  • Actors and observers : Divergent attributions of constrained unfriendly behavior.
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Social behavior and personality. - 0301-2212 .- 1179-6391. ; 29:1, s. 87-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In light of previous attribution research, the authors investigated whether individuals make different causal inferences about their own, as opposed to other people's, constrained interpersonal behavior. Fifty-seven male and 59 female introductory psychology students were randomly assigned to act either friendly or unfriendly as they interacted with a same-sex confederate whose behavior was also contained. Participants assessed their own, and the confederates', behavior during the interaction and general dispositions. Consistent with previous research on the correspondence bias or fundamental attribution error, and the actor-observer bias, dispositional influences played a more prominent role in participants' attributions concerning the confederates' behavior than their own. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed, as are the implications of these findings on interpersonal relations.

  • Personality and work life: A comparison between hearing-impaired persons and a normal-hearing population
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: SOCIAL BEHAVIOR AND PERSONALITY. - : Scientific Journal Publishers Ltd. - 0301-2212. ; 31:2, s. 191-204
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Hearing loss is commonly found amongst the normal population and constitutes a hidden problem in working life. The aim of this study was to compare differences between hearing-impaired persons and a control sample of hearing subjects with regard to their work-life conditions and personality traits. The investigation group consisted of 41 hearing-impaired individuals with a mean age of 49 years. The control sample consisted of 182 subjects with a mean age of 36 years. Overall it was found that subjects in the control sample were more satisfied with their current work situation. However the investigation group reported that they performed well at work and, in comparison to the control sample, they reported a higher level of performance. Furthermore, the personality profiles differed between the two groups. The hearing-impaired sample – illustrated by case studies – showed significantly higher levels of muscular tension and psychastenia after controlling for gender and age. The results suggest the need for increased awareness of how work conditions may be experienced when a hear- ing impairment is present, as well as for future practical intervention programs to assist hear- ing-impaired employees to cope with an increasingly demanding work life.

  • Personality and self-concept in subgroups of patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Social Behavior and Personality. - : Scientific Journal Publishers Ltd. - 0301-2212. ; 30:4, s. 347-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The question of subgroups in eating disorders was addressed in this study. According to the DSM-IV manual, the two subtypes for anorexia nervosa are restricting and binge-eating/purging. For bulimia nervosa, the subtypes are purging and non-purging. An attempt was made here to examine alternative ways to create meaningful subgroups in the eating disordered patient group. A cluster analysis was performed in a group of 52 female patients (AN = 21, BN = 31). Fifty-five undergraduate students served as a control group. Three self report instruments were used: the Eating Disorder Inventory-2, Karolinska Scale of Personality, and Tennessee Self Concept Scale. The results reveal three different groups of patients. Factors like poor interoceptive ability and high degree of somatization differentiate between the groups, and contribute to severity of pathology, as well as to lower levels of self concept.

  • Missing values in peer assessment of social behavior using the RCP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Social Behavior and Personality. - 0301-2212. ; 29:1, s. 71-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article deals with probable causes for missing values when using the Revised Class Play instrument for peer assessment of social behavior. The study was conducted with 10-13 year old primary school children in Sweden. The findings reveal that missing values may be caused by the cognitive and linquistic complexity of the instrument (RCP), as well as by gender stereotypes. The results indicated that investigatin the causes of missing values provides valuable information about the validity of the RCP. This information can be used to improve the instructions on how and when to use the RCP.
