  • Skolan som ideologiskt slagfält
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Perspektiv på skolans problem. - Lund : Studentlitteratur AB. - 9789144133898 ; , s. 39-53

  • Self-rated mental health and socio-economic background : a study of adolescents in Sweden
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - London : BioMed Central. - 1471-2458. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Adolescents' mental health is a major public health issue. Previous research has shown that socio-economic factors contribute to the health status of adolescents. The present study explores the association between socio-economic status and self-rated mental health among adolescents. Methods: Cross sectional data from the Halmstad Youth Quality of Life cohort was collected in a town in Sweden. In all, 948 adolescents (11-13 younger age group and 14-16 older age group) participated. Information on self-rated mental health was collected from the subscale Psychological functioning in the Minneapolis Manchester Quality of Life instrument. The items were summarized into a total score and dichotomized by the mean. Indicators measuring socio-economic status (SES) were collected in a questionnaire using the Family Affluence Scale (FAS) and additional factors regarding parents' marital status and migration were added. Logistic models were used to analyze the data. Results: Girls were more likely to rate their mental health below the mean compared to boys. With regard to FAS (high, medium, low), there was a significantly increased risk of self-rated mental health below the mean among younger boys in the medium FAS score OR; 2.68 (95% CI 1.35;5.33) and among older boys in the low FAS score OR; 2.37 (1.02;5.52) compared to boys in the high FAS score. No such trend was seen among girls. For younger girls there was a significant protective association between having parents born abroad and self-rated mental health below mean OR: 0.47 (0.24;0.91).Conclusions: A complex pattern of associations between SES and self-rated mental health, divergent between age and gender groups, was shown. The total FAS score was only associated with boys' self-rated mental health in both age groups, whereas parents' migratory status influenced only the girls' self-rated mental health. Because of the different association for girls' and boys' self-rated mental health and SES, other factors than SES should also be considered when investigating and exploring the mental health of adolescents in affluent communities. © 2014 Hutton et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

  • Prediction of Site Index and Age Using Time Series of TanDEM-X Phase Heights
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Remote Sensing. - : MDPI. - 2072-4292. ; 15:17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Site index and stand age are important variables in forestry. Site index describes the growing potential at a given location, expressed as the height that trees can attain at a given age under favorable growing conditions. It is traditionally used to classify forests in terms of future timber yield potential. Stand age is used for the planning of management activities such as thinning and harvest. SI has previously been predicted using remote sensing, but usually relying on either very short time series or repeated ALS acquisitions. In this study, site index and forest stand age were predicted from time series of interferometric TanDEM-X data spanning seven growth seasons in a hemi-boreal forest in Remningstorp, a test site located in southern Sweden. The goal of the study was to see how satellite-based radar time series could be used to estimate site index and stand age. Compared to previous studies, we used a longer time series and applied a penetration depth correction to the phase heights, thereby avoiding the need for calibration using ancillary field or ALS data. The time series consisted of 30 TanDEM-X strip map scenes acquired between 2011 and 2018. Established height development curves were fitted to the time series of TanDEM-X-based top heights. This enabled simultaneous estimation of both age and site index on 91 field plots with a 10 m radius. The RMSE of predicted SI and age were 6.9 m and 38 years for untreated plots when both SI and age were predicted. When predicting SI and the age was known, the RMSE of the predicted SI was 4.0 m. No significant prediction bias was observed for untreated plots, while underestimation of SI and overestimation of age increased with the intensity of treatment.

  • Cardiorespiratory fitness in late adolescence and long-term risk of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis among Swedish men
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Plos One. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated disease and psoriatic arthritis is a common coexisting condition. Cardiorespiratory fitness is the overall capacity to perform exertion exercise. Low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with negative health outcomes. Individuals with psoriasis have lower cardiorespiratory fitness compared with individuals without psoriasis. There are no previous studies exploring the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and new-onset psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Methods With the objective to investigate whether low cardiorespiratory fitness in late adolescence increases the risk for onset of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, a cohort of Swedish men in compulsory military service between 1968 and 2005 was created using data from the Swedish Military Service Conscription Register. Cardiorespiratory fitness, estimated by maximum capacity cycle ergometer testing at conscription, was divided into three groups: high, medium, and low. Diagnoses were obtained using the Swedish National Patient Register and cohort members were followed from conscription until an event, new-onset psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, occurred, or at the latest until 31 December 2016. Cox regression models adjusted for confounders at conscription were used to obtain hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals for incident psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Results During the follow-up period (median follow-up time 31 years, range 0-48 years), 20,679 cases of incident psoriasis and 6,133 cases of incident psoriatic arthritis were found among 1,228,562 men (mean age at baseline 18.3 years). There was a significant association between low cardiorespiratory fitness and incident psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (hazard ratio 1.35 (95% confidence interval 1.26-1.44) and 1.44 (95% confidence interval 1.28-1.63), respectively). Conclusions These novel findings suggest that low cardiorespiratory fitness at an early age is associated with increased risk of incident psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis among men, and highlight the importance of assessing cardiorespiratory fitness early in life.
