  • The materiality of discourses and the semiotics of materials : A social perspective on the meaning potentials of written texts and furniture
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 187:1-4, s. 141-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on two studies of different meaning-making phenomena, post-it notes and furniture, this paper highlights the role of materiality in everyday semiosis. A perspective on the semiotics of material artifacts is adopted, in which the “social” in combination with the specific affordances of materials are crucial for meaning-making. Partially in opposition to a Saussurean view of the semiotic sign, it is argued that materiality in itself contributes to meaning-making, through discourses and activity types. This paper contributes to the theoretical and the methodological dialogue between social semiotics and other approaches in the wider field of semiotic research.

  • Signs, Senses and Cognition: Lady Welby and Contemporary Semiotics
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 196, s. 185-195
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Susan Petrilli discusses Victoria Welby (1837–1912) and the Signific movement in her book Signifying and Understanding. The disposition of the book is chronological and thematic, and Petrilli’s discussion connects Welby’s work with contemporary semiotics, as well as with the intellectual and scientific landscape of Welby’s own time. For instance, a selection of Welby’s vast correspondence with intellectuals, researchers and philosophers important to linguistics, semiotics, psychology and anthropology, to mention a few of her interests mirrored in the exchange of letters, is included in the book. The review aims at further connecting Welby’s work to semiotic research of the day, where phenomenological and modern cognitive influences are important.

  • Photography and intermediality : Analytical perspectives on notions referred to by the term "photography"
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Mouton de Gruyter. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; :197, s. 153-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given the complex reality of media and mediation, it is reasonable to question the meaningfulness of treating photography as "one medium." This article suggests that it is necessary to distinguish between a number of complementary media aspects. It takes an intermedial perspective, based on the belief that one cannot understand photography without thoroughly comparing it to how other media are construed. First of all, photography can be understood in terms of media of production, storage, and distribution. This paper focuses primarily on the aspect of distribution and the critical meeting of the material, the sensorial, and the cognitive. It supports the view that photography, like all other media, should be analyzed in terms of what are referred to here as the four modalities of media. Minute investigation of the material, the sensorial, the spatiotemporal, and the semiotic features of media products that are understood to be photographs makes it possible to discern essential relations to other media. Finally, photography is discussed as qualified media. Media products cannot be fully understood without considering the historical and social processes that form our understanding of how they communicate and produce aesthetic import. At least two different types of qualification dominate our present culture: photography as documentation and photography as art.

  • Language as reflective experience
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - Berlin : de Gruyter. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 2010:182, s. 215-228
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article contains a concise presentation of a proposal for the explanation of the basic logical and conceptual structure of meaningful human experience as expressed in language. The core of the argument is that meaningful human experience is something that can only be derived from mutual interpersonal awareness. The article contains a proposal for a terminology for the conceptual details of the structure of inter-subjective experience and an attempt to base a command of natural language within this structure. The article ends with a discussion of the main thesis of the article as it relates to other recent approaches to the study of meaning in natural language.

  • The basic distinctions in Der Streit
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - Berlin, Germany : WALTER DE GRUYTER & CO. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 194, s. 137-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents Ingarden's views on what he calls "modes of being" ("ways of existence") and "existential moments"; the latter being constitutive parts of the former. Mainstream analytic philosophy has been dominated by the view that "existence" can mean only existence simpliciter. Ingarden, on the other hand, discerns four possible modes of being, one of which is of special interest to semiotics: purely intentional being. It is of relevance for the ontological understanding not only of texts, but also of pictures and other sign-related entities. At the end, an extrapolated Ingardenian semiotic triangle is presented.

  • The ideal as real and as purely intentional : Ingarden-based reflections
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - Berlin, Germany : WALTER DE GRUYTER & CO. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 194, s. 21-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper takes its departure from Ingarden's distinctions between four different main modes of being: absolute, extratemporal, real, and purely intentional. It introduces a distinction between two kinds of ideal entities: impurely ideal and purely ideal. Of the former kind are universals, and of the latter numbers; Ingarden regards both as existing in the extratemporal mode. It is then discussed whether Ingarden, and many others, has fallen prey to a mode illusion; and that, in fact, the impurely ideal entities exist in the real mode and the purely ideal in the purely intentional mode of being. The answers are weakly affirmative. On these presuppositions a concept of "mixed intentional object" is introduced. It seems to be of importance for how to understand numerical scales and the development of science.

  • Presence in the reading of literary narrative : A case for motor enactment
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 189:1-4, s. 23-48
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing on research in narrative theory and literary aesthetics, text and discourseprocessing, phenomenology and the experimental cognitive sciences, this paper outlines an embodied theory of presence (i.e., the reader’s sense ofhaving entered a tangible environment) in the reading of literary narrative.Contrary to common assumptions, it is argued that there is no straightforwardrelation between the degree of detail in spatial description on one hand, andthe vividness of spatial imagery and presence on the other. It is also arguedthat presence arises from a first-person, enactive process of sensorimotorsimulation/resonance, rather than from mere visualizing from the perspectiveof a passive, third-person observer. In sections 1 to 3, an inter-theoretical argumentis presented, proposing that presence may be effectively cued by explicit(or strongly implied) references to object-directed bodily movement. Insection 4, an attempt is made at explaining which ways of embedding suchreferences in the narrative may be particularly productive at eliciting presence.

  • Towards a social semiotics of rhythm in popular music
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 197, s. 119-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There have been attempts to describe rhythm in technical and musicological terms, yet it has remained one of the most elusive aspects of music for theorists as it is comprised of a range of interacting sounds. This article explores the contribution that could be made by a social semiotic approach to rhythm in popular music. The paper provides an inventory of sound qualities that can be seen as a set of meaning potentials for the creation of certain kinds of "groove" or "movement" in music, since these have different kinds of associations in terms of ideas, moods, and attitudes.

  • From sign to action : studies in chimpanzee pictorial competence. : Studies in chimpanzee pictorial competence
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 198, s. 205-240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many studies of children and apes realized in psychology address issues that are highly relevant to semiotics, but they often do so indirectly, or they use a terminology that is confusing and/or too vague from a semiotical point of view. The studies reported here, however, follow the paradigm of these psychological studies, but they are couched in an explicit semiotical terminology. They involve three classical semiotical issues: the nature of the sign, as opposed to other meanings; degrees and/or types of iconicity and their relevance for understanding; and the importance of temporal focus in different kinds of semiotical resources. The studies all involve one subject, the chimpanzee Alex, and all issues were studied looking at the actions accomplished by the subject after being exposed to different semiotic resources.

  • Semiosis and the elusive final interpretant of understanding
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 179:1-4, s. 145-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the conceptual history of the sign, as recounted by John Deely in Four ages of understanding, is immensely enlightening, history is never enough. If, before Augustine, it had occurred to no one that such diverse phenomena as are covered by this term had something in common, and if, in the time of Aquinas, Fonseca, and Poinsot, different usages of the term were in competition, the reason is not simply intellectual confusion, but rather that meaning is of many kinds. In this essay, I have shifted the terrain from socio-history to phylogeny and ontogeny, suggesting that, in the child, as well as in the human species, perception is the primary type of meaning, whereas true signs are acquired much later, followed by signs systems and organism-independent artifacts. The whole point of having a semiotic theory, it is argued, is to be able to account for the differences, and not only the similarities, of different kinds of meaning.
