  • Management is the solution: Now what was the problem? On the fragile basis for managerialism
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 27:4, s. 349-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper critically investigates the impact and meaning of managerialism in a pharmaceutical firm by exploring its shaky basis. Managers' explanations of the failure in research leading to new products showed considerable variety. This reflects the absence of any shared understanding of research inefficiencies and difficulties to determine the roots of the problems. Despite this people blame bad management and put hope to improved responsibility of managers. The study highlights the ambiguity of causes of the research inefficiencies and how this is suppressed as well as exploited by the introduction of a vague managerialist agenda. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. • Organizational design mechanisms for the R&D function in a world of offshoring
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:4, s. 431-438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Later years' globalization and increased competition has forced firms to re-evaluate their current configuration and location of activities An emerging shortage of talent and a recognition of knowledge sources far more spread around the globe have Induced firms to re-think their configuration of knowledge-intensive activities, such as R&D Disaggregation and dispersion of activities is though a double edged sword as it simultaneously enhances the access to resources and talent increasing the value of knowledge development activities in the firm, but also add to the costs of management and coordination In this article we discuss how designing the configuration of R&D activities and the utilization of organizational coordination and control mechanisms help firms to stay on top of the costs induced by inter-task interdependencies among the disaggregated R&D activities and thereby leveraging the knowledge and capabilities developed in the offshored activities We utilize the Danish wind mill company Vestas as an empirical example to illustrate our discussion.

  • When a new industry meets traditional and declining ones: An integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theory in a model of regional industry emergence processes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:3, s. 290-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes an integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theories in a model of regional industry emergence processes. Based on an inductive qualitative investigation we describe how a new industry emerges in a declining and peripheral region dominated by struggling and traditional local industry. The emanating model of regional industry emergence is based on four main processes; framing processes, movement mobilisation processes, inter-industry relational processes and dialectical processes, which together shape the emerging regional industry. This exemplifies how new regional industry mobilisation efforts provide an ‘anti-thesis' to traditional industry, and how established industry actors respond with contestation to protect their business concepts. Furthermore we illustrate how new industry actors reframe their concepts to complement dominating traditional industry and to overcome tensions and conflicts. Following dialectic interaction between new and traditional industry we noticed signs of acceptance and synthesis between the newly formed and old industry actors; ultimately resulting in a revitalisation of the region's traditional industry. As such, the paper makes a point of accounting for agency and productive conflict when understanding regional industry renewal and emergence.

  • The hierarchization of competing logics in psychiatric care in Sweden
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 30:3, s. 282-291
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In many healthcare organizations, the managerial institutional logic co-exists and competes with the professional institutional logic in the day-to-day work of managers and professionals. In its examination of the relationship between these two institutional logics at three psychiatric care units for children and adolescents, this study contributes to our understanding of the theoretical concepts and their practical implications for the actor-to-actor approaches to competing institutional healthcare logics. Many earlier studies use theoretical concepts to describe this co-existence as a relatively equal relationship between the competing logics. This study, using data from interviews, observations and shadowing, reveals the existence of a process we label “hierarchization”. In this process, the managerial logic dominates the professional logic although the latter logic still co-exists and competes, albeit in a subordinate role. The study also reveals that quantification of primarily patient throughput is used to legitimize the dominant managerial logic. Such use of quantification supports the meta-trend of placing trust in numbers.

  • Earnings sustainability, economic conditions and the value relevance of accounting information
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 29:3, s. 314-324
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study demonstrates that the value relevance of accounting information is influenced by the ability to capitalize investments in valuable resources. We use data from Sweden to show that firms that operate in industries in which accounting conservatism limits this capitalization display lower value relevance as a result of more unsustainable earnings components. However, when controlling for the different properties of sustainable and unsustainable earnings components, the difference vanishes. Moreover, we show that firms operating in industries in which more investments are immediately expensed display systematic temporal variations in the level of value relevance. We contend that economic conditions in the form of investment levels and growth expectations explain this variation. Thus, value relevance can be substantially affected by the prevailing economic context.

  • Leadership On Demand: Followers as initiators and inhibitors of managerial leadership
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221. ; 30:3, s. 344-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A key aspect of leadership is the followers’ constructions of its value and relevance. Based on two empirical, qualitative case studies, this paper highlights the importance of the ‘demand’ for leadership when leader–follower relationships are established. We further discuss how followers influence, inhibit and initiate managerial leadership (i.e. leadership acts from their formal superior targeting themselves), and suggest ‘Leadership On Demand’ as a useful metaphor when trying to conceptualize the leader–follower dynamics in our study.
