  • Technological capabilities and late shakeouts : Industrial dynamics in the advanced gas turbine industry, 1987-2002
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 17:2, s. 335-392
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article focuses on technological discontinuities and late shakeouts in mature industries. The empirical case is combined cycle gas turbine technology in the power generation industry, where two of four main incumbents (GE, ABB, Siemens, and Westinghouse) exited the industry after several years of competition. We show that the vast differences in firm performance are strongly related to variation in technological capabilities, such as sourcing and integration of knowledge from related industries and after-launch problem solving. The findings from this case may also be of general interest for studies of dynamics in other mature, complex industries.

  • Knowledge creation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth : a historical review
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 18:6, s. 1193-1229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the relationship between knowledge creation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth in the United States over the last 150 years. Distinguishing between general knowledge and economically useful knowledge, we examine the changes over time in the locus and content of new knowledge creation: the role of universities, particularly engineering schools and land-grant universities, industrial laboratories, and corporate research and development (R&D) laboratories prior to World War II. The practical orientation of US academic R&D and the close research interaction between academia and industry are noted. We study the unprecedented increase in R&D spending in the United States during and after World War II and how it was converted into economic activity via incumbent firms in the early postwar period and increasingly via new ventures in the last few decades.

  • The Knowledge Filter, Entrepreneurship and Economic Growth
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 18, s. 1193-1229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the relationship between knowledge creation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth in the United States over the last 150 years. According to the “new growth theory,” investments in knowledge and human capital generate economic growth via spillovers of knowledge. But the theory does not explain how or why spillovers occur, or why large investments in R&D do not always result in economic growth. What is missing is “the knowledge filter” - the distinction between general knowledge and economically useful knowledge. Also missing is a mechanism (such as entrepreneurship) converting economically relevant knowledge into economic activity. This paper shows that the unprecedented increase in R&D spending in the United States during and after World War II was converted into economic activity via incumbent firms in the early postwar period and increasingly via new ventures in the last few decades.

  • Corporate restructuring and labor productivity growth
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP): Policy E - Oxford Open Option D. - 1464-3650 .- 0960-6491. ; 15:4, s. 683-714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This article analyzes corporate restructuring and its role in generating labor productivity growth in a sample of large Swedish manufacturing corporations. It is found that external restructuring, including ownership changes, start-ups, and closures of plants, accounted for up to 47% of the productivity growth of the sample of corporations during the 1986-1996 period. The results indicate that the productivity of large multi-plant corporations potentially grew at least twice as fast as that of single-plant firms with the same internal productivity growth, thanks to their organizational flexibility. Divestitures of low productive plants were found to play a particularly important role in the replacement process generating productivity growth. The effect of external restructuring on productivity is to some extent explained by a shift toward a more skill-intensive production.

  • From CoPS to mass production? Capabilities and innovation in power generation equipment manufacturing
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 14:1, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a case study of small, distributed electrical power generators, representing a potential substitute for large power plants, and raises questions regarding the ability of established manufacturers to manage this kind of technological transition. The analysis demonstrates that the step from experimental R&D to commercial production is particularly difficult for the incumbents. This observation is explained by showing that whereas manufacturing of large power plants rests upon extensive systems integration capabilities, distributed generators are based on a 'plug-and-play' logic. © ICC Association 2005, all rights reserved.
