  • Guilt and emptiness : women's experiences of miscarriage
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Health Care for Women International. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0739-9332 .- 1096-4665. ; 25:6, s. 543-560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women who lose an early pregnancy are shocked when they are first given the information that they have miscarried. Later they feel guilt and emptiness. Heideggerian interpretive phenomenology has been used with 13 women from southwest Sweden to uncover their lived experience of miscarriage. Women plan their future with a child during early pregnancy. When miscarriage occurs it is not a gore, an embryo, or a fetus they lose, it is their child. They feel that they are the cause of the miscarriage through something they have done, eaten, or thought. They feel abandonment and they grieve for their profound loss; they are actually in bereavement.

  • Transforming the Exhausting to Energizing Process of Being A Good Parent in the Face of Cancer
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Health Care for Women International. - 0739-9332 .- 1096-4665. ; 21:6, s. 485-499
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim in this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between women who have been treated for breast cancer and their children. The focus was on how they deal with being a mother at the same time attending to their own needs. The main strategies of the grounded theory method were used to conceptualize the interactive process involved. Nine women, with children aged 4 to 23, living at home at the time of diagnosis, were interviewed. By the process of constant comparative analysis, the main theme that seemed to capture how the lives of these women had changed was transforming the exhausting-to-energizing process in being a good parent in the face of cancer. This theme is related to Meleis's concept of health–illness transition. The findings here indicate the need for family counseling, with special attention paid to the single parent with cancer.

  • Self-rated health in women after their first myocardial infarction : A 12-month comparison between participation and nonparticipation in a cardiac rehabilitation programme
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Health Care for Women International. - London : Routledge. - 0739-9332 .- 1096-4665. ; 21:8, s. 727-738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compared self-rated health among women who voluntarily did and did not participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP) within 12 mo after their 1st myocardial infarction (MI). A nonrandomized evaluation study design including a pre- and posttest was implemented in 18 acute hospitals in the southwestern part of Sweden. 240 consecutively chosen women suffering their 1st MI at age 35-70 yrs completed 2 self-rated questionnaires at the onset of the MI and 12 mo later. The results showed that about 50% of the women took part in a CRP. Women who participated in a CRP reported more medical problems, such as anginal pain, and received more interventional cardiology 12 mo after the MI. Irrespective of participation in a CRP, the women succeeded with behavioral changes, such as giving up smoking, starting exercising, and becoming more diet conscious. The only benefits identified, related to CRP participation, were a higher back to work rate and normalized BP. These findings suggest that today's CRPs are not adapted to females in that they neither offer emotional support in the short term nor support a feeling of belonging in the long term and that the health care professionals are not aware of this.

  • The lived experience of genital warts : The Swedish example
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Health Care for Women International. - : Routledge. - 0739-9332 .- 1096-4665. ; 25:5, s. 489-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our aim in this study was to analyze and describe young Swedish women's experiences of living with genital warts. Interviews with 10 young women, aged 16-21 years, were interpreted within a lifeworld hermeneutic tradition. The women experience themselves as victims of a disgusting disease. Furthermore, they appear to disregard the fact that their own lifestyles could be a risk factor for contracting venereal infections. On the other hand they get to know their bodies better after the gynecological examinations where the treatment begins. Their loss of innocence is considerable; thus it seems fair to compare this experience with earlier epochs' ideas about loss of virginity due to the first intercourse. Consequently the young women also start looking at themselves as adults, and they take responsibility for the consequences of their sexuality.

  • Getting no respect : Barriers to mammography for a group of Swedish women
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Health Care for Women International. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0739-9332 .- 1096-4665. ; 24:1, s. 8-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mammography screening is a highly sensitive and specific method to detect breast cancer at an early stage. If screening campaigns are to be cost effective, compliance is valuable. However, many women do not attend when called for mammography screening. Our aim in this study is to understand and explain why women become nonattenders. A sample of 16 nonattending women, aged between 43 and 73 years, participated in this qualitative study, by interviews or written comments. The core category discovered in the data was "getting no respect." The informants did not feel respected from either the society or the health care system. Below this core category, two categories were identified: the mammography examination and affecting circumstances. The performance and its effects comprised the content of the category of mammography examination. The category affecting circimstances included knowledge about risk factors, prevention, and practical or emotional arguments.

  • Adaptation of health care seeking behavior during childbirth : Focus group discussions with women living in the suburban areas of Luanda, Angola
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Health Care for Women International. - New York, NY : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0739-9332 .- 1096-4665. ; 25:3, s. 255-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to explore how various factors influenced women's decisions regarding place of confinement in Luanda, Angola. Ten focus group discussions were conducted with pregnant and nonpregnant women residing in suburban areas of Luanda and the data were analyzed using the grounded theory technique. Four patterns of action of the main theme, "the molding of women'scare-seeking behavior during childbirth," were identified: (I) the "labor process 'on-course' avoiding pattern"; (II) the "labor process 'off-course' avoiding pattern"; (III) the "labor process 'on-course' approaching pattern"; and (IV) the "labor process 'off-course' approaching pattern." Our findings indicate that personal "courage" and social support empowered women and impacted on their preference for home birth, whereas demand for informal user fees and perceived low quality of care influenced women to avoid institutional care during childbirth, sometimes even in spite ofcomplications. Ability to meet demands for informal user fees and knowledge of childbirth influenced women to seek institutional care. The study highlights the need to improve the quality of available maternal health care addressing the implicit educational, attitudinal, and ethical issues.
