  • Semiosis is cognitive niche construction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - Berlin : Walter de Gruyter. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 2019:228, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we describe Peircean post-1903 semiosis as a processualist conception of meaning, and relate it to contemporary active externalism in Philosophy of Cognitive Science, especially through the notion of cognitive niche construction. In particular, we shall consider the possibility of integrating (a) the understanding of “semiosis as process” within Peirce’s mature semiotics with (b) an elaboration of the concept of cognitive niche from the point of view of niche construction theory and process biology research.

  • Towards a semiotic definition of discourse and a basis for a typology of discourses
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 208, s. 177-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article engages with the widely used academic concept of discourse. The aim is threefold: first, to provide a comprehensive overview of how the notion of discourse is conceived based on (a) definitions in the academic literature, (b) dictionary definitions, and (c) corpus data; second, to define discourse as a set of related representations; and, third, to suggest a basis for a typology of discourses. Following Peirce, a representation is regarded as a relationship between a signifier, signified element, and interpretant. A basis for a typology is developed by considering various types of representations and ways they are related.

  • Diagrams and mental figuration: A semio-cognitive analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; :229, s. 253-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We all intuitively know what a diagram is, and still it is surprisingly difficult to describe it as a semiotic function or type. In this article, we present four groups of hypotheses in view of a clarification. We hypothesize: (1) That diagrams are signs of a distinct type, unknown to classical semiotics; (2) That the elementary graphs of a diagram are all derived from lines and points in topological mental spaces. The mind applies these diagrammatic spaces to referential spaces in many ways, but basically through conceptual integration (blending). The mind blends topology and reference, which makes the topology unnoticeable; (3) That elementary diagrammatic graphs constitute a natural, phenomenological, spatiotemporal, figurative and dynamic but informal geometry in the embodied, thinking mind; (4) That diagrammatic signs are the active components of the abstract mental figuration in working memory that accompany perception and deliver the schematizing ideas which invest and connect our categories and construe proper descriptive, narrative, patterns of inferential thought and programs of sensorimotor and social action.

  • A medium-centered model of communication
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; :224, s. 269-293
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to form a new communication model, which is centered on the intermediate stage of communication, here called medium. The model is intended to be irreducible, to highlight the essential communication entities and their interrelations, and potentially to cover all conceivable kinds of communication of meaning. It is designed to clearly account for both verbal and nonverbal meaning, the different roles played by minds and bodies in communication, and the relation between presemiotic and semiotic media features. As a result, the model also pinpoints fundamental obstacles for communication located in media products themselves, and demonstrates how Shannon's model of transmission of computable data can be incorporated in a model of human communication of meaning.

  • Coherence and truthfulness in communication : Intracommunicational and extracommunicational indexicality
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; :225, s. 423-446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to construct a model that demonstrates how human communication, involving all kinds of media, may not only correspond to but also put us in contact with what we perceive to be the surrounding world. In which ways is truthfulness actually established by communication ? To answer this, the notion of indices is employed: signs based on contiguity. However, an investigation of indices' outward direction - creating truthfulness in communication - also requires an understanding of their inward direction: establishing coherence. To investigate these two functions, further concepts and various elementary categorizations are proposed: it is argued that there are several types of contiguity and many varieties of indexical objects, which invalidates the coarse fiction-nonfiction distinction.

  • The hidden meanings in the case law of the European Court for Human Rights
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 209, s. 209-230
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In my paper, I will study the case law of the European Court of Human Rights by using discourse analysis as a method. My hypothesis is that the court has changed its line concerning the right to a fair trial (in article 6 of the European Convention for Human Rights) over the last twenty years. Earlier, it always defended the rights of the accused and the authorities' problems, for instance, in fact gathering, were recessive. The same covered the rights of the witnesses even if the court usually confessed that also the witness has their rights, which should be respected. It also stressed that authorities of course have difficulties with proof - for example - the offences that are connected with the organized crime. Still, the rights of defense were always number one and inviolate. During recent years, the line seems to have changed even if the court has not transparently said so. However, it has given some new precedents by the Grand Chamber where the rights of the defense have been limited more than before; for instance, the cases Jalloh v. Germany (11 July 2006), Gafgen v. Germany (1 June 2010), and Al-Khawaja and Tahery v. Great Britain (15 December 2011). The expressions used in case law show that the way of thinking has changed as well. Still, the changes are sometimes more hidden than transparent where discourse analysis is the only tool for catching the changes and showing differences in the thinking of the court.

  • New approaches to plastic language : Prolegomena to a computer-aided approach to pictorial semiotics
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; :230, s. 71-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we summarize observations bridging the declared aspirations of pictorial semiotics and its real achievements. Pictorial semiotics is here understood as the general study of pictures as signs and it constituted a fundamental step beyond the art historical captivation with individual images. In the first part of our contribution we present a review of the most important methods that have been proposed as an answer to deal with several pictorial problems (multiple instances, segmentation, non-figurative meaning). In the second part, we offer some positive and on-going implementations designed to remedy the shortcomings observed. What is suggested is the proof of concept that human researchers need the assistance of computing methodologies. However, computers can only do their job once an adequate phenomenology of human experience is fed into the process.

  • Elements of Peircean phenomenology : From categories to signs by way of grounds
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 2019:228, s. 259-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is curious facts that Peirce scholars tends to take the three Peircean categories for granted, whereas Peirce himself claimed they must be derived by means of phenomenology, later rebaptized phaneroscopy. As I have suggested elsewhere, this is the essential difference between Peircean and Husserlean phenomenology, which are in other respects identical, whether or not there is a historical connection. I have tried to show that the meanings of the three categories, so differently epitomized in Peirce's numerous writings, can (more or less) be reduced to common denominators. Quite independently of this, I suggested in some earlier work that, by taking our point of departure in Peirce's notion of "ground" as being that which differentiates the different kinds of signs, we can account for iconicity, indexicality, and symbolicity, quite apart from their embodiment in signs. The task of the present paper is to investigate to what extent this two threesomes can be related to each other.

  • Greimasean phenomenology and beyond : From isotopy to time consciousness
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 2017:219, s. 93-113
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In spite of appearances, the true encounter between Husserlean phenomenology and Parisian school semiotics still has not occurred. In this paper, I suggest that, by adopting ideas from phenomenology, many of which have received new currency in contemporary cognitive science, we can retain a basic formality of the theory, without yielding to any reductionist tendency. After a brief look at the hidden phenomenology of Hjelmslev's work, which was a fundamental inspiration to Greimas, I delve deeper into the Greimasean notion of isotopy to the point where it can be seen to have a counterpart in the notion of schema, which has a long history in psychology and phenomenology, before its brief hour of fame in cognitive science. The fundamental advantage of the notion of schema, as against that of isotopy, is that the former is structured, while the latter is not; and, in particular, that the former is temporally structured, which means that it also can be differently organized. This leads us on to the suggestion that the schema, as the successor term to isotopy, has an existence not only in the everyday life of any human being, but also in the evolutionary history of the human species.

  • Revisiting dynamic space in film from a semiotic perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Semiotica. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0037-1998 .- 1613-3692. ; 2016, s. 129-149
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper revisits a particular area of concern in computer generated (CG) visual effects, namely, the problem of the space in dynamic, multiple panels created by digital processes. The paper critiques recent statements made on narrative understanding, positing equivalences between a viewer's navigation across dynamic frames in CG images and human-computer interactions, as well as claims of narrative complexity in films using dynamic frames. This paper will argue that it is necessary to approach the meaning construction of cinematic space by distinguishing analytical levels of materiality from their discursive meaning, because the visual effect created by the manipulation of a dynamic spatial layout does not necessarily burden the viewer's linear path for constructing coherent spatial meaning.
