  • The actor view of nature and strategic change
  • 1996
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 12:3, s. 317-332
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores the relationships between the individual actor's way of thinking and local development work. The thesis advanced is that an individual actor's view of nature influences the orientation of local development strategies. Case studies of the significant actors and the development work in two Swedish municipalities with similar structures and economies based mainly on forest resources, form the empirical base. It is shown that differences in the strategies in the form of action patterns, can be traced back to different views of nature and different figures of thought. In order to reveal the actors' conceptions we have used a new method for analysing and synthesizing naturally produced text.

  • The joint impact of environmental uncertainty and tolerance of ambiguity on top managers' perceptions of the usefulness of non-conventional management accounting information
  • 1998
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 14:3, s. 259-271
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study investigates the effects of environmental uncertainty, organizational size, and tolerance of ambiguity of managers on the perceived usefulness of information characteristics of management accounting systems (MAS). An overall measure of usefulness based on the four non-conventional MAS information characteristics of scope, timeliness, level of aggregation, and information for integration were selected based on previous MAS studies (Chenhall and Morris, 1986, The Accounting Review61, 16–35). Tolerance of ambiguity was introduced as a moderator between environment and information usefulness because information is an important individual resource which makes individuals value information differently depending on the context. Size was included as a surrogate for organizational complexity to further test the strength of the person-environment interaction on information usefulness. The usefulness of MAS information is seen to be affected by interaction patterns between the individual, organizational and environmental levels. Data from 64 managers of New Zealand manufacturing companies suggests that managers of large firms with high tolerance of ambiguity perceive non-conventional MAS information to be most useful when the environment is uncertain.

  • Inquiring into the temporary organization : New directions for project management research
  • 1995
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 11:4, s. 319-333
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The theoretical field of project management (PM) can be described as a set of models and techniques for the planning and control of complex undertakings. The three main shortcomings of PM research and theory are identified as: (1) PM is seen as a general theory and a theoretical field in its own right, (2) research on PM is not sufficiently empirical, and (3) projects are seen as "tools." Instead, a diversity of theoretical perspectives should be employed in field research on "temporary organizations" in order to construct middle-range theories on different types of projects. These proposed future directions call for research on expectations, action and learning in project settings.

  • Does the CEO matter? An empirical study of small Swedish firms operating in turbulent environments
  • 1997
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 13:3, s. 251-270
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper develops and tests a framework for understanding the performance of small firms operating in highly turbulent environments. Performance is conceptualized as being multidimensional, taking into account both financial and market performance. The purpose was to delineate the importance of CEO characteristics (self-efficacy, tolerance for ambiguity and need for cognition) in relation to some aspects of firm orientation (Market vs. Internal and Planning vs. Implementation). The results showed that CEO characteristics tended to have a considerable impact on firm performance and on firm orientation, while no significant relationship between firm orientation and firm performance was found.
