  • Diffractive ρ production at small x in future electron-ion colliders
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 43:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The future electron-ion (eA) collider is expected to probe the high energy regime of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD), with the exclusive vector meson production cross section being one of the most promising observables. In this paper we complement previous studies of exclusive processes presenting a comprehensive analysis of diffractive ρ production at small x. We compute the coherent and incoherent cross sections taking into account non-linear QCD dynamical effects and considering different models for the dipole-proton scattering amplitude and vector meson wave function. The dependence of these cross sections on the energy, photon virtuality, nuclear mass number and squared momentum transfer is analysed in detail. Moreover, we compare the non-linear predictions with those obtained in the linear regime. Finally, we also estimate the exclusive photon, and φ production and compare with the results obtained for ρ production. Our results demonstrate that the analysis of diffractive ρ production in future electron-ion colliders will be important in understanding the non-linear QCD dynamics.

  • A simple approach to alpha-decay fine structure
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 43:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a simple method to evaluate alpha-transition rates to low-lying excited states in even-even nuclei. For this a realistic alpha-daughter doublefolding interaction is approximated by a parabola in the region where the decay process takes place. This allows us to evaluate the penetration probability analytically. The main experimental features of branching ratios to excited states are reproduced by this simple approach.

  • Statistical uncertainties of a chiral interaction at next-to-next-to leading order
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 42:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have quantified the statistical uncertainties of the low-energy coupling-constants (LECs) of an optimized nucleon-nucleon interaction from chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order. In addition, we have propagated the impact of the uncertainties of the LECs to two-nucleon scattering phase shifts, effective range parameters, and deuteron observables.

  • Measurements of heavy-ion anisotropy and dose rates in the Russian section of the International Space Station with the Sileye-3/Alteino detector
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 42:2, s. 025002-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we present data on linear energy transfer (LET), dose and dose equivalent rates from different locations of the Russian part of the International Space Station (ISS) measured by the Sileye-3/Alteino detector. Data were taken as part of the ESA ALTCRISS project from late 2005 through 2007. The LET rate data shows a heavy-ion (LET > 50 keV/mu m) anisotropy. From the heavy-ion LET rate in the Zvezda service module we find ISS (y) over cap (Starboard) and (z) over cap (Nadir) to be about 10-15 times higher than in (x) over cap (Forward). The situation is similar for dose and dose equivalent rates, ranging from 25-40 mu Gy d(-1) in (x) over cap to about 75 mu Gy d(-1) in (z) over cap, whereas for the dose equivalent the rate peaks in (y) over cap with around 470 mu Sv d(-1). The heavy-ion anisotropy confirms what has been reported by the ALTEA collaboration. Measurements using two sets of passive detectors, DLR-TLDs and PADLES (TLD+CR-39), have also been performed in conjunction with Alteino measurements, both shielded and unshielded. The passive detectors register a dose rate about 3-5 times as high as Alteino, 260-280 mu Gy d(-1) for PADLES and 200-260 mu Gy d(-1) for DLR-TLDs. For the dose equivalent PADLES measurements ranges from 560-740 mu Sv d(-1).

  • Theoretical uncertainties of the Duflo-Zuker shell-model mass formulae
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 42:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is becoming increasingly important to understand the uncertainties of nuclear mass model calculations and their limitations when extrapolating to driplines. In this paper we evaluate the parameter uncertainties of the Duflo-Zuker (DZ) shell model mass formulae by fitting to the latest experimental mass compilation AME2012 using the least square and minimax fitting procedures. We also analyze the propagation of the uncertainties in binding energy calculations when extrapolated to driplines. The parameter uncertainties and uncertain propagations are evaluated with the help of the covariance matrix thus derived. Large deviations from the extrapolations of AME2012 are seen in superheavy nuclei. A simplified version of the DZ model (DZ19) with much smaller uncertainties than that of DZ33 is proposed. Calculations are compared with results from other mass formulae. Systematics on the uncertainty propagation as well as the positions of the driplines are also presented. The DZ mass formulae are shown to be well defined with good extrapolation properties and rather small uncertainties, even though some of the parameters of the full DZ33 model cannot be fully determined by fitting to available experimental data.

  • PINGU : a vision for neutrino and particle physics at the South Pole
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 44:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade (PINGU) is a proposed low-energy in-fill extension to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. With detection technology modeled closely on the successful IceCube example, PINGU will provide a 6 Mton effective mass for neutrino detection with an energy threshold of a few GeV. With an unprecedented sample of over 60 000 atmospheric neutrinos per year in this energy range, PINGU will make highly competitive measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters in an energy range over an order of magnitude higher than long-baseline neutrino beam experiments. PINGU will measure the mixing parameters theta(23) and Delta m(32)(2), including the octant of theta(23) for a wide range of values, and determine the neutrino mass ordering at 3 sigma median significance within five years of operation. PINGU's high precision measurement of the rate of nu(T) appearance will provide essential tests of the unitarity of the 3 x 3 PMNS neutrino mixing matrix. PINGU will also improve the sensitivity of searches for low mass dark matter in the Sun, use neutrino tomography to directly probe the composition of the Earth's core, and improve IceCube's sensitivity to neutrinos from Galactic supernovae. Reoptimization of the PINGU design has permitted substantial reduction in both cost and logistical requirements while delivering performance nearly identical to configurations previously studied.

  • ISOLDE past, present and future
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 44:4
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The idea of production of short-lived radioisotopes with the on-line technique has it roots in the early 1950s. In 1964 this became a reality when CERN approved an experiment at the 600 MeV proton synchro-cyclotron, the SC. The first experiments were performed in 1967 and since then the ISOLDE programme has gradually developed into a major undertaking. Since 1992 the ISOLDE Radioactive Beam Facility is linked to an external proton beam from the PS Booster. Today this 50 years old `lady' is more vital than ever. With the successful start of HIE-ISOLDE in 2015 one may conclude that the facility is ready to face the next half century with the boost of the success and the necessary knowledge to face new challenges. In this introductory article we give an overview of the history and pick up a few examples along the nuclear chart as illustrations of the experimental achievements.

  • Chiral-partner D mesons in a heat bath within QCD sum rules
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP PUBLISHING LTD. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 45:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Utilizing QCD sum rules, we extract the temperature dependences of the spectral properties of the pseudo-scalar and scalar D mesons regarded as chiral partners. Besides the masses also decay constants are analyzed as the D meson yields in heavy-ion collisions may be sensitive to their altered decay properties in an ambient strongly interacting medium. Our findings are (i) a decreasing scalar D meson mass for growing temperatures while its pseudo-scalar partner meson seems hardly affected, which is in qualitative agreement with hadronic model calculations; (ii) inferring an equally weak temperature dependence of the pseudo-scalar D meson decay properties the decreasing residua and decay constants of the scalar particle point towards partial chiral restoration. As a bonus of our analysis in the pseudo-scalar sector we determine the pseudoscalar decay constant at vanishing temperature. Due to the connection to particular leptonic branching fractions this decay constant is of great interest allowing for the determination of the off-diagonal CKM matrix element vertical bar V-cd vertical bar at zero temperature.

  • Nuclear-structure studies of exotic nuclei with MINIBALL
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 44:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy has been established at ISOLDE for nuclear-structure and nuclear-reaction studies with reaccelerated radioactive ion beams provided by the REX-ISOLDE facility. The MINIBALL spectrometer comprises 24 six-fold segmented, encapsulated high-purity germanium crystals. It was specially designed for highest γ-ray detection efficiency which is advantageous for low-intensity radioactive ion beams. The MINIBALL array has been used in numerous Coulomb-excitation and transfer-reaction experiments with exotic ion beams of energies up to 3 MeV A-1. The physics case covers a wide range of topics which are addressed with beams ranging from neutron-rich magnesium isotopes up to heavy radium isotopes. In the future the HIE-ISOLDE will allow the in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy program to proceed with higher secondary-beam intensity, higher beam energy and better beam quality.
