- The modern chest freezer has significantly altered food storage practices in Sweden. Based on 13 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Arjeplog (rural Northern Sweden/ Swedish Sápmi), this article investigates how the chest freezer plays a crucial role in more-than-human networks of food, sustainability, and living well in the local community. Among participants of this ethnographic study, most of the protein stored in freezers was hunted or foraged from the local landscape, and participants felt “rich and content” with freezers full of “natural” food. Building on theories of new-materiality and the more-than-human, I examine the relationships between moose, freezer, forest, and the body, arguing that the chest freezer is not a static object of symbolic meaning but a vibrant actor in these networks of “the good life”. This paper is an empirically grounded contribution to studies of freezing practices and landscape relations in Northern Sweden.

- Established ideas about state responsibility and state violence are placed in a new light in times characterized as states of emergency. The following conversation addresses the role of the state in the safeguarding of public health, taking its departure in media debates and political debates about state responsibility in two countries that have been criticized for not taking strong enough measures to protect the very futuriority of the nation in times of a pandemic Sweden and Nicaragua. Both countries have been castigated for avoiding total lockdown and for having taken a passive approach to what Wendy Brown has called “the political management of the virus” (Brown 2020). At the same time, the rhetoric used to describe their respective strategies has differed vastly in dialogue we explore notions about governance, biopolitics and necropolitics as they are articulated and negotiated in national contexts that claim the label social democracies. One of the points of departure is that while the response to Covid-19 is often described in war metaphors, and hence as a state of emergency, the unjust and unequal distribution of life and death is by no means exceptional.

- In several parts of Sweden, difficulties arise regarding access to water. In this article, I explore the biopoliticsthat take shape when low groundwater levels are turned into an object of government. Firstly, I examinethe formation of a so-called anatomical politics which refers to a disciplining form of power in which theresponsibilities and actions of the population are at the center. Secondly, I explore the priorities that are madein the political work where human life, health, and well-being are to be protected and other life forms that arenot vital for human living are instead deprioritized or allowed to die. The problems have clear consequencesbut do not pose a threat to human survival. Political efforts aim to bring about changes in people’s everydaylives and affect the use and decoration of households and public spaces. Empirically, I attach particularsignificance to the irrigation bans that Swedish municipalities can introduce to reduce water consumption.

- This is an introduction to a thematic issue on the concept of class, in celebration of Professor Mats Lindqvist, who unfailingly and successfully has argued the relevance of including the social organisation of economic practice and class into Swedish ethnology. In the text, two basic tenets of general class theory are laid out. One drawing from the "historical materialist" and "dialectical", marxist tradition, and the other from a more "scalar" and "situational", weberian canon. These are then used as analytical tools to understand the development of class studies within the discipline of ethnology. While illustrating how Swedish ethnological studies, with their preoccupation with the situational social construction of meaning has come to prioritise the scalar before the dialectical, the author provokingly argues that any substantial critique of the current socio-economical formation that might have existed within the discipline before, has seemingly diminished.

- The sagas of Icelanders contain a great wealth of personal names both of historical and fictional nature. Personal names function both as identifiers for individuals but also evoke associations that supersede the name’s lexical or identifying meaning, for example, cultural or social associations such as age, ethnicity, and ideology. This article examines personal names as a source within a source and appraises the use of literary and socio-onomastics in the context of the Íslendingasögur using the example of the elusive difference between “Icelanders” and “Norwegians” in the sagas. The onomastic analysis is based on seven shorter tales and explores the differences in personal names in Icelandic and Norwegian individuals. Based on the onomastic data gathered, this article concludes that there are certain regional differences in name-giving visible in the sagas and that saga authors either had authentic onomastic material at hand or tried to emulate realistic personal names.

- I och med att hästen tar allt större plats i det peri-urbana landskapet sker det en omstrukturering av både det sociala och det fysiska landskapet. Denna ”hästifiering” omfattar ofta en typ av livsstilsmigration, där den peri-urbana landsbygdens nya invånare och inpendlare (hästägarna) omvandlar miljön. Hästarnas ökade närvaro påverkar nämligen både det privata och det offentliga rummet. Med stöd i över 30 intervjuer konstaterar studien att denna omstrukturering av det peri-urbana landskapet skapar konflikter mellan ”nya” (livsstilsmigranter, hästägare) och de ”gamla” som bott där sedan tidigare (jordbrukare och markägare), vilket kan tolkas som motsättningar mellan grupper med olika ideologier och värderingar där rurala förhållningssätt utmanas av en urban norm. En central aspekt av dessa ”kulturkrockar” är att en urban norm om landskapet som yta för konsumtion och rekreation ofta står i motsatsställning till rurala värderingar och praktiker där landskapet i högre grad utgör en källa till försörjning.
