  • The dynamics of the winner-loser gap in satisfaction with democracy: Evidence from a Swedish citizen panel
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 38:5, s. 625-641
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several studies have demonstrated a gap in support for the political system between electoral winners and losers. This research has generated a large stock of knowledge about the causes and effects of this winner-loser gap. However, we know little about the dynamics of the winner-loser gap over time. Drawing on a unique Swedish panel survey, this study investigates the stability of the winner-loser gap among Swedish voters over an electoral cycle of four years. The empirical analyses demonstrate a substantial consistency of the gap over time also when controlling for other determinants. The winner-loser gap thus seems to be a stable phenomenon rather than a short-lived election effect. The results are robust to different specifications and statistical techniques.

  • The legislature as a gendered workplace : Exploring members of parliament's experiences of working in the Swedish parliament
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 40:2, s. 197-214
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Do men and women legislators have equal opportunities to carry out their parliamentary duties? An important first step to uncover the parliament’s inner life is to evaluate members of parliament’s (MPs) experiences of their work environment. In this article, we explore the Swedish parliament where women have held over 40% of the seats for two decades to test the persistence of gendered norms and practices. Using an originally-collected survey dataset of 279 Swedish MPs (82% response rate), we find that female MPs experience greater pressure, higher levels of anxiety, and are subject to more negative treatment than male MPs. Yet, while men and women report participating in debates and influencing their political party’s agenda to the same degree, we conclude that the Parliament’s working environment remains gendered in that women pay a higher personal cost for their political engagement.

  • Measuring High Level Democratic Principles Using the V-Dem Data
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 37:5, s. 76-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the definition of extended conceptions of democracy has been widely discussed, the measurement of these constructs has not attracted similar attention. In this article we present new measures of polyarchy, liberal democracy, deliberative democracy, egalitarian democracy, and participatory democracy that cover most polities in the period 1900 to 2013. These indices are based on data from a large number of indicators collected through the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) project. We present and discuss the theoretical considerations and the concrete formula underlying the aggregation of indicators and components into high level measures of democracy. In addition, we show how these measures reflect variations in quality of democracy, given the respective ideals, in 2012. In the conclusion scholars are encouraged to make use of the rich dataset made available by V-Dem.

  • United Nations electoral assistance: More than a fig leaf?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; 40:2, s. 181-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © The Author(s) 2018. Between 2007 and 2014 the United Nations (UN) assisted more than one-third of all national elections worldwide. Its experts routinely provide substantial technical advice on election management, logistical support such as the procurement of ballot papers and financial assistance. However, it remains doubtful if, and under which conditions, such assistance contributes to free and fair elections or has a positive long-term impact on democratization. This study assesses the impact of UN electoral assistance (UNEA) in Sudan, Nigeria and Libya. It finds that such assistance contributed to election quality in the presence of regime elites prioritizing electoral credibility in Nigeria (2011) and Libya (2012). In Nigeria, it seems plausible that UNEA had a medium-term impact on democratization. However, if regime elites undermine electoral freedom and fairness – as in Sudan (2010) – such positive effects are unlikely. Furthermore, in such contexts, the involvement of the UN may legitimize authoritarian practices.

  • What should a Russian father be like? : Exploring fatherhood norms and identifying norm patterns among inhabitants of Saint Petersburg
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Political Science Review. - : Sage Publications. - 0192-5121 .- 1460-373X. ; :4, s. 487-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on data from a survey conducted in Saint Petersburg in 2013, this article sheds new light on attitudes towards fatherhood in contemporary Russia. We explore what norms are held concerning fatherhood, how these attitudes are related to age, sex, education and income as well as to ideal?typical models established in previous research on fatherhood from Western Europe and the US. Thus, the article also discusses what explanatory value established theoretical models have for the Russian context. Norms of the role of the father in the family are related to general norms of masculinity and, hence, are an important part of the study of politics and the political climate in a society. The results show that there are several fatherhood ideals present in contemporary Northwestern Russia: a traditional breadwinner model, an active fatherhood model as well as what we refer to as a marginalized fatherhood model. The latter has not been substantially identified in previous research, and may tentatively be identified as a legacy of the Soviet era.
