and K atoms are the main part of the alkali atmospheres of the Moon and Mercury, forming large clouds. RM clusters are studied in the laboratory with laser fragmentation and laser spectroscopy methods. Due to the very large collision cross sections of Rydberg atoms and RM clusters, the atmospheres are not collision free, as normally assumed based on the low densities of free alkali atoms. The non-escaping radial density variation for the Na atoms, observed, e.g., on the Moon, and the Maxwellian velocity distributions observed on Mercury are caused by a true atmosphere with collisional equilibration; this process is not possible in an exosphere. Fast alkali atoms are released from the RM clusters already at large heights by solar photons and charged particle impact. The kinetic temperatures derived for the atmospheres agree with the quantized energy release. The cluster model predicts that the rate of loss from the surface is much smaller than for a purely atomic model, since the transient storage is in the RM cluster form in the atmosphere and not at the surface. The conductance of the atmosphere is of the order of 100 S due to the facile collisional ionization of the RM clusters. The apparent depletion of K in the atmosphere of Mercury is explained. • Cassini Langmuir probe measurements in the inner magnetosphere of Saturn
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 57:1, s. 48-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the inner magnetosphere of Saturn, the plasma density and drift velocity are high enough, and the photoelectron current low enough, for a Langmuir probe to produce useful data on ion parameters. Plasma density and velocity are found by analyzing the current due to collected ions and emitted photoelectrons for a negative probe potential. In order to correctly analyze the data, the current caused by photoelectrons emitted from the probe must be known. For a spherical probe at negative bias this should be a constant current, but for Cassini's probe it varies with attitude. A likely cause of this is a leakage current from the stub to the probe. The plasma drift velocities derived from Langmuir probe measurements did not agree with those found by the Cassini plasma spectrometer in the inner magnetosphere, but did so elsewhere. A possible solution to this is a two-component plasma where the components have different drift velocities.

  • Five years of Ulysses dust data: 2000-2004
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-5088 .- 0032-0633. ; 54:9-10, s. 932-956
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Ulysses spacecraft has been orbiting the Sun on a highly inclined ellipse (i = 79 degrees, perihelion distance 1.3 AU, aphelion distance 5.4 AU) since it encountered Jupiter in 1992. Between January 2000 and December 2004, the spacecraft completed almost an entire revolution about the Sun, passing through perihelion in May 2001 and aphelion in July 2004. In this five-year period the dust detector on board recorded 4415 dust impacts. We publish and analyse the complete data set of both raw and reduced data for particles with masses 10(-16) g <= M <= 10(-7) g. Together with. 1695 dust impacts recorded between launch of Ulysses and the end of 1999 published earlier (Grain, E., Baguhl, M., Divine, N., Fechtig, H., Hamilton, D.P, Harmer, M.S., Kissel, J., Lindblad, B.A., Linkert, D., Linkert, G., Mann, L, McDonnell, J.A.M., Morfill, G.E., Polanskey, C., Riemann, R., Schwehm, G.H., Siddique, N., Staubach, P., Zook, H.A., 1995a. Four years of Ulysses dust data: 1996 to 1999. Planetary Space Sci. 49, 1303-1324, Paper VII), a data set of 6110 dust impacts detected with the Ulysses sensor between October 1990 and December 2004 is now available. The impact rate measured between 2000 and 2002 was relatively constant with about 0.3 impacts per day showing a maximum at 1.5 per day around ecliptic plane crossing in early-2001. The impact direction of the majority of impacts between 2000 and 2002 is compatible with particles of interstellar origin, the rest are most likely interplanetary particles. In 2003 and 2004 dust stream particles originating from the jovian system dominated the overall impact rate. Twenty-two individual dust streams were measured between November 2002 and December 2004. The observed impact rates are compared with models for interplanetary and interstellar dust. The dust measurements from the entire mission since Ulysses launch give good agreement with the interplanetary flux model of Staubach, P., Grun, E., Jehn, R., 1997. • Galileo dust data from the jovian system: 1997-1999
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-5088 .- 0032-0633. ; 54:9-10, s. 879-910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dust detector system on board the Galileo spacecraft recorded dust impacts in circumjovian space during the craft's orbital mission about Jupiter. This is the eighth in a series of papers dedicated to presenting Galileo and Ulysses dust data. We present data from the Galileo dust instrument for the period January 1997-December 1999 when the spacecraft completed 21 revolutions about Jupiter. In this time interval data were obtained as high resolution realtime science data or recorded data during 449 days (representing 41% of the entire period), or via memory readouts during the remaining times. Because the data transmission rate of the spacecraft was very low, the complete data set (i.e. all parameters measured by the instrument during impact of a dust particle) of only 3% (7625) of all particles detected could be transmitted to Earth; the other particles were only counted. Together with the data of 2883 particles detected during, Galileo's interplanetary cruise and 53 53 particles detected in the jovian system in 1996, complete data of 15 861 particles detected by the Galileo dust instrument from 1989 to 1999 are now available. The majority of the detected particles were tiny grains (about 10 nm in radius), most of them originating from Jupiter's innermost Galilean moon Io. They were detected throughout the jovian system and the highest impact rates exceeded 100 min(-1) (C21 orbit; 01 July 1999). With the new data set the times of onset, cessation and a 180 degrees shift in the impact direction of the grains measured during 19 Galileo orbits about Jupiter are well reproduced by simulated 9 nm particles charged up to a potential of +3 V, confirming earlier results obtained for only two Galileo orbits (Horanyi, M., Grun, E., Heck, A., 1997. Modeling the Galileo dust measurements at Jupiter. Geophys. Res. Lett. 24, 2175-2178). Galileo has detected a large number of bigger particles mostly in the region between the Galilean moons. The average radius of 370 of these grains measured in the 1996-1999 period is about 2 mu m (assuming spherical grains with density 1 g cm(-3)) and the size distribution rises steeply towards smaller grains. The biggest detected particles have a radius of about 10 mu m. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
