  • Sex Dolls in the Swedish Media Discourse : Intimacy, Sexuality, and Technology
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 25, s. 1227-1248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sex dolls are a complex phenomenon with several diverse possible emotional, sexual and therapeutic uses. They can be part of a broad variety of sexual practices, and also function as a sexual aid. However, the media discourse on sex dolls first and foremost concerns how we perceive the relationship between intimacy and technology. A critical discourse analysis of the Swedish media discourse on sex dolls reveals six themes which dominate the discourse: (a) the definition of what a human being is; (b) a discourse on the (technological and existential) future; (c) a social effort; (d) a loveless phenomenon; (e) men's violence against women; and (f) pedophilia. Accordingly, this discourse is very conservative and normative in its view of sexuality, technology, and humanity. Overall, the dominant themes do not provide any space for positive effects of technology on human sexuality, and if they do, it is usually as a substitute for something else.

  • Beating Around the Bush – Swedish Schoolgirls’ Coping Strategies and Impact Processes of Sexual Harassment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 27, s. 415-434
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to contribute knowledge about Swedish school girls’ perspectives of sexual harassment and their relations to peers when exposed to violence in terms of sexual harassment, both online and offline. The empirical data was collected through pair interviews where 28 girls participated. The theoretical framework was based on coping strategies that people use when facing stressful situations. The transcribed empirical data was read and interpreted based on what appeared to be important and decisive related to the theoretical framework. The found strategies are divided into three main categories, namely, problem-focused behavioural strategies, emotion-focused cognitive strategies, and emotion-focused behavioural strategies. The results show that the girls use different strategies depending on if the harassment occurs online or offline and if the perpetrator is known or unknown. Problem-focused cognitive strategies are used due to the specific context. Emotion-focused cognitive strategies are foremost used if the perpetrator is a known friend.

  • Personal is Not Political? : The Sexual Self in Russian Talk Shows of the 1990s
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 24:2, s. 389-407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The changes in the public discourse on sex and the sexual self in post-Soviet Russia are usually referred to as a “sexual revolution”. However, the fast rejection of freedoms with respect to sexual identities, same-sex relationships and withering of the public discussions about intimacies and sex-education already in the early 2000s requires closer look at discourses of the “sexual revolution” of the 1990s in Russia in order to understand better the character of this rapid change. In this paper I am particularly interested in the discursive dimension and historical implications of the new sexual selves as expressed in the public space in a form of TV-show. The article is analyzing discourses around sexuality and intimacy with focus on two talk-shows broadcasted by the Russian television in the 1990s (“Ya sama” and “Pro eto”) and dealing with gender identities, sexualities and intimacies. I show that articulation of the sexual self as a choice that is relatively free from political and material constraints was an important dimension of the public presentation of sexuality. At the same time differences and deviations from the institutionalized and normalized (hetero)sexuality started to be seen as a subject of “personal choice” and “individual responsibility”. © 2020, The Author(s).

  • Post-socialist Revolutions of Intimacy : An Introduction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 24:2, s. 359-370
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the past decade, the states situated on the territory of the former Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe have made newspaper headlines around the world for topics on gender and sexuality: it seems that each step towards gender equality and inclusive sexual citizenship in the region has been accompanied by counter-actions on different scales. In what way is the present day of appropriate legislation and recent backlash connected to the legacies of regulations of gender relationships, intimacies, and sexualities under state socialism? What role do economic, political, and educational changes that took place in the region in the 1990s play in these developments? And finally, can we speak about certain similarities between discourses on sexuality and intimacy in the “West,” on the one hand, and in post-Soviet and East European countries, on the other? Reflecting on current changes in post-socialist societies, the authors of this special issue give their own answers to these questions.

  • Michalina Wisłocka’s The Art of Loving and the Legacy of Polish Sexology
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 24:2, s. 371-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the development of Polish sexology as well as the challenges of sex education in Poland in general and the implications of Michalina Wisłocka’s work within the field of adult sex education in particular, both from a historical perspective and against the background of sociopolitical circumstances and the backlash in the sexual politics of today’s Poland. Michalina Wisłocka (1921–2005) is the author of Sztuka kochania [The Art of Loving] from 1978—the most widely read Polish handbook on sex, sexuality and eroticism. Although there has not been a sexual revolution in Poland, the success of the book may be considered revolutionary as it had an enormous impact on sexual awareness among the Poles at least for two decades after its publication. Nowadays, the book is considered groundbreaking as regards its normalizing effect on the language of sex, despite the omnipresence of gender role stereotypes. Even so, the revival of Wisłocka that has been seen in Poland in recent years is quite remarkable because the book appears traditional and largely outdated from today’s perspective. In the context of the postsocialist retraditionalization of sexual politics in Poland, however, the revived interest in Wisłocka seems less ambiguous since it can be perceived both as a sign of backlash and a sign of renewed demand for sexual knowledge and education.

  • Sex Work Policy Worldwide : A Scoping Review
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer Nature. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 26:6, s. 2288-2310
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Researchers have conducted a lot of research into policies regulating commercialsex. This study is a scoping review aiming to characterize the research field as wellas finding research gaps and suggest directions for future research. Nine electronicdatabases and a key journal (Sexuality Research and Social Policy) were searchedusing Boolean operators to identify studies containing “prostitution AND policy”or “sex work AND policy” in the title and/or abstract. A total of 3663 studies wereidentified, and of them, 351 were deemed eligible after duplicates were removed andthe title and abstract had been assessed according to the study’s inclusion criteria. The studies on sex work policy were often conducted in English-speaking countries, the majority of which were about streetwalkers, criminalization of sex work, andtrafficking policies. Interestingly, few empirical studies were conducted and stigma-tization was frequently mentioned. There is an unmet need for studies addressing thelived experiences of sex workers under the Swedish Model, as well as studies aboutmigrant sex workers and studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Research-ers should direct additional efforts into understanding the lived experiences of sexworkers under the Swedish Model as well as into studies covering Africa, Asia, andLatin America.

  • Swedish Boys’ Narratives on Sexual Harassment and their Ways of Doing Masculinity
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When #MeToo was the most intensive, many girls, women and non-binary people’s voices were heard about being exposed. Knowledge on boys’ perspectives is important as they need to be involved to provide change. In research, boys’ and men’s voices are missing unless accounted for in settings associated with violence or harassment. This project contributes knowledge about schoolboys’ positionings with respect to masculine hegemony and sexual harassment. The analysis of pair interviews with 22 participating boys, aged 14–16, suggests three ways in which they relate to the topic. With respect to the discursive patterns labelled equal boy and let-go boy, gender issues are competently expressed and these two patterns convey knowledge about the power that the gender culture exercises. These two discursive patterns also suggest a proficient way of taking the gender order into account to fit in with the peer group. Nevertheless, the third pattern, labelled the dominant boy, suggests settings when a traditional masculinity culture exercises power. We conclude that discussions on situations where different discursive patterns are overt would facilitate a shift towards gender equal discourses with less risk of sexual harassment.

  • Changes in Intimacy and Sexuality During the COVID-19 Pandemic : A Qualitative Analysis of Data from a Survey on Partnered Individuals in Eight European Countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 27:2, s. 693-714
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This qualitative study explores experiences of intimacy and sexuality during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic of 3357 participants from Croatia, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, and Turkey. Data were collected through open-ended questions within a survey on sexuality during the pandemic. Based on a reflexive thematic analysis three themes occurred. The first theme No change was described by 41% when summarizing their sex life during the pandemic. The second theme Positive change was experienced by 25%, and the third theme Negative change by 21%. An overarching theme then emerged as: "Still the same trajectories, but the pandemic could be a catalyst for improved or worsened sex- life." For those intimate partnered individuals who already had problems with intimacy and sexuality before the COVID-19 pandemic it seemed to remain the same or deteriorated throughout the pandemic. For those with positive experiences of intimacy and sexuality before the COVID-19 pandemic it remained the same or improved throughout the pandemic. These findings are relevant for researchers and clinicians in developing preventive and supportive interventions in the context of crisis and social isolation.

  • Women as Agents of Change : Male Circumcision and HIV Prevention in Kenya
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer Nature. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 26:3, s. 1074-1089
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The recent promotion of male circumcision as a public health strategy is based on research evidence from three randomised control trials conducted in South Africa, Kisumu in Kenya, and Rakai in Uganda. The evidence suggests that male circumcision provides heterosexual men 50-60% protective benefit against HIV infection. For the Kikuyu people in Kenya, male circumcision is a cultural rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. The focus of this study was male circumcision practices in Muranga of Kenya and their implications on public health. There is a paucity of studies and reports on cultural practices of male circumcision in Kenya. This article discusses male circumcision meaning and associated changes with a central focus on women. A qualitative research design underpinned by an Interpretivist paradigm was employed. Focused ethnographic methodology captured the cultural context of the ritual and its meaning. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to select the study participants. Indepth interviews with 13 circumcision mentors, participant observations in three churches, and narratives writing with 43 male students from six schools were conducted. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings suggest a changing circumcision ritual with women at the forefront of most of these changes in a male arena ritual. The church, hospital, and urbanisation emerged as the drivers of change, through which women aimed at protecting their sons from practices in the ritual, that they deemed harmful, such as harassment and sexual violence. The changes in the male circumcision ritual are significant to public health.

  • Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Counselling in Relation to Female Genital Cutting : Swedish Professionals' Approach to Menstrual Pain as an Empirical Example
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sexuality & Culture. - : Springer. - 1095-5143 .- 1936-4822. ; 26, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, as well as in an international context, professionals are urged to acquire knowledge about possible health effects of female genital cutting (FGC) in order to tackle prevention and care in relation to the practice. While professionals are guided by policies and interventions focusing on medical effects of FGC, some scholars have cautioned that many popular beliefs about health risks rest on inconclusive evidence. The way professionals understand and respond to health information about FGC has in this context largely been left unexamined. This article aims to provide a qualitative exploration of how professionals in Sweden approach adolescent sexual and reproductive healthcare encounters in relation to acquired knowledge about FGC, using menstrual pain as an empirical example. The analysis shows that there was a tendency in counselling to differentiate young migrant women's menstrual complaints from ordinary menstrual pain, with professionals understanding pain complaints either in terms of FGC or as culturally influenced. The study shows how professionals navigated their various sources of knowledge where FGC awareness worked as a lens through which young women's health complaints were understood. Biomedical knowledge and culture-specific expectations and assumptions regarding menstrual pain also informed counselling. Finally, the article discusses how FGC awareness about health risks was used constructively as a tool to establish rapport and take a history on both menstrual pain and FGC. The analysis also recognises potential pitfalls of the approaches used, if not based in well-informed policies and interventions in the first place.
