    • The Yb275C60 thin film was prepared and studied by using the synchrotron radiation ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy(PES) in an ultrahighvacuum system. The spectral line obtained in the range between the Fermi level and ~5 eV binding energy consists of those lines from the valence band (the molecular orbital LUMO, HOMO and HOMO1 derived energy bands of C60) and core levels(Yb 4f7/2 and 4f5/2). Taking into account the variations of the photoinization cross sections of C 2p and Yb 4f with different photon energies, we have measured the photoemission spectra under the condition of varying photon energies, and carried out simulations to deduce the component contributions. The peak positions, widths and intensities for the components are obtained quantitatively. The results reveals that the photoemission of 4f electrons has a significant intensity with the photon energies larger than ~300 eV, and that the measured spectra depart drastically from the density of states of the valence band. To observe the valence band structure, one should carry out the PES measurements by using photons with energies less than 300 eV. The photoionization crosssection oscillation is also observed in Yb275C60 with almost the same oscillation period as that for pure C60 However, the oscillation amplitude is obviously smaller than that for pure C60, which reveals that the chemical environment of C60 in compounds has nonnegligible effects on the photoionization crosssection oscillation phenomenon.

  • Theoretical studies on electronic transport properties of six-membered heterocyclic molecules

    • By applying the elastic scattering Green's function theory in combination with the hybrid density function theory, the electronic transport properties of molecular junctions constructed by the six-membered heterocyclic molecules, pyridazine-2, 5-dithiol, pyrazine-2, 5-dithiol, and pyrimidine-2, 5-dithiol, have been studied. For the heterocyclic molecule pyridine, the influence of the terminal atoms on the current-voltage characteristics has also been obtained. We have accurately determined the coupling constant between the molecule and electrodes by using the frontier molecular orbital theory and the perturbation method. The numerical results show that pyridazine-2,5-dithiol has higher current and conductance, while the conductance of pyrimidine-2, 5-dithiol is very small when the bias voltage is lower than 4V. The conductivity of the molecule pyridine with selenium atom as the terminal atom is higher than that with oxygen atom or sulfur atom.

  • Momentum transfer at quantum-vacuum level inside an anisotropic magnetoelectric medium

    • The breaking of universal symmetry of electromagnetic field distribution in an anisotropic magnetoelectric material will give rise to nonzero vacuum momentum. This may lead to the transfer of momentum between the anisotropic quantum vacuum and the magnetoelectric material. Very recently, Feigel considered the quantum vacuum contribution to the momentum transfer effect [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 (2004) 020404]. An alternative approach is proposed based on the eigenvector equation of electromagnetic field to calculate the total mechanical contribution of all anisotropic quantum-vacuum modes to the material momentum. It is suggested that the said macroscopic mechanical effect of quantum vacuum on the anisotropic material can be detected by current technology (e. g. fiber optical sensor), which can measure nanoscale velocity. Physical mechanism of such quantum vacuum effects and potential applications are discussed.

  • The nonadiabatic conditional geometric phase shift in a coiled fiber system

    • The nonadiabatic conditional geometric phase gate is required in the topological quantum computation in order to overcome the conflict between the requirement of adiabatic condition(to avoid the severe distortion from the nonadiabaticity to the results) and the removal of decoherence effects. It was demonstrated that the effective Hamiltonian that describes the propagation of photon fields inside the coiled fiber is just the Wang-Matsumoto type of Hamiltonian. Thus, the coiled fiber system will automatically generate the nonadiabatic conditional geometric phase shift. In addition, it was shown that the dynamical phase (resulting from the effective Hamiltonian) acquired by the polarized photons vanishes, and the conditional initial state can be easily prepared only by controlling the initial wave vector of photons. In a word, the coiled fiber system can automatically satisfy the requirements and conditions, which were proposed by Wang and Matsumoto in order to create the nonadiabatic conditional geometric phase shift in their NMR scheme.

  • Study of SH acoustic radiation field excited by a piezoelectric strip

    • A piezoelectric strip of infinite length but with finite width and thickness is placed on top of an isotropic elastic half space. The piezoelectric strip is excited by an electrical signal and the acoustic field is generated. The piezoelectric strip is of type 6 mm crystal system oriented along its length direction. The SH wave is studied for the structure of this piezoelectric transducer. At first, the field is expanded as a Fourier series in the piezoelectric strip and as a Fourier integral in the half space. Then, the response of the solution inside the piezoelectric strip and in the half space is obtained by the boundary conditions. The acoustic field distribution is analyzed and compared to that obtained by the traditional method. Finally, the acoustic radiation field at the far field is investigated by the saddle point method and the directional factor is analyzed. It is found that the traditional method is valid only in the case where the product of the frequency with the width of the piezoelectric strip is less than 1 kHz · m. The stress and displacement in the piezoelectric strip are oscillatory distributions when the frequency increases. The greater the frequency, the greater the difference between the traditional method and the present method.

  • Studies on two-photon absorption cross-sections of 1,4-dimethoxy-2,5-divinyl-benzene derivatives

    • The one-photon and two-photon absorption properties of a series of 1, 4-dimethoxy-2, 5-divinyl-benzene derivatives are investigated by use of the analytic response theory at HF level. The one-photon and two-photon fluorescence spectra of E, E-2-5Bis[4'-(N, N-di-n-butylamino) styryl]-1 4-dimenthoxybenzene are measured. The numerical results show that these molecules have strong two-photon absorption cross sections. In the visible light region, the maximal one-photon absorption strengths of the molecules occur in the first excited state. Furthermore, the maximal two-photon absorption cross sections of the D-pi-A typed molecules still appear in the first state, but for D-pi-D typed molecules the second excited state has the maximal two-photon absorption cross-section. The optical properties of the molecules are closely related to the electric property of the donor and acceptor. The symmetrically substituted molecules can not be determined to have a larger two-photon absorption cross section than the asymmetrically substituted molecules for such a kind of pi-center. The charge-transfer process for the charge-transfer states is displayed, and then the mechanism of photopolymerization is discussed qualitatively.

  • Controlling the photonic bandgap structures via manipulation of refractive index of electromagnetically induced transparency vapor

    • A new application of coherent manipulation of EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency) medium is suggested. A two-dimensional photonic crystal with a triangle lattice of elliptic air cylinders, which are filled with the EIT atomic vapor, in the KAs background material is designed. By manipulating the refractive index of the EIT vapor via the external control field, one can obtain the controllable bandgap structure that is sensitive to the variations of external conditions (e.g. the intensity of the control field) . It is shown that a large complete bandgap of about 0.0503ωe in the region of high normalized frequency could be achieved by choosing the specific parameters such as the spontaneous decay rate, dephasing rate, Rabi frequency of control light, atomic number density as well as elliptic geometric parameters.

  • Effective polymerization of C60 in SWNTs under high pressure and simultaneous UV light irradiation

    • The C-60 @ SWNT ( peapod) samples were prepared by the vapor diffusion method. Polymerization of C60 molecules in single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) under high pressure and simultaneous irradiation of UV laser (325 nm) has been carried out for the first time by using diamond anvil cell. Raman spectra of the peapod samples decompressed from high pressure indicated that C60 molecules form one-dimensional orthorhombic polymer in SWNTs under UV laser irradiation at a high pressure of 21.5 GPa, which is lower than that for the polymerization of samples induced by high pressure only. The polymerization is an irreversible phase transition in the peapod.
