  • Tower Houses in Medieval Scanian Towns
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Lund Archaeological Review. - 1401-2189. ; 26-27, s. 53-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Towers in medieval towns is something normally connected to southern Europe. In Scandinavia, towers are seen as something belonging to castles and residences in the countryside, not to urban milieus. However, they are to be found even in Scandinavian towns. In this paper the existence of private urban tower houses in medieval Scania will be presented and discussed, and a hypothesis about a previously unknown tower house in Lund will be introduced.

  • The Medieval Towers on the Island of Gotland
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Lund Archaeological Review. - 1401-2189. ; 26-27, s. 63-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses early medieval stone towers on Gotland. It summarizes the scholarly interpretations of their functions and dating, and analysis the towers in different spatial settings; towers at farmsteads, at churches and at harbours. Generally, we should see the towers on Gotland as concrete symbols of the presences of different types of elite. The towers at churches and farms reflects the presence of wealthy tradesmen and farmers that for security reasons fortified their farmsteads. In somecases, this included the local church, which was built beside the tower. In other cases they were built by a group of local elite families, in order to serve a more common function. This was most likely the case with the towers at harbours. While the former towers gives a more private and defensive impression, the latter must be seen as more offensive and public. The closed architecture, with few openings, entrances on the second floor, loopholes and crenelated walls clearly shows that the towers were connected to the martial side of medieval society.

  • Ceramic Transition and Actor-Network Theory : The Gyllenkrok House, Lund
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Lund Archaeological Review. - 1401-2189. ; 24-25, s. 27-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the 12th and 13th centuries the pottery assemblages inScandinavia changed from hand-formed into wheel-thrown pottery. Thistransition has not caught much interest among scholars and has usuallybeen explained with economic and functionalistic perspectives. Usingactor-network theory, as applied by Astrid Van Oyen, this paper discussesthe problem of how and why this ceramic transition happened. As a basisfor discussion the case study of a high-status house in Gyllenkrok, Lund,is used. Here the pottery changed entirely following the construction ofthe house. By isolating ancient knowledge systems, i.e. actor-networks,different processes within this complex transition can be subjected todiscourse. This paper draws from cultural hegemony, emulation andentanglement theory to open up the black-boxed knowledge systems, andconsidering that the household in Gyllenkrok only acquired about twonew vessels each generation, I argue that the household inhabitants werepassive in this process.

  • Curation and Reuse : An Experimental Study of Transverse Arrowheads of the Late Scandinavian Mesolithic
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Lund Archaeological Review. - 1401-2189. ; 24-25, s. 53-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims to examine whether it is possible to rework transversearrowheads while still hafted, in order to reuse them. Three series, eachcontaining three arrows, were shot into a target consisting of meat andbone. When possible, the arrowheads were retouched and fired again. The results of the experiments demonstrate that it is possible to reworktransverse arrowheads while they are hafted and that there may be strongstrategic and economic reasons to do so. A discussion of the results andcomparison with archaeological material follows the experiment, whichindicates that reworked arrowheads can be recognized in archaeologicalcontexts and that reworking changes arrowhead morphology. Thissuggests that formal typologies of lithic arrowheads that are based onmorpho-metric shape, and have been considered to reveal chronologicalor cultural affinities, may be flawed.
