  • Monitoring persons’ rights to equal care : registered nurses’ experiences of caring for people with mental ill-health and somatic comorbidity in psychiatric outpatient care
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Persons with severe mental ill-health die early from preventable physical ill-health. Registered nurses in psychiatric outpatient care play a key role in improving persons’ physical health, and it is important to examine how they view their responsibility, their experiences of care, and the obstacles they meet in providing person-centred care. The purpose of this study was to explore registered nurses’ experiences of caring for persons with mental ill-health and somatic comorbidity in psychiatric outpatient care, using qualitative content analysis to analyze data from semi-structured interviews. The results show that these nurses monitored the person’s right to equal care, embraced the whole of the persons suffering, and dealt with unclear boundaries in care. This highlights the unique role that registered nurses play in psychiatric outpatient care via their ability to interpret symptoms and find ways to adapt care based on persons’ needs. Registered nurses consider physical health in all care and provide a link between psychiatric and somatic care. Together with mental health nurses at primary health care centers, they are key in reducing persons’ suffering. There is a need for structural and functional changes in line with person-centred care including collaboration both within and outside healthcare organizations.

  • Brief Admission for Patients with Self-Harm from the Perspective of Outpatient Healthcare Professionals
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673. ; 43:4, s. 356-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to describe the role of brief-admission (BA) in treating high-risk patients with self-harm from the perspective of outpatient healthcare staff in Sweden. Ten outpatient healthcare professionals from three psychiatric clinics were interviewed. Data were analyzed using a conventional content analysis. The findings of this study help support the role of BA as an acute crisis management intervention, and describe how BA serves as a useful adjunct to outpatient treatment, especially for patients with complementarily psychotherapeutic interventions. The findings also suggest that implementing BA may increase treatment opportunities for outpatient staff and strengthen the concept of person-centered care.

  • Selfcare Strategies Shown to Be Useful in Daily Life for Adults Diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – A Systematic Review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673. ; 44:9, s. 825-833
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Adults with ADHD experience a wide range of difficulties in daily life, and RNs and other healthcare professionals need to know how to support them. The aim was to conduct a systematic review of which selfcare strategies adults with ADHD use and need in order to manage daily life. A literature review based on the PRISMA model was performed, and seven articles with a qualitative design were found. Data were analyzed with thematic analysis. The analysis generated one major theme Enabling ways to manage the consequences of disability in daily life based on three subthemes; Establishing ways of acting to help yourself, Finding encouraging and helping relationships, and Using external aids for managing daily life. Professionals may benefit from knowing about these selfcare strategies when meeting people with ADHD.

  • The Importance of Belonging to a Context : A Nurse-Led Lifestyle Intervention for Adult Persons with ADHD
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673. ; 42:3, s. 216-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mental illness involves an increased risk of lifestyle-related diseases. Although there are several ways to provide support to adult persons with ADHD, there is a lack of non-medical strategies for this purpose. This study explore how adult persons with ADHD with mental illness experienced taking part in a nurse-led lifestyle intervention. Fifteen participants participated in a 52-week lifestyle intervention. The analysis revealed two main categories; Building trusting relationships and Health together. This nurse-led lifestyle intervention could be an alternative or complement to current approaches to promoting health in adults with ADHD.

  • Relationship between Physical Activity and Health Outcomes in Persons with Psychotic Disorders after Participation in a 2-Year Individualized Lifestyle Intervention
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - Philadelphia, PA : Taylor & Francis. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673. ; 44:7, s. 629-638
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • People with psychotic disorders have a significantly increased risk of physical diseases and excessive mortality rates. The aim of the study was to investigate relationships between changes in physical activity, levels of salutogenic health, and glycated hemoglobin among people with psychotic disorders after participation in an individualized lifestyle intervention. The results from analyses showed that self-reported increased physical activity was positively associated with the level of salutogenic health and negatively associated with the level of HbA1c on an individual level. The results indicate that coordinated, individualized, holistic and health-promoting nursing care is crucial to enabling enhanced lifestyle within this vulnerable target group. © 2023 The Author(s). • "Seeing a Brighter Future" - Experiences of Adolescents with Common Mental Disorders Receiving the Problem-Solving Therapy "Youth Friendship Bench" in Zimbabwe
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1096-4673 .- 0161-2840. ; 42:11, s. 1019-1029
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Zimbabwe common mental disorders are prevalent among adolescents and the treatment gap is large. The recently introduced Youth Friendship Bench intervention (YouFB) addresses this gap by task-shifting youth lay health workers to offer a culturally contextualised, manual-based, six-session problem-solving therapy to adolescents, 16-19 years of age. The aim of this study was to explore participants´ experiences of YouFB to attain a first insight into this novel intervention. Interviews with nine adolescents were analysed using qualitative content analysis on a latent level. The experience of YouFB was positive, perceived to offer hope and relief from feelings of isolation and uncertainty, increase manageability of problems, and contribute to feelings of autonomy, resulting in a feeling of optimism about the future. The notion among participants that this brief intervention had such a positive influence on their lives, sparks interest because of its applicability in low-resource settings.

  • The Effects of an Equine-Assisted Therapeutic Intervention on Well-Being in Persons Diagnosed with Schizophrenia. A Pilot Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - Philadelphia, PA : Taylor & Francis. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673. ; 44:2, s. 104-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The process of personal recovery among persons diagnosed with schizophrenia may be facilitated through innovative health promotion interventions targeting multidimensional aspects of subjective well-being. The current pilot study aims to test the use of self-rated questionnaires as a means of evaluation of the effects of an equine-assisted intervention for persons diagnosed with schizophrenia. Twenty adults diagnosed with schizophrenia were offered a 12-week EAT intervention performed six times once every 14 days by a licenced mental health nurse. Two validated self-rated questionnaires, HSCL-25 and SHIS were used as outcome measurements at baseline and at post-treatment, additionally the self-rated questionnaire PANAS was completed twice a week starting one week before the 12 week - EAT intervention. Only six of the twenty participants managed to complete the validated questionnaires. Despite the low response rate of approximately 30 %, a significant difference was found between pre and post scores for positive affect and well-being. Effect sizes, ranging from small to large for pre-to-post treatment scores indicated less depression and anxiety, more positive affect, less negative affect, and reinforced well-being. Results suggest that EAT interventions may have beneficial effects among persons diagnosed with schizophrenia and that a varied range of research methods is needed to create a solid evidence base for EAT interventions intended for the target group. © 2023 The Author(s). • Engagement, Responsibility, Collaboration, and Abandonment : Nurses' Experiences of Assessing Suicide Risk in Psychiatric Inpatient Care
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673. ; 42:8, s. 776-783
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Suicide risk assessment is a complex task for nurses working in psychiatric inpatient care. This study explored psychiatric inpatient nurses' experiences of assessing suicide risk. A qualitative design was used, and 10 interviews were subjected to qualitative content analysis. Nurses described suicide risk assessments as requiring them to create caring alliances and to take responsibility. Collaborating with colleagues was another part of nurses' experiences, as was feeling abandoned. To make the assessment safely, nurses need a combination of caring alliances, support from colleagues, clear guidelines, training and time for collegial reflection to create a supportive working climate.

  • Nursing Staff’s Experiences of Caring for People with Mental Ill-Health in General Emergency Departments: A Qualitative Descriptive Study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Issues in Mental Health Nursing. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0161-2840 .- 1096-4673. ; 43:12, s. 1145-1154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While people with mental ill-health report unsatisfying experiences and poor treatment in general emergency departments, nursing staff report a lack of adequate knowledge and training. This study describes nursing staff’s experiences caring for people with mental ill-health in general emergency departments. A qualitative descriptive design was used and 14 interviews were subjected to qualitative content analysis. Results show that nursing staff are dealing with uncertainty and competing priorities when caring for people with mental ill-health. Nursing staff must both take and be given the opportunity to maintain and develop confidence and independence and need support in promoting mental health recovery.
