- We study various boundary and inner regularity questions for p(.)-(super)harmonic functions in Euclidean domains. In particular, we prove the Kellogg property and introduce a classification of boundary points for p(.)-harmonic functions into three disjoint classes: regular, semiregular and strongly irregular points. Regular and especially semiregular points are characterized in many ways. The discussion is illustrated by examples. Along the way, we present a removability result for bounded p(.)-harmonic functions and give some new characterizations of W-0(1,p(.)) spaces. We also show that p(.)-superharmonic functions are lower semicontinuously regularized, and characterize them in terms of lower semicontinuously regularized supersolutions.

- Non-linear elliptic Neumann problems, possibly in irregular domains and with data affected by low integrability properties, are taken into account. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence on the data of generalized solutions are established under a suitable balance between the integrability of the datum and the (ir)regularity of the domain. - Abnormal grain growth is often observed in cemented carbides during sintering, but cannot be understood in terms of the classical LSW theory. In this work the grain growth behavior during sintering at 1430 °C is studied both experimentally and by means of computer simulations. A model based on several processes—2-D nucleation of growth ledges, mass transfer across the interface and long-range diffusion coupled in series—is formulated and the equations are solved numerically. Both computer simulations and experimental studies reveal that the grain growth behavior is strongly influenced by the initial size distribution.

Phase reactions associated with the formation of Ti3SiC2 from TiC/Si powders

- The objective of this paper was to investigate the high temperature phase reactions that take place in a 3TiC/2Si powder mixture during heating. Special attention was paid to the formation of Ti3SiC2 and to the evaporation of gases. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry were used for in situ analysis of the phase reactions. Samples were heated at a rate of 5 K/min to various temperatures between 890 and 1450 °C and then cooled at a rate of 20 K/min. Heat treated samples were analysed by X-ray diffractometry. The first phase to form was TiSi2, which was consumed in the Ti3SiC2 forming reactions. No decomposition of Ti3SiC2 was observed at temperatures below 1450 °C. Evaporation of CO(g) and small amounts of Si(g) were detected at 1430 °C.

- Oxygen (delta O-18) and carbon (delta C-13) isotope records of calcitic carbonate components (Chara sp. algal encrustations and Bithynia tentaculata gastropod opercula) from a lake-sediment succession on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland, south-eastern Sweden, have been obtained to investigate regional climate dynamics during the Holocene. The hydrological sensitivity of the small lake, particularly in terms of spring snowmelt contribution to the local water budget, provides a means of tracing past changes in the influence of snow-bearing easterly winds across the Baltic Sea Proper, which signifies the wintertime strength of the Siberian High. Repeated episodic depletions in O-18 at the centennial scale correlate with events of increased potassium concentration in the GISP2 ice-core record from Greenland, which indicates a coupling to large-scale fluctuations in atmospheric circulation patterns. A corresponding correlation with simultaneous depletions in C-13 suggests repeated responses of the local lake hydrology to snow-rich winters through decreasing water residence time, perhaps augmented by methanogenesis due to prolonged ice-cover seasons under the influence of an expanding Siberian High. Frequency analysis of the isotopic records reveals well-defined fluctuations at quasi-500-520-, 670-, 830- and 1430-yr periodicities, and a gradually stronger impact of Polar air outbreaks across the southern Baltic Sea region with time after ca 6000 cal. BP.
