    • In this Letter, the design of a 3D printed fully dielectric Gutman lens is presented. The authors demonstrate the feasibility of using highly accessible and cheap additive manufacturing technology to produce a compact and high performing antenna lens. The lens is designed to operate at Ku band and utilises a flat feed surface that approximates the focal sphere. The flat feed surface allows for beam steering that requires only translational movement of the feed. The lens has a measured realised gain of 20 dBi with 3 dB scan loss at +45°. The lens finds applications in systems that require high gain antennas, such as the new generation of satellite and 5G communications and radar technology.

    • A simple and compact directional dual-band semi-circular inverted-F antenna for wireless local area network applications is reported. Two pairs of semi-circular slots as well as a pair of arms are employed to generate the dual resonances in the 2.4-2.48 and 5.2-5.8 GHz bands. The measured results show that the proposed antenna can provide two 10 dB impedance bandwidths of 160 MHz (2.40-2.56 GHz) and 900 MHz (4.95-5.85 GHz). Nearly constant directivities (about 4.7 dBi) are observed in the lower band, while directivities in the upper band vary between 6.3 and 8.6 dBi.

    • A low complexity soft-decision decoding technique is presented for Reed-Solomon codes, over magnetic recording channels (MRC), by considering symbol and bit reliability, jointly. A symbol detection scheme for burst error scenarios has been put forward for the iterative error-and-erasure decoding algorithm (IEED), which is based on multiple trials, and is a combination of the generalised minimum distance and Chase-2 decoding schemes. In order to decrease complexity, the decoding test patterns are used in a certain order, while the stopping criteria is also discussed. Simulations show that the proposed algorithms can achieve almost the same performance as that of IEED for the additive white Gaussian noise channel and slightly better performance in MRC, but with significantly less complexity.

    • In this work, the authors present two transimpedance amplifier (TIA) circuits designed for fibre optical interconnect systems. They compare a common base (CB) topology with a common emitter (CE) shunt shunt feedback topology in terms of frequency response, power consumption, noise, and input impedance. The two TIAs are designed on a 130 nm indium phosphide double heterojunction bipolar transistor technology from Teledyne Scientific Company (TSC) with an 1 f(t)/f(max). of 520 GHz/1.15 TED and are measured in the frequency and time domains. They exhibit a transimpedance gain of 42 dBS2 with a 133 GHz bandwidth, the highest bandwidth reported in the literature and power consumption of 32.3 nikV tqr the C13 and 25.5 mW for the CE. Eye diagram measurements were conducted up to 64 Ghps and input referred noise density was measured at 30.2 pAh/root Hz for the CB and 13.9 pA.root Hz for the CE.

    • This paper demonstrates the feasibility and very good performance of a kilowatt-level power amplifier in a single-ended architecture, intended for energy systems. The prototype is designed at 352 MHz for the ESS LINAC and delivers 1250 W with 71% efficiency in pulsed operation with a duty cycle of 5%, 3.5 ms pulse at 14 Hz repetition.

    • To design a dynamic correlated channel simulator which can precisely depict the space-time correlation properties and be suitable for the massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, a 2D autoregressive (2D AR) model-based method is proposed. Specifically, by exploiting stationarity in space-time domain, the authors use 2D AR method to create the space-time channel matrices of every user separately. In this way, the space-time dimension of the simulated channel can be modified flexibly without rebuilding the 2D AR model, and spatial correlation matrix with excessively big size is not necessary to guarantee the accuracy of the proposed simulator, making it suitable for massive MU-MIMO system. Simulation results verify the advantages of the proposed simulator.

    • In this Letter, the preliminary study on the progression of osteoporosis using ultra wide band radar technique suggesting two different cases, (1) For various bone thickness and (2) For different effective permittivity is presented. To monitor the progression of osteoporosis, resistively loaded dipole antenna was designed and used as a sensor. For use in targets representing intermediate stages of progression, methanol, ethanol, water, and wood were used for emulating effective dielectric constant of bone in real situation. Measurement results show consistent decrease in the enveloped difference voltage in the two cases which correlate to the loss of bone mineral density. In the future, these results will be useful for people with osteoporosis to predict fractures in advance.
