  • Dynamic generation of photonic spatial quantum states with an all-fiber platform
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 31:6, s. 10673-10683
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Photonic spatial quantum states are a subject of great interest for applications in quantum communication. One important challenge has been how to dynamically generate these states using only fiber-optical components. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber system that can dynamically switch between any general transverse spatial qubit state based on linearly polarized modes. Our platform is based on a fast optical switch based on a Sagnac interferometer combined with a photonic lantern and few-mode optical fibers. We show switching times between spatial modes on the order of 5 ns and demonstrate the applicability of our scheme for quantum technologies by demonstrating a measurement-device-independent (MDI) quantum random number generator based on our platform. We run the generator continuously over 15 hours, acquiring over 13.46 Gbits of random numbers, of which we ensure that at least 60.52% are private, following the MDI protocol. Our results show the use of photonic lanterns to dynamically create spatial modes using only fiber components, which due to their robustness and integration capabilities, have important consequences for photonic classical and quantum information processing.(c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement

  • Polarization-independent single-photon switch based on a fiber-optical Sagnac interferometer for quantum communication networks
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : OPTICAL SOC AMER. - 1094-4087. ; 28:22, s. 33731-33738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An essential component of future quantum networks is an optical switch capable of dynamically routing single photons. Here we implement such a switch, based on a fiber-optical Sagnac interferometer design. The routing is implemented with a pair of fast electro-optical telecom phase modulators placed inside the Sagnac loop, such that each modulator acts on an orthogonal polarization component of the single photons, in order to yield polarization-independent capability that is crucial for several applications. We obtain an average extinction ratio of more than 19 dB between both outputs of the switch. Our experiment is built exclusively with commercial off-the-shelf components, thus allowing direct compatibility with current optical communication systems. • Frequency comb enhanced Brillouin microscopy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 28:20, s. 29540-29552
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brillouin light scattering (BLS) microscopy is a well established and powerful technique to study acoustic and magnetic excitations in the frequency domain with sub-micron spatial resolution. Many other spectroscopic techniques have benefited from the introduction of femtosecond laser sources to optically pump and stimulate the sample under investigation. In BLS microscopy, the use of femtosecond lasers as the excitation source introduces several challenges, primarily since the measured frequency shift is small and the signal levels are weak due to the low duty cycle of typical femtosecond lasers. Here we present a method to evade these challenges. A strong enhancement of the weak scattering amplitude on selected modes is observed by pumping the sample with a high repetition rate frequency comb laser source. The laser beam can be focused to the diffraction limit, providing a micron pumping area. We can thus preserve the innate high frequency and spatial resolution of BLS microscopy. Furthermore, we are able to induce a point-like source of mode-selected elementary excitations which propagate away from the pumping spot. We conclude that we have demonstrated frequency comb pumped BLS microscopy as an attractive tool for studies of ultrafast induced laser dynamics directly in the frequency domain. • Two phase-matching regimes in high-order harmonic generation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 31:20, s. 31687-31697
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-order harmonic generation (HHG) provides scalable sources of coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation with pulse duration down to the attosecond time scale. Efficient HHG requires the constructive interplay between microscopic and macroscopic effects in the generation volume, which can be achieved over a large range of experimental parameters from the driving field properties to those of the generating medium. Here, we present a systematic study of the harmonic yield as a function of gas pressure and medium length. Two regimes for optimum yield are identified, supporting the predictions of a recently proposed analytical model. Our observations are independent on the focusing geometry and, to a large extent, on the pulse duration and laser intensity, providing a versatile approach to HHG optimization.

  • Development towards high-resolution kHz-speed rotation-free volumetric imaging
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 32:3, s. 4413-4426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • X-ray multi-projection imaging (XMPI) has the potential to provide rotation-free 3D movies of optically opaque samples. The absence of rotation enables superior imaging speed and preserves fragile sample dynamics by avoiding the centrifugal forces introduced by conventional rotary tomography. Here, we present our XMPI observations at the ID19 beamline (ESRF, France) of 3D dynamics in melted aluminum with 1000 frames per second and 8 µm resolution per projection using the full dynamical range of our detectors. Since XMPI is a method under development, we also provide different tests for the instrumentation of up to 3000 frames per second. As the high-brilliance of 4th generation light-sources becomes more available, XMPI is a promising technique for current and future X-ray imaging instruments.

  • Optical bunching of particles in a liquid flow
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 1094-4087. ; 29:21, s. 34394-34410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-speed liquid micro-jets are used to rapidly and repeatedly deliver protein microcrystals to focused and pulsed X-ray beams in the method of serial femtosecond crystallography. However, the current continuous flow of crystals is mismatched to the arrival of X-ray pulses, wasting vast amounts of an often rare and precious sample. Here, we introduce a method to address this problem by periodically trapping and releasing crystals in the liquid flow, creating locally concentrated crystal bunches, using an optical trap integrated in the microfluidic supply line. We experimentally demonstrate a 30-fold increase of particle concentration into 10 Hz bunches of 6.4 tm diameter polystyrene particles. Furthermore, using particle trajectory simulations, a comprehensive description of the optical bunching process and parameter space is presented. Adding this compact optofluidics device to existing injection systems would thereby dramatically reduce sample consumption and extend the application of serial crystallography to a greater range of protein crystal systems that cannot be produced in high abundance. Our approach is suitable for other microfluidic systems that require synchronous measurements of flowing objects. • High-contrast coercive field engineering for periodic poling of RbKTiOPO4 with Ba2+/K+ ion-exchange
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 32:8, s. 14252-14260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate a new method of coercive field engineering for periodic poling of RbKTiOPO4 (RKTP). By ion exchanging RKTP in a molten salt containing 7 mol% Ba(NO3)2 and 93 mol% KNO3 we achieve more than an order of magnitude difference in polarization switching time between the exchanged and non-exchanged regions. This method is used to fabricate periodic gratings of 2.92 µm in 1 mm thick bulk RKTP for second harmonic generation at 779 nm with a normalized conversion efficiency of 2%/Wcm. We show that the poled domain structures are stable at 300 °C, and that there is no bulk refractive index modification associated with the periodic ion exchange.

  • Hard X-ray stereographic microscopy for single-shot differential phase imaging
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 31:11, s. 18399-18406
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The characterisation of fast phenomena at the microscopic scale is required for the understanding of catastrophic responses of materials to loads and shocks, the processing of materials by optical or mechanical means, the processes involved in many key technologies such as additive manufacturing and microfluidics, and the mixing of fuels in combustion. Such processes are usually stochastic in nature and occur within the opaque interior volumes of materials or samples, with complex dynamics that evolve in all three dimensions at speeds exceeding many meters per second. There is therefore a need for the ability to record three-dimensional X-ray movies of irreversible processes with resolutions of micrometers and frame rates of microseconds. Here we demonstrate a method to achieve this by recording a stereo phase-contrast image pair in a single exposure. The two images are combined computationally to reconstruct a 3D model of the object. The method is extendable to more than two simultaneous views. When combined with megahertz pulse trains of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) it will be possible to create movies able to resolve 3D trajectories with velocities of kilometers per second.

  • Quantum analysis of luminescence of an exciton in a meso-cavity
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optical Society of America. - 1094-4087. ; 29:13, s. 20724-20734
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interaction of cavity modes with an exciton in a meso-cavity (the structure supporting several cavity modes separated by an energy interval comparable to Rabi-splitting of an exciton and cavity modes) has been analyzed using a quantum-mechanical approach. Simultaneous interaction of an exciton and several cavity modes results in few novel effects such as ladder-like increase of the exciton population in the system, quantum beating and non-monotonic dependence of the ground polariton state in the system on the pumping.
