    • This article is the author's trial lecture for appointment as Reader in practical theology, held on 3 November 2016. The article is based on the author's own research and practical work with funerals for more than thirty years, but also on secondary research. The article shows the interplay between micro rituals, interpretations of faith, and interpretations of life. The article briefly discusses how micro rituals are established and investigates lines of influence between culture and religion. Furthermore, the article says something about how practical-theological research can contribute to the Church's self-reflection. When people participate in a macro ritual, e.g. a funeral service, and within the framework of this ritual create and conduct their own micro rituals, there is a correlation between the interpretations of the macro and micro rituals that can lead to certain life interpretations among those who participate. The article discusses how people use the funeral ritual to interpret their lives. The official ritual, the macro ritual, is used to perform micro rituals, i.e. private or personal rituals. Such micro rituals may, for example, be used in the framework of the funeral service by placing candles in the candle holder, decorating and putting items beside and on the coffin, as well as closing and locking the coffin. These micro rituals often have the dual function of personalizing the dead as well as helping friends and relatives in their mourning process.

  • Bildning och reformationen
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Svensk Teologisk Kvartalskrift. - 0039-6761. ; 93:1-2, s. 19-31
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term Bildung did not exist in the Reformation era. Rather, one spoke of "the Learned World." Coming up in the Renaissance, the Reformation was influenced by humanism and its prominent figures Johann Reuchlin and Erasmus of Rotterdam and their interest in the classical heritage with Latin as the scholarly lingua franca. Both Luther and Melanchthon attached themselves directly to that tradition and Luther also included the music, both vocally and instrumentally. Schools and universities became important tools for implementing education and higher learning. The Reformers inherited the classical scholarly ideals from the Platonic Academy, the learned schools, the Arabic/ Muslim tradition of science, and the new universities from the twelfth century onward. Even if the sons of Gustav I received solid scholarly training, education was not a prominent feature of the Swedish Reformation. Schools had a decreasing number of pupils and teaching at Uppsala University was discontinued around 1530 and was not taken up again until 1595 after a num ber of unsuccessful attempts. In Denmark, however, the Reformation was tied to educational progress. The Reformation was not innovative with regard to the idea of what learning and education implied. It was built on the scholarly ideals of the Renaissance with its demands of extensive and broad knowledge within different fields, openness for change and progress, and willingness to discuss and respect other people's views and opinions.

  • Lutherforskningens koppling till luthersk tro : En kritisk utvärdering av ett forskningsprojekt
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Svensk teologisk kvartalskrift. - : Gleerup. - 0039-6761. ; 93:1-2, s. 95-108
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article evaluates a research project on Lutheran theology and ethics in a post-Christian society supervised by professor emeritus Carl-Henric Grenholm, Uppsala University. The project has resulted in six books and the topics of the books are: (1) original sin, (2) spiritual training, (3) political aspects of Christian ethics, (4) human bodies, pleasure and passion, (5) vocation, and (6) law and sin in nineteenth-century revival movements. As a whole, the project puts focus on twentieth-century theology and gives only little attention to what Luther has actually written. Even less attention is paid to other early Lutheran writers. Present-day Christian globalism and ecumenism are not noted at all in the books of the project. Future Lutheran scholarship can learn a lot from the failures of this project. It is important to treat the sources from the sixteenth century carefully and contextualize them in order to translate them into present time. It also seems increasingly necessary to clarify previous research traditions on the topics that present-day scholars write about. As a last insight we can see that Luther scholars, instead of locking the early Lutheran sources into modernist categories, need to reevaluate the diverse Lutheran tradition from which they form their own theological agenda, thereby clarifying how they interpret the Biblical and ancient church traditions on the topic in dialogue with the Lutheran doctrinal formulations from the sixteenth century.

  • Några beröringspunkter mellan kontemplation och döden : inspirerat av Catharina Stenqvists författarskap
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Svensk Teologisk Kvartalskrift. - 0039-6761. ; 92:1, s. 2-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Catharina Stenqvist, former professor in philosophy of religion at Lund University, alludes that there are similarities between death and contemplation. In this article I suggest three possible such similarities, what they may consist in, how they may be given grounds, and examples of how further research may be carried out. The three suggested points of similarity are 1) experiential similarities, 2) physiological similarities, and 3) functional similarities. The experiential similarities consist mainly in the experience of both death and contemplation being pre-linguistic, not possible to put into words. Empirical research and philosophical argument may provide grounds, and a possible route for further research would be to investigate how the incorporation of the Christian hope of resurrection would affect the issue. The suggested physiological similarities consist in the aforementioned experiential similarities also being reflected in the neurophysiological states of the brain during contemplation and death. Empirical research may also here provide grounds, but are to date too scanty to be valid. A question for further research could be to investigate the philosophical and/or theological implications of such a link, should it become properly established. The functional similarities consist in death and contemplation being mutually used as a therapeutic aid for understanding the other, and both being used as means to reflect on our own death and present life. The grounds are established practices and their effectiveness. Further research may want to compare the therapeutic role of ‘death’ in existential philosophy and in Christian contemplation.
