- Traditionally child health care (CHC) has been an arena where mothers and nurses meet, but in recent years fathers are entering CHC with increasing frequency. The aim of this study was to describe nurses’ experiences of fathers’ participation in CHC. Nine Swedish nurses working in CHC were interviewed and asked to give a description of their experiences from meetings with fathers in CHC. Phenomenology according to Giorgi was used for the analysis and the essence of the findings was that father participation was seen from the perspective of mother participation and was constantly compared to mother participation in CHC. The essence is explicated in the following themes: participation through activities; equal participation although diverse; influence of structures in society; and strengthening participation. Clinical implications include the need for creating a separate identity in CHC for fathers and more communication directed at fathers.

- The purpose of this study was to describe parents' attitudes to smoking and their experience of the tobacco preventive work in antenatal care and in Child Health Care (CHC) in Sweden. A population based survey in which 62 percent of 3000 randomly selected parents with 1- and 3-year-old children answered a questionnaire. Fifty-six percent stated that smoking was registered in the health record of the child yet no further discussion regarding passive smoking took place. The parents' educational level and smoking status was related to the attitudes and experiences of the tobacco preventive work. The results indicated that the dialogue with parents regarding children and environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure has to be redesigned and intensified in order to meet the needs of parents with different backgrounds.

- Children's participation in decision-making in the health care setting is complex because parents and health professionals tend to take a protective stance towards children to act in their best interest. Children prefer to be protected in some situations and to share decision-making in others. Adults in the health care setting need to consider children as individuals, rather than as a homogenous group, and take into account that a child's competence and preferences will depend on the circumstances in every situation. This article argues for a situational perspective of children's participation to act in the child's best interest and to balance protection with shared decision-making, according to children's rights and desires.

- This study aims to capture parental descriptions of how siblings take leave of and mourn a stillborn brother or sister and how their parents support them. Data were collected by questionnaires from 16 parents of siblings to a stillborn child one year after the stillbirth. Data were analysed numerically for the multiple-choice questions and content analysis was used for parental comments and descriptions. The results describe siblings’ farewell to a stillborn brother or sister and how their parents in the midst of their own grief were involved in supporting siblings’ wellbeing, and observed their mourning reactions. Although the findings need to be interpreted with caution, they may provide insight that enables staff to become more sensitive to the whole family experience in the practice of their profession. Further research into siblings’ grief and parental support after stillbirth is crucial so that further light may be shed on their situation.

- In the current study, we investigated the occurrence of posttraumatic growth (PTG) among parents whose children had had stem cell transplantation (SCT) and survived. Although SCT is well established, it remains stressful and dangerous, and SCT is only performed if there is no other choice of treatment to be considered. A questionnaire batteries including the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Check ListCivilian version and the Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory were sent out to a cross-sectional national sample of parents of children who had had SCT six months or more before the study. The response rate was 66% (n = 281). The data were analyzed in relation to parents' appraisal of the event, gender, and perceived social support. The results confirm that SCT in childhood is an event of extreme adversity for the parents. Indications of PTSD were found among an important minority of the parents. Nevertheless, a large proportion of the parents had experienced growth as a consequence of the child's illness. Appreciation of life and personal strength were the domains with the highest scores. Moreover, a higher level of PTG was correlated with a higher level of posttraumatic stress and with an experience of the trauma as more severe. In summary, the study indicates that PTG is a relevant concept for this group of parents.

- Needle-related procedures are reported to be problematic for children. In a school-based celiac disease screening, 12-year-olds' experiences with relaxation and guided imagery (R-GI) during venipuncture were investigated. One group tried nurse-led R-GI (n = 60) and another group received standard care (SC; n = 49). A mixed method design was applied using short written narratives, facial affective scale (FAS), and visual analog scale (VAS) for pain intensity. Qualitative content analysis highlighted that diversity and contradictions when facing blood tests. FAS scores were significantly lower in the SC group before (p = 0.01), during (p = 0.01), and after (p = 0.01) venipuncture. VAS scores did not differ between the groups. The blood test was mostly experienced as unproblematic, and GI during venipuncture did not decrease pain or affect. However, the fact that a number of children scored high FAS indicates a need for effective methods to help children cope with needle-related school-based procedures.

- Fathers are expected to play an increasing part in the care of children, but fathers are not automatically included in studies of early childhood. In this paper we present Swedish fathers' experiences of child health care. In the study, a total of 237 out of 279 (85%) fathers of small children were telephone interviewed using a structured questionnaire. As many as 165 (70%) had visited the child health centre at some time - 91 (38%) regularly or quite often - and we found an association between visits to the child health centre and physician contacts on account of the child's illness. A common feature throughout was the fathers' positive view of the child health centre and its activities, with as many as 77 percent grading it as very good or good. Sixty-seven fathers (28%) had taken part in a parents' group, and here there was a positive association with being a first-time father and knowing about the child's birth weight and vaccinations. We conclude that professionals must find new ways to get fathers to come to child health care, and especially to parents' groups.

- Short-stay treatment has become a popular form of care as a strategy to cope with increased demands on health care. There is little research that considers children's experiences of acute hospitalisation to a short-stay care facility such as a Paediatric Emergency and Assessment Unit (PEAU). This study explored the experiences of eight children aged 8-10 years. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to investigate the children's own experiences of being hospitalised in a PEAU. Thematic content analyses were used. Three major themes were identified: the children's understanding of disease, treatment and procedures; the children's experiences of health-care personnel and the PEAU and transformation of everyday life into the settings of the hospital. The children identified the hospital stay as an overall positive experience. The children took part in leisure activities as they would at home and enjoyed time together with their parents while in hospital. In their conversations with staff they adapted to professional terms that they did not necessarily understand. They did not differentiate between professionals. Further work should be considered to clarify the consequences of this. This study has provided some limited insight into the child's experiences of acute hospitalisation, which should inform nursing care.

- Almost all parents in Sweden are invited to parental groups organized by the child health service (CHS) during their child's first year, but only 40% chose to attend. The aim of this study was to describe parents' experiences of participating in these parental groups. A total of 143 parents from 71 different parental groups at 27 child health-care (CHC) centres in one Swedish county completed an online questionnaire. A majority of the parents found the parental groups to be meaningful and more than 60% met someone in the group who they socialized with outside the meetings. Parents wanted a greater focus on child-related community information, existential questions, relationships and parenting in general. Group leadership seems to be of significance to how parents in a group connect and whether the parental role is affected. Making CHC nurses more aware of the topics parents desire could help them meet parents' needs. Education and training in group dynamics and group leadership could be of value in further improving the high-quality service CHC nurses already offer parents. More knowledge is needed about what would attract those parents who do not participate.

- The aim was to investigate the correspondence between 352 mother's self-reports about postpartum distress in a questionnaire including an item about distress 18 months after birth and their earlier scores within, on average, 2.5 months of childbirth from a screening with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Mothers who did not reach the EPDS score of 12 points, but reported that they had been sad/depressed after childbirth, were similar in socio-demographic variables to mothers with no outcomes in sadness/depression issues. In items related to negative parenting and perceptions of the child, they presented the same picture as those with high EPDS scores who also reported having been depressed. These results suggest that EPDS does not identify all vulnerable mothers. Complementary methods for detecting mothers at risk of stress and depression need to be developed.
