  • The Gendered Mirror on the Wall : Satisfaction with Physical Appearance and Its Relationship to Global Self-esteem and Psychosomatic Complaints Among Adolescent Boys and Girls
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 26:5, s. 525-541
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study investigated gender differences in satisfaction with physical appearance as a domain-specific aspect of self-esteem, and its association with global self-esteem and psychosomatic complaints. The data used was from the Stockholm School Survey, conducted among ninth grade students (15–16 years), with pooled information from six cross-sectional surveys in 2004–2014 (n = 32,117). Girls reported lower satisfaction with their appearance than boys. Satisfaction with appearance was more strongly associated with global self-esteem among girls, while the association with psychosomatic complaints was similar for both genders. There was a tendency towards a decline in satisfaction with appearance at the end of the study period for both genders, albeit more strong for girls. We conclude that satisfaction with appearance may contribute to our understanding of poor mental well-being among adolescent girls.

  • Young People’s Political Participation : A Public Pedagogy Challenge at the Municipal Level
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 26:2, s. 179-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In established democracies, a public pedagogy challenge for municipalities is to create, integrate and expand opportunities for young people’s political participation in decision-making. These opportunities are guided by different reasons, values and explanations as to why young people’s political participation is important. This article contributes empirical knowledge about the motives that direct young people’s political participation in decision-making at the municipal level. By means of a case study in a municipality in the west of Sweden, three recurrent motives have been identified: political participation as a means, democratic fostering and an intrinsic value. Based on political socialization theory, empirical findings and previous research, two major challenges in youth policy work are identified and discussed in terms of public pedagogy.

  • An Endeavour for Autonomy : How Girls Understand Their Lived Experiences of Being Referred to Secure Care
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 26:1, s. 70-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In discussion of troubled adolescent girls, their mental health often is in focus and a discourse constructing girls as vulnerable victims therefore dominates Swedish social services and secure care. This article is an investigation of how the girls themselves are navigating the discursive terrain where understandings of troubled adolescent girls in secure care are regulated. The results show that even though the girls' stories show considerable similarities with what is previously known about troubled adolescent girls, their understandings of their lived experiences differ. The girls resist the dominating discourses that view them as victims by emphasizing their autonomy and own responsibility. However, in trying to distance themselves from devaluing interpretations, they take an attitude that ultimately obstructs their possibilities of getting help, since it inevitably puts them in opposition to the care system.

  • Movies and the Enchanted Mind : Emotional Comprehension and Spiritual Meaning Making Among Young Adults in Contemporary Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 25:1, s. 8-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The outcome of an empirical audience study in Sweden including questionnaires, focus groups and ten in-depth individual interviews discussing favorite films supports claims about viewers as active and playful (cf. Frampton 2006, Hoover 2006, Plantinga 2009). The soft side of mediatization processes is illustrated showing young adults experiencing enchantment through films (Jerslev 2006, Partridge 2008, Klinger 2008, Oliver & Hartmann 2010). The outcome is in line with a growing number of empirical case studies which support conclusions that both thinking and behavior are affected by film watching (Marsh 2007, Suckfüll 2010, Oliver & Hartmann 2010, Axelson 2014). The results of the interviews exploring specific scenes of idiosyncratic relevance support theories about fiction films as important sources for moral and spiritual reflection (Partridge 2004, Zillman 2005, Lynch 2007, Plantinga 2009).  The concept thick viewing is proposed for capturing these moments of film experience when profound and enchanted emotional interpretations take place.

  • Young Peoples Strategies for Handling Economic Adversity : Extending the Research Agenda
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 24:4, s. 309-325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As an extension of the research into strategies for handling economic adversity of young people in poor families, this study examines strategy use in the context of middle-income families affected by unemployment. Interviews with 39 young people in previously comfortably-off families where one or both of the parents had become unemployed were conducted. The purpose was to explore how, in a Swedish context, young people think about and respond to situations following a drastic reduction in family income. Results indicate that while the strategies used by these young people are generally similar to those in poor families, no use of avoidance-oriented strategies was found. This, it is argued, is because parental unemployment and financial adversity are not perceived as stigmatizing.

  • Between responsibility and positioning – a study about young people’s interactions in social media
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 27:1, s. 1-17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines young people’s argumentation about their communication in social media. The purpose is to uncover what is taken for granted in their experiences and illuminate discursive patterns in their representation of everyday life online. 32 youths (14-15 years old) were interviewed. The result shows that there are three discourses involved that in different ways condition the youths’ acting space online. The discourses are called ‘taking responsibility’, ‘saving face’ and ‘social positioning’. There is a struggle between the discourses and they take on different power positions depending on the relation between three parameters: with whom the interaction takes place, the content that is to be published and the online characteristics. The discourse ‘taking responsibility’ is superior in interactions with close friends, unlike interactions with peripheral friends, where ‘social positioning’ is superior. The discourse ‘saving face’ is found in interactions with both close and peripheral friends.

  • Digital Gaming and Young People's Friendships : A Mixed Methods Study of Time Use and Gaming in School
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 27:1, s. 32-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this mixed methods study, we investigate the impact of digital gaming on school social life among young people (17-19 year old) by combining over-time data investigating friendships as they form, with subjective experiences of friendships. We draw on one full cohort of Swedish pupils surveyed on three occasions during their first year in upper-secondary school (n = 115) and one interview sample of 10 game users. Results indicate that how much time young people spend on gaming is not a significant factor for friendship formation in the studied sample. Moreover, high-use did not make game users socially isolated or less popular in school. We discuss how young people adhere to ideals of responsible leisure in order to become adults; practising time-management strategies to make place for time-consuming leisure while not letting it impact personal relationships.

  • 'I Got to Know Myself Better, My Failings and Faults' : Young People's Understandings of being Assessed in Secure Accommodation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 25:2, s. 124-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores young people's understandings of assessments conducted in secure accommodation. The concepts of institutional identity' and text-mediated' actions have been used in the analysis. The main empirical material is repeated interviews with assessed young people during a two-year period. In the findings, the stories of three young people display understandings of appreciation, disappointment and self-development. The assessments seem to have made the youths aware of their failings and faults'. An analysis of the written assessments found institutional identities of inner problems and unstructured everyday lives'. In conclusion, the young people's understandings of the meanings and implications of the assessments are suggested to be connected to the caseworkers' text-mediated actions and their position in the assessment process. The young people's stories indicate the need to consider the institutional context of the assessments and to acknowledge young people's efforts in care.

  • The ‘Old Gym’ and the ‘Boys’ Changing Rooms’ – The Performative and Pleasurable Spaces of Boys’ Physical Education
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 25:4 Supplement S, s. 36S-53S
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines how space and pleasure are discursively interlinked in boys’performances of gender in school physical education (PE). Although previousresearch has implicated spaces in the production of gendered identities and unequalpower relations, there exists a gap in the current literature focusing on how spacealso contributes to pleasure in PE. This article draws on an ethnographic accountof boys’ PE, and Gregson and Rose’s (2000) concept of ‘performative space’, anextension of Butler’s (1990) notion of performativity, to illustrate how the preexistingspaces of PE come to matter or become meaningful through the boys’performances with/in those spaces. I argue that the boys derive pleasures as theproductive effect of the power (Foucault, 1985) articulated in and through thespaces of PE. This article accordingly contributes to understandings of the complexnature of how PE is constituted and constitutive of gendered performances, spacesand pleasures.

  • From Generalized Trust to Street Smart : Secondary School Students in Stockholm on Social Trust
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1103-3088 .- 1741-3222. ; 27:3, s. 205-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyses the validity of the standard question, ‘Generally speaking, would you say that most people can be trusted, or that you can’t be too careful in dealing with people?’. It builds on unique material, including survey responses (N = 356) and letters (N = 28) from students aged 18–19 years, collected by the author in seven secondary schools in Stockholm. The results suggest that the standard question is less valid as a measure on generalized trust than is commonly assumed in trust research. Rather than referring to trust in people in general, about a third of the responses expressed themes related to rational trust, that is, trust is domain-specific and person-specific. Systematic variation between different school contexts indicates that the standard question reflects social trust in a limited social sphere rather than trust in ‘most people’. The conclusion is that the standard trust question has a problem with validity among young respondents.
