  • Bridging the gap - students' information practices in the transition to working life
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information research. - : University of Borås. - 1368-1613. ; 27:Special Issue
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. Due to the increased academisation of earlier vocational educations, higher education faces a dilemma when professional skills are theorised. Therefore, many students experience a gap between academic education and working life. In this study, students' information activities during professional training is explored as well as how they can support students' transition to working life. The aim of this study is to provide more knowledge about how students' information activities contribute to their transition into social communities at the workplace. Method. The empirical material was produced through 22 group interviews and 9 individual interviews with students on higher education programs aimed towards a particular occupation including professional training. Analysis. The analysis was conducted as an interaction between the empirical material, previous research and a practice theoretical approach. Four major themes were identified in the empirical material. Results. During their course of study, students seek, share and use information in different ways. In relation to professional training, their information activities change and develop as they socialise into workplace communities. Conclusions. Students' transition to working life is an ongoing process during academic educations, shown by students' changing information practices connected to professional training. During professional training students consolidate their understanding of workplace practices.

  • Information needs on research data creation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information research. - : Högskolan i Borås. - 1368-1613. ; 27:special issue
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. Researchers’ data related information needs are growing. This paper reports the findings of a study with archaeologists and cultural heritage professionals focussing on data reuse related meta-information needs.Method. Interviews with (N=)10 archaeologists and cultural heritage professionals. Analysis. Qualitative coding and content analysis.Results. Four types of paradata needs (data on processes, e.g. data creation) are identified, including 1) scope, 2) provenance, 3) methods and 4) knowledge organisation and representation paradata. Knowledge organisation and representation paradata has been least explored both in research and practises so far. The findings point to a need to develop the understanding of the needs and means of documentation of knowledge organisation and representation.Conclusions. The findings contribute to the data literacy of researchers producing and using data descriptions, and to the study of how paradata can be created and used. Further, the findings indicate that distance-to-data is a significant parameter in determining whether information needs are continuous or discrete. Further, the most likely type of reuse should guide the level and type of paradata. Finally, the findings underline that in spite of the comprehensiveness of available meta-information, it will be incomplete. Complementary means — including collaboration with data creators and meta-information extraction approaches — are needed to increase information reusability.

  • Platform or infrastructure or both at once? : Detangling the two concept's knotty cross-articulations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1368-1613. ; 27:Special issue
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. With the ever-increasing presence of digital technology and media, scholars have explored the cross-articulations of infrastructure and platform to investigate the contemporary digital landscape. However, cross-articulations of the two concepts vary according to the empirical setting and focus. The present paper investigates the ways the two concepts relate to each other and their relevance to library and information science.Method/analysis. The findings were obtained from a conceptual review of the literature on cross- articulations of infrastructure and platform.Results. The cross-articulations were categorised as the interrelated forms of process and practice: first, cross-articulations are understood as processes that occur separately or simultaneously, altering the dynamic between public and private spheres and highlighting the scale, invisibility, and indispensability. Second, some cross-articulations encompass a practice-discursive dimension, emphasising the relations between different actors. The two selected cross-articulations are sustained by data-generating processes and practices involving both platform and users.Conclusions. Cross-articulations of platform and infrastructure can assist library and information scholars to conceptualise contemporary, datafied information infrastructures. The authors suggest including perspectives on user practices, aligned with the current focus on platforms, in future cross- articulations to gain greater insight into the user-platform dynamic.

  • Understanding information-seeking achievement emotions : exploring a cognitive appraisal theory framework
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information Research. - : Thomas Daniel Wilson. - 1368-1613. ; 27:Special issue, s. 1-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. Given the limited body of literature on information-seeking emotions in library and information science research in general and relative to appraisal theories in an educational context, the findings of this paper will make a valuable conceptual and theoretical contribution to the field. The paper explores a proposed appraisal theory framework for understanding the information-seeking emotions of higher education students in learning and achieving information-seeking skills. Studying this process is crucial for academic success and future research-informed practice. Method. The relevance of applying the framework, Scherer´s (2005) semantic space of emotions and Pekrun´s (2006) control-value theory of achievement emotions, is presented, elucidated and discussed. Concepts, elements, structure and dynamics of the theories are presented. Analysis and results . The framework offers an understanding and explanation of the nature of information-seeking emotions and their interplay with cognitive appraisals in the complex constructivist learning process of achieving information-seeking skills. Conclusion. Viewed together, the framework has the potential to be an appropriate analytical tool to investigate information-seeking emotions in the process of learning and achieving information-seeking skills.

  • Unfolding material constraints and opportunities in biodiversity citizen science information practices
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Conceptions of Library and Information Science, Oslo Metropolitan University, May 29 - June 1, 2022. - Borås : Högskolan i Borås.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. The purpose of this paper is to outline an approach for understanding how information practices in biodiversity citizen science are enabled and constrained through participants’ interactions with material objects such as cameras, artificial intelligence-supported smartphone applications and information systems.Theory. The approach draws on the theory of objectual practice; how knowledge is constructed iteratively through interaction with epistemic objects. Epistemic objects are understood as objects sustained by projections of knowledge, open for interpretation and question-generation, rather than clearly defined things.Empirical context. The approach is empirically contextualised through a study of biodiversity citizen science activities in relation to a bioblitz, a short-term, intensive period of species observations in a given geographical setting. Three empirical units of analysis are to be studied: binoculars, cameras, and loupes for observing species; field guides, identification keys and smartphone applications for identifying species; and standardising, large-scale information systems for reporting identified observations.Concluding discussion The approach opens up for studying how material objects enable and constrain biodiversity citizen science information practices. The objectual practice approach in relation to a multifaceted empirical setting such as biodiversity citizen science extends sociomaterial aspects to citizen science studies by enabling practice-oriented observation and trace investigations of large-scale phenomena.

  • Arenas for conflict or cohesion? : Rethinking public libraries as potentially democratic spheres
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information Research. - : University of Boras, Faculty of Librarianship, Information, Education and IT. - 1368-1613. ; 27:Special Issue
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. In policies and research, public libraries are often put forth as public spheres promoting inclusion and shared values. This article investigates possible implications of replacing the idea of the library as public sphere with a plurality of public spheres, thereby acknowledging existing inequalities and conflicts between adversaries.Method. The paper is conceptual, focusing on deepening the theoretical analysis. Analysis. Fraser’s elaboration on the concept public sphere is utilized alongside Chantal Mouffe’s concept agonism to critically discuss the perception of libraries as public spheres, and to explore the library as a place enabling multiple public spheres where different groups can strengthen their social identity and make claims of power.Results. Two main risks with a consensus-oriented starting point are identified: Firstly, marginalized groups may be silenced when inclusion and shared values are emphasized rather than plurality. Secondly, when cultural and social hierarchies are ignored, the ‘others’ are turned into enemies and antagonism replace agonism.Conclusion. If the notion of libraries as promoters of democracy and inclusion shall not result in upholding the status quo, we must go beyond what we know and make room for pluralistic communities and agonistic conflicts.
