  • Probabilistic Forecasts Using Expert Judgment : The Road to Recovery From COVID-19
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 62:1, s. 233-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on many industries around the world including tourism and policy makers are interested in mapping out what the recovery path will look like. We propose a novel statistical methodology for generating scenario-based probabilistic forecasts based on a large survey of 443 tourism experts and stakeholders. The scenarios map out pessimistic, most-likely and optimistic paths to recovery. Taking advantage of the natural aggregation structure of tourism data due to geographic locations and purposes of travel, we propose combining forecast reconciliation and forecast combinations implemented to historical data to generate robust COVID-free counterfactual forecasts, to contrast against. Our empirical application focuses on Australia, analyzing international arrivals and domestic flows. Both sectors have been severely affected by travel restrictions in the form of international and interstate border closures and regional lockdowns. The two sets of forecasts, allow policy makers to map out the road to recovery and also estimate the expected effect of the pandemic.

  • The Rich Kids of Instagram : Luxury Travel, Transport Modes, and Desire
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 61:7, s. 1479-1494
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Rich Kids of Instagram (RKOI) portray luxury lifestyles on social media. The potential roles of travel and transport within these online displays of affluence have not yet been examined. This paper's purpose is to analyse how transport modes and luxury travel are depicted and interrelated through RKOI images. Co-occurrence analyses were conducted using a data set of Instagram posts with RKOI as a hashtag (2012-2018) to visualize the roles of transport modes and luxury travel in RKOI image construction. The findings demonstrate that both energy-intensive transport modes and luxury travel, whether through air/watercraft or luxury cars, play a vital role in signaling RKOI's self-image on Instagram, with gendered differences. The article contributes an original conceptual model of how RKOI construct their image using transport modes and luxury travel. Implications for the social normalization of carbon-intensive transport choices, coupled with luxury destinations as a backdrop, are discussed.

  • Reconceptualizing Tourists’ Extraordinary Experiences
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 62:2, s. 399-411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research that conceptualizes tourist extraordinary experiences both from the structural and anti-structural perspective is limited in the tourism literature. The purpose of this research is to develop a new theoretical perspective that re-conceptualizes our understanding of tourists’ extraordinary experience by taking into consideration both the structural and anti-structural elements of an experience. It draws on phenomenological interviews with 26 food tourists. The study finds that extraordinary experience consists of elements such as profaneness, collaborative interactions and conflict-easing, which represent both the structural and anti-structural elements. The findings of this study allow us to question whether extraordinary experience is purely structural or anti-structural as suggested by previous research. Rather, based on the findings, we argue that extraordinary experience is the positive co-existence of both the ordinary and the non-ordinary. As a result, we use the term “synstructure” to conceptualize the tourist extraordinary experience.

  • Reconfiguring Aviation for a Climate-Safe Future : Are Airlines Sending the Wrong Message?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 61:6, s. 1458-1473
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aviation remains a problematic sector of the global economy in times of climate emergency. Grounded in the ideology of reconfiguration, we adopt a system transitions perspective to address high emissions leisure travel. Our focus falls on the marketing communications of airlines as a critical component in the prevailing sociotechnical regime. Thematic analysis of the e-mail marketing communications of selected airlines revealed three prominent tropes: adventure and discovery; privilege; and urgency. These communications bring air travel into the everyday lives of consumers and accelerate the turnover time of tourist consumption. Time is mobilized to create a sense of resource scarcity and urgency to consume, paradoxically in a situation characterized by oversupply. The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a unique opportunity for structural reform of the airline industry. Component substitution to address airline marketing is required as an important step toward overcoming consumer moral disengagement and reconfiguring the airline industry.

  • Improving Tourist Arrival Prediction : A Big Data and Artificial Neural Network Approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 60:5, s. 998-1017
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Because of high fluctuations of tourism demand, accurate predictions of tourist arrivals are of high importance for tourism organizations. The study at hand presents an approach to enhance autoregressive prediction models by including travelers’ web search traffic as external input attribute for tourist arrival prediction. The study proposes a novel method to identify relevant search terms and to aggregate them into a compound web-search index, used as additional input of an autoregressive prediction approach. As methods to predict tourism arrivals, the study compares autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models with the machine learning–based technique artificial neural network (ANN). Study results show that (1) Google Trends data, mirroring traveler’s online search behavior (i.e., big data information source), significantly increase the performance of tourist arrival prediction compared to autoregressive approaches using past arrivals alone, and (2) the machine learning technique ANN has the capacity to outperform ARIMA models.

  • Effects of Value-Belief-Norm Theory, ESG, and AI on Space Tourist Behavior for Sustainability With Three Types of Space Tourism
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 63:6, s. 1395-1410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since reusable launch vehicles have revolutionized access to space, space tourism has received enormous policy and research attention. However, such growth is occurring within a wider context of concerns over climate change, emissions, and space debris. Although the space industries have enormous environmental impacts, few studies have been undertaken on the sustainability of space tourism. Therefore, we aim to create and assess an extended value-beliefs-norms theory with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, trust in artificial intelligence (AI), and the benefits of AI, in comparing three types of space tourism (Earth, suborbital, and orbital). To achieve the goals, multi-method analyses of 1,000 respondents were applied, including partial least squares-structural equation modeling, multi-group analysis, fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis, and deep learning. Results revealed that the extended value-belief-norm model well explains space tourist behavior, ESG also has significant roles on the research model, and the three types have unique characteristics.

  • Traveler Biosecurity Behavior during the COVID-19 Pandemic : Effects of Intervention, Resilience, and Sustainable Development Goals
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 61:7, s. 1599-1618
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Even prior to COVID-19, biosecurity was a significant issue for tourism, especially at national borders. Since personal nonpharmaceutical interventions can be effective for an individual's health and psychological resilience during a pandemic, understanding tourists' biosecurity behavior is essential given the broader relationship with traveling during COVID-19. However, existing research has not explicitly examined this relationship during any pandemic, nor has it explored potential long-term implications. To fill this gap, this study built and tested a theoretically comprehensive framework including prosocial behavior, ethics, perception, intervention, resilience, biosecurity behavior, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) due to COVID-19. Results reveal that prosocial behavior and perception have significant impacts on intervention, which influences resilience and biosecurity behavior. Resilience has an effect on biosecurity behavior. Three SDG groups have different effects on the relationship between intervention and biosecurity behavior. Deep learning sheds light on tourist's biosecurity practices during COVID-19 and when international travel resumes.

  • What Makes Tourists Use Public Transport? : Value-Belief-Norm Theory, Environmental, Social, and Governance Factors, and the Sustainable Development Goals
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 63:6, s. 1426-1441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fifty percent of emissions must be cut by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050 to keep global warming below 1.5 & DEG;C. Transport is a major component of tourism's contribution to climate change. Therefore, encouraging tourists to use less energy intensive public transport is an important strategy in reducing tourism emissions. Despite the crucial role of public transport for sustainable tourism, the area remains substantially under researched and theoretically uninformed. To fill the research gap, an extended-value-belief-norm (EVBN) model was created and assessed, including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, air quality, and climate change, and comparing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) groups of fair distribution, efficient allocation, and sustainable scale. Results revealed that an EVBN model well explains tourist behavior for public transport, showing the significant distinct effect of ESG components and SDG groups in the research model, and providing theoretical and managerial insights with respect to tourist use of public transport.

  • Popular Culture Tourism : Conceptual Foundations and State of Play
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 62:7, s. 1391-1410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Popular culture tourism encompasses a range of expressive practices that attract fans traveling to destinations associated with their fandom pursuit. However, scholarship on this multifaceted phenomenon is today over-fragmented and obscured by separate disciplinary agendas and priorities. We argue that the scope and breadth of popular culture tourism calls for its interdisciplinary treatment as a distinct field. Through a scoping literature review, this paper identifies the foundational elements of its conceptual and ontological roots, extracting key insights and discursive themes that can help establish a comprehensive perspective on the study and management of popular culture tourism. Our inquiry builds common ground that can shed light on the complexity of popular culture expressions and enable their strategic role as a destination placemaking tool. Thematic areas of convergence resulting in the emergent configuration of the field are delineated, and primary research questions for the comprehensive study of popular culture tourism are outlined.

  • Two Tales of One City : Fantasy Proneness, Authenticity, and Loyalty of On-Screen Tourism Destinations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Travel Research. - : Sage Publications. - 0047-2875 .- 1552-6763. ; 60:8, s. 1802-1820
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On-screen tourism destinations provide tourists with a mixture of reality and mass-media experience. This study builds a conceptual framework of authenticity evaluating the relationship between fantasy proneness, authenticity, and destination loyalty. It is among the first to compare perceived authenticity of dual images of a destination, both the film location and the story’s setting. Using Game of Thrones and the city of Dubrovnik as a case, it applies a mixed method of interviews followed by a main survey with both closed- and open-ended questions. The primary findings show that the relationship between authenticity of the film location (Dubrovnik) and loyalty is positive, but such relationship is insignificant for the authenticity of the story’s setting (King’s Landing). This investigation enriches our understanding of the complex assessments of authenticity and expands the theory of imagination by evaluating the effects of fantasy proneness on perceived authenticity in the context of on-screen tourism.
