  • Phylogeny of Anisopappus with species circumscriptions revisited (Asteraceae: Athroismeae)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Taxon. - : Wiley. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175. ; 70:2, s. 351-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anisopappus (Asteraceae: Athroismeae) is a genus with its main distribution in Africa (one species also in Asia), currently considered to include around 21 species. A molecular phylogenetic study of Anisopappus is presented for the first time, based on plastid (ndhF, trnL-trnF, trnQ-rps16) and nuclear (ETS, ITS) data. Anisopappus is confirmed to be monophyletic, and species interrelationships are resolved. The results differ from earlier treatments based on morphology, and the phylogenetic analyses reveal a need for changes in species circumscriptions as compared to those of the most recent treatment. Consequently, many taxa currently treated as synonyms are here shown to represent separate species indicating that the genus includes well over 40 species. Distribution patterns now emerge where several clades are found to consist of species restricted to a particular geographical region. The Anisopappus of Madagascar, many of which were earlier placed in synonymy with species found on the African continent, are here shown to be endemic, and the results reveal a need for further studies of that group.

  • Phylogeny and re-circumscription of Cheniella (Leguminosae: Cercidoideae) based on plastome data and morphology, with description of three new species
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: TAXON. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175. ; 73:2, s. 475-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Subfamily Cercidoideae is an early-diverging lineage of Leguminosae, within which the number and classification of genera have been controversial. Cheniella is a recently described genus in the Cercidoideae which requires revision and testing of its monophyly and circumscription. Here we infer the phylogenetic position and infrageneric relationships of Cheniella as well as the intergeneric relationships of Cercidoideae using 48 newly sequenced plastid genomes, including 34 individuals representing all species of Cheniella. Our phylogenetic analyses yield a well-resolved tree of Cercidoideae with robust support at most nodes. We also present morphological studies through field work and herbarium studies to re-assess the classification and circumscription of the genus. Based on the results of molecular analyses and morphological studies combined with distribution data, we broaden the circumscription of Cheniella to comprise a total of 15 species and 3 subspecies, including three new species (C. hechiensis, C. longistaminea, C. pubicarpa), one new combination (C. tianlinensis) and one new status and combination (C. longipes).

  • A new taxonomic backbone for the infrageneric classification of the species-rich genus Silene(Caryophyllaceae)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Taxon. - : Wiley. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175. ; 69:2, s. 337-368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The systematization of species in plant taxonomy based on the phylogenetic relationships among them are of utmost importance and also very challenging in large genera. In those, phylogenetic results often may suggest substantially different relationships than previous classifications, and call for large-scale taxonomic revisions. Delimitation of the genusSilenehas been and is still somewhat controversial, and recent molecular phylogenetic studies have settled several monophyletic groups that differ substantially from previous taxonomies. The infrageneric taxonomy ofSilenes.str. has not been updated as a whole taking the phylogenetic information into account. In this study, we review previous phylogenetic results based on multiple loci, and conducted comprehensive gene tree analyses based on the nrDNA ITS and cpDNArps16regions for 1586 and 944 samples representing 415 and 397 species, respectively, includingSileneand its allies, as well as a species tree analysis including 262 samples representing 243 species. We sampled representatives from all 44 sections recognized in the most recent global revision of the genus. The results support the recognition of three subgenera, i.e.,S.subg.Behenantha,S.subg.LychnisandS. subg.Silene, which is partly in agreement with previous molecular phylogenetic findings and contradicts all previous traditional classifications.Silenesect.Atocion, with a few annual species showing a narrow distribution range in the eastern Mediterranean, is treated as incertae sedis because of its uncertain phylogenetic position, possibly due to exceptionally high substitution rates.Silenesubg.Lychnis, weakly supported as sister to the other subgenera, splits into three main clades and includes four sections.Silenesubg.Behenantha, which forms a possible sister group in relation toS.subg.Silene, is poorly resolved basally and includes a large number of mostly small clades recognized as 18 sections. InS.subg.Silene, 11 sections are recognized, among which four are broadly circumscribed:S.sect.Auriculatae,S.sect.Sclerocalycinae,S.sect.SileneandS.sect.Siphonomorpha.Silenesect.AcutifoliaeandS.sect.Portensesare described here as new taxa, whereas new status or new combinations are proposed forS.sect.Anotites,S.sect.Muscipula,S.sect.Petrocoma,S.sect.Pulvinatae,S.sect.SclerophyllaeandS.sect.Uebelinia. Five new combinations and two new names are proposed for taxa inSileneformerly assigned toLychnisandUebelinia. The correct infrageneric nomenclature compatible with the new infrageneric system is provided along with synonymy and type citations. Shortcomings of this study, such as the lack of a morphological diagnostic key and sparse sampling of some large sections, are listed and discussed.

  • 193 and 246 of Philosophia botanica do not support that Linnaeus was a "typologist"
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Taxon. - : WILEY. - 0040-0262 .- 1996-8175. ; 69:2, s. 213-216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • 193 and 246 of Linnaeus's Philosophia botanica have recently been invoked to suggest that Linnaeus used, or even introduced, the "Method of Type", which implies that a genus is centred around a "typical" species. However, there is no support for this conclusion in either of the two paragraphs, rather the opposite. A recapitulation of the last twenty years' reassessment of Linnaeus's taxonomic philosophy is given.
