    • This paper demonstrates an automated testbed suitable for beyond-5G distributed MIMO experiments, where bandwidth, number of transmitters and precoding methods are flexible and configured through a central unit. This is based on an all-digital radio-over-fiber approach to communication through 12 fully coherent, low-complexity remote radio transmitters. An automated robot receiver is implemented to facilitate efficient communication data collection in realistic environments. Using the proposed system, co-located and distributed MIMO communication antenna configurations are compared in a real in-door environment. The results show that distributed MIMO provides more significantly more uniform power distribution and better overall MIMO capacity compared to co-located MIMO.

    • A technique to design a broadband two-stage frequency tripler is proposed. The 1 st and the 2 nd harmonics obtained from the first stage are mixed in the second stage, getting the 3 rd harmonic. Between the two stages, there is a two-pole filter which lets the amplitude of the 1 st harmonic increase and the amplitude of the 2 nd harmonic decrease when the frequency increases. Consequently, a large 1 st harmonic is always mixed with a small 2 nd harmonic, and vice versa, which equalizes the amplitude of the mixing product, i.e., the 3 rd harmonic, over a large bandwidth. Together with a frequency doubler and a buffer amplifier, this frequency tripler is used in a frequency sixtupler. A proof-of-concept circuit is designed and implemented in 250 nm indium phosphide (InP) double-heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) technology. For an input power of 6.3 dBm, the sixtupler has an output power between 0 dBm to 4.6 dBm in the output frequency range from 135 GHz to 183 GHz. It exhibits up to 13 dBc rejection ratio of the undesired 4 th , 5 th , and 7th harmonics. The sixtupler consumes a dc power of 100 mW, and achieves a peak power efficiency of 2.5%.

    • This paper reports on ultra-low power 4-8 GHz (C-band) InP high-electron mobility transistor (HEMT) cryogenic low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) aimed for qubit amplification in quantum computing. We have investigated dc power dissipation in hybrid three-stage cryogenic LNAs using 100-nm gate length InP HEMTs with different indium content in the channel (65% and 80%). The noise performance at 300 K was found to be comparable for both channel structures. At 5 K, an LNA with 65% indium channel exhibited significantly lower noise temperature at any dc power dissipation compared to the LNA with 80% indium channel. The LNA with 65% indium channel achieved an average noise of 3.2 K with 23 dB gain at an ultra-low power consumption of 300 mu W. To the best of authors' knowledge, the LNA exhibited the lowest noise temperature to date for sub-milliwatt power cryogenic C-band LNAs.

    • An electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure is implemented on a printed-circuit board (PCB) as gasket between waveguide flanges. The proposed gasket can reduce leakage between waveguide flanges due to misalignment. A WR-6.5 waveguide proof-of-concept demonstration is presented in this paper covering 110 - 170 GHz with a return loss lower than 12 dB and over a 75 um of air gap between the flanges.

    • This paper reports on a real-time radio-link at W-band (92-114 GHz). 10 Gbps peak rate is reached for a 2000 MHz carrier bandwidth, and 5.7 Gbps is demonstrated over a link-hop of 1.5 km for a 1500 MHz-carrier, running at 128 QAM and 32 QAM, respectively. High integrated radio front-end SIP modules using GaAs technology, achieves a linear TX channel power of +8 dBm, and RX NF of 8 dB from the radio. It is configured to achieve 5.7 Gbps in a radio link with 149 dB system gain.

    • A 64 element phased array is implemented using an all metal Vivaldi aperture and 16 commercial beamforming ICs integrated on a 10-layer RF -PCB. The interconnects within the PCB are designed using circular barrels to avoid unwanted resonances, as is demonstrated by full wave simulation. The use of a non-isolated power combiner in receive mode is validated by comparing two far-field calibration techniques, resulting in measured high-fidelity beams steering up to 50°.

    • In this work a high data rate transmitter and receiver link is presented using a 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS process. The communication link has demonstrated transmissions up to 40 Gbps QAM-16 at D-band (110-170 GHz) over a one meter polymer microwave fiber (PMF). The peak output power of the transmitter (Tx) is 3 dBm at 135 GHz and the 3-dB bandwidth of both Tx and receiver (Rx) is between 115 - 145 GHz, resulting in a 30 GHz bandwidth. Total chip area for Tx and Rx combined, including pads, is 4.2 mm2.

    • In this work a D-band (110 GHz - 170 GHz) polymer microwave fiber (PMF) link for high data rate communication is presented. The transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) circuits are designed and fabricated in a commercial 130 nm silicon germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS process. The Tx has a peak output power of 5 dBm. The link has been tested over a 2 meter long PMF, demonstrating 80 Gbps using QAM-16 modulation, with a bit error rate (BER) of 8*10 −4 , and 48 Gbps using QPSK with a BER < 10 −12 . For a 4 meter long PMF, 24 Gbps using QPSK was demonstrated with a BER =7.7*10 −6.

    • Massive multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) systems request wideband power amplifiers (PA) for multi-band signal transmission. In this paper, we present different digital predistortion (DPD) techniques to linearize wideband PA with multi-band stimulus. We firstly propose a general form for pruned multi-band DPD models with low complexity. A study on the implementation complexities of different linearization methods is then analyzed. This paper provides a critical view on the metric of implementation complexity in function of the DPD model complexity and the sampling frequency of the signal processing. We finally propose a sampling frequency threshold to determine the best DPD solution according to the measurement results.

  • Circulator Load Modulated Amplifier: A Non-Reciprocal Wideband and Efficient PA Architecture

    • A novel power amplifier (PA) architecure, the Circulator Load Modulated Amplifier (CLMA), is presented and demonstrated. Based on a 3-port non-reciprocal combiner, the CLMA is able to modulate the load of a class-B amplifier by means of controlling the amplitude and phase of a class-C amplifier. The architecture enables broadband highly-efficient operation over a reconfigurable output power control range. As a proof of concept, a narrowband prototype PA based on GaN transistors and a commercial circulator is employed to validate the CLMA concept. It exhibits peak output power of 43.1 dBm and drain efficiency of 73% at 6-dB output power control range at a center frequency of 2.09 GHz.
