- Outside of the Soviet Union, the effects of the large radioactive release from the Chernobyl accident have been most obvious along a strip of land running across Sweden from the coast of the Bothnian Sea to the mountain areas in the provinces of Jaemtland and Vaesterbotten. It should therefore be of particular interest to examine what policy changes have resulted from the accident. Many would consider the impacts in Sweden as trivial. The radioactive doses to the population have certainly been far below the levels where immediate health effects can be expected. The economic consequences of the high levels of radioactivity in reindeer meat, lake fish, game and wild berries may be serious for some individuals, but are not noticeable in the total Swedish economy. Only a fairly small part of the population have any reason to worry about delayed health effects, since the contaminated area is not very densely populated. Available online 12 July 2002.
