  • Is Structural Change Speeding Up? : The Case of Sweden, 1850-2000
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1750-2837 .- 0358-5522. ; 56:3, s. 192-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on the importance of structural change on productivity growth and conditions in the labour market. From a productivity perspective, a positive relation is found between structural change and productivity growth from the industrial breakthrough until the first oil crisis. From the early 1970s, this positive relation weakened and eventually became negative as labour moved from high to low productive industries. From a labour market perspective, it is found that extent of sectoral reallocation of labour has become more intense over the twentieth century. The extent of job gains and losses seems to have been more intense during the postwar period than during the industrialization phase.

  • Social Mobility in Nineteenth Century Rural Sweden - A Micro Level Analysis
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - 0358-5522. ; 56:2, s. 122-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preindustrial rural societies have often been pictured as stationary and immobile both geographically and socially. In the last decades this image has begun to change, especially as regards geographical mobility, while our knowledge of social mobility of rural preindustrial Europe is still rudimentary. This study focus on social attainment and mobility in a rural community of nineteenth century southern Sweden, making use of high quality micro-level demographic and socioeconomic data. We show that intergenerational social mobility was quite frequent. Downward mobility was more prevalent than upward, and also increased over time. Social attainment and mobility was determined by a combination of inherited factors and individual agency. Social origin was of major importance, and so was the social origin of the spouse, which points to the crucial role played by partner selection in determining individual social outcome. Availability of networks as measured by place of birth also played a role in social achievement.

  • Swedish harvests 1665-1820 : Early modern growth in the periphery of European economy
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0358-5522 .- 1750-2837. ; :1, s. 2-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today, one of the greatest challenges facing macroeconomic history is to quantify economic growth in theearly modernperiod.Thisarticlepresentsand discusses a series of total and per capita harvest production in Sweden within present borders for the period 16651820. The series is based on three main indices: grain prices, subjective harvest assessments and tithes. Various sources of harvests are more reliable as indicators of relative changes than of absolute levels. For example, tithes probably only taxed between 15 and 60 per cent of the actual harvests, but seem to capture annual harvest fluctuations reasonably well. To estimate the absolute level ofpercapita harvests, the index of the per capitaharvestproduction is linked to data for the early nineteenth century, which are more reliable. The article argues that harvests stagnated during the studied period, which is in line with several other studies for various European countries. The annual fluctuations were substantial.
