  • Optimal pricing and terminal location for a rail-truck intermodal service : a case study
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 14:5, s. 335-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To be competitive with other modes of transport, the railway needs to be cost-effective. In order to become more competitive in the logistics industry, Indian Railways has taken new initiative to improve their operations in recent years. A rail-truck intermodal transportation service for Indian Railways is described in this paper. The main focus of the present research is to optimize the freight rate and terminal location together, in order to minimize the total shipping cost of truckers while ensuring the targeted profit of the railway. A model has been developed for the determination of the optimal freight rate and the corresponding intermodal terminal location. The key regulators of this model are the price sensitivity of the trucker and profit guarantee for railways. A case study was developed on the Delhi - Mumbai freight corridor. An analysis was performed to gain insight into the trade-offs among shipment cost and terminal locations.

  • Integrating the performance management process of on-time delivery with suppliers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 13:3, s. 225-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the importance of integrating the performance management (PM) process of on-time delivery with suppliers and analyses the perceived degree of such integration. It describes how the PM process of on-time delivery is managed in manufacturing companies and compares the integration and management issues of on-time delivery between companies with high and low perceived on-time delivery performance. Analysis is based on a survey study of Swedish manufacturing companies in 10 industrial sectors. The focus is on on-time delivery from the respondents' most important supplier. The PM activities defining metrics, target setting, measurement and analysis are not highly integrated between customers and suppliers when measuring on-time delivery. This is especially true for measurement activity, which is the activity with most issues to manage and integrate. The PM issues most significantly related to high on-time delivery performance were automated data collection, registration and report generation.

  • Utilising the potential of combining local and global supply chains
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 13:4, s. 313-326
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Outsourcing of manufacturing leaves two options for the structuring of the supply network: either complete outsourcing of an item or process, or combining external sourcing and in-house manufacturing. The objective of this paper is to explain the effect on performance of various strategies of combining in-house manufacturing and outsourced manufacturing. The analysis is based on a case study of a European manufacturer (EM) that has outsourced part of its casting processes to Chinese suppliers. The strategieswere tested by means of a simulation study and compared in terms of their effects on inventory performance. The study showed at significance level p

  • Logistics of low cost country sourcing
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 13:2, s. 143-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Increasing globalisation creates new possibilities for sourcing from low cost countries (LCC), but also comes with a range of logistics challenges and issues to be dealt with. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how logistics and its impacts are considered in LCC sourcing decisions. An exploratory multiple case study of industrial product companies engaged in distant LCC sourcing serves as an empirical base. Findings reveal that firms do not explicitly take logistics into account during LCC sourcing decisions. Even if logistics is considered, it is generally in a reactive way and takes a transactional cost focus. Instead, we propose a framework to proactively consider logistics factors in the early stages of LCC sourcing. This is done through identifying product and supplier related logistics factors and their impact on pre-transaction, transaction and post-transaction elements in the Total Cost of Ownership model.

  • An empirical examination of the contents and evolution of the composing factors of logistics enterprise competitiveness: a perspective from China
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 17:6, s. 459-484
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managers and researchers are increasingly interested in the factor that logistics enterprise competitiveness(LEC) has significant effects on the development of Chinese logistics enterprises, especially in view of theenterprise life cycle. This paper investigates the contents and evolution of the composing factors of LEC inChina by a survey. With Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS 15.0) software, the factor analysismethod is used to determine the effects of each factor on LEC. Furthermore, the comparative analysismethod is applied to compare the composing factors of LEC in different types of logistics enterprises andat different enterprise life cycle stages. The results show that factors of LEC according to their descendingimportance level are corporate capabilities, corporate resources, and dynamic mechanism. Three kindsof corporate capabilities (financial management capability, logistics risk control capability, and humanresource management capability) and two kinds of corporate resources (corporate human resources andcorporate culture) have the greatest influence on the development of LEC, but in reality have poor practicalperformance, and hence deserve more consideration from the enterprises.

  • Influence of context on the purchasing process for freight transport services
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 17:3, s. 232-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework for analysing the contextual influence on the configuration of purchasing processes for freight transport services. A conceptual model suggests that three contextual dimensions, purchase task, importance, and service type, influence the different stages of the purchasing process. Data from seven case companies are used to explore the links between contextual factors and how the purchasing of freight transport is performed. Eight different types of context, and their implications for the configuration of the purchasing process, are presented. The framework offers guidance on the configuration of the purchasing process in specific contexts, highlighting, for example, that the level of detail of the specification stage can depend on the type of context.

  • Logistics capabilities for sustainable competitive advantage
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Taylor and Francis. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 14:1, s. 61-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to explore how sustainable competitive advantage is generated in two Swedish best practice companies that successfully exploit logistics as a source for competitive advantage. Using a theoretical framework based on the resource-based view of the firm, this research elaborates on the links between operational and dynamic logistics capabilities and sustainable competitive advantage. The findings conclude that a sustainable competitive advantage is based on a combination of efficient and effective logistics operations and well-functioning, adjusted, in-house-developed IT systems. This operational capability is in turn sustained through five dynamic capabilities: managerial knowledge and presence, cross-functional teamwork, control, learning and supply chain relationships.

  • Who controls the fleet? Initial insights into road freight transport planning and control from an industrial network perspective
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567. ; 16:6, s. 493-505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research in logistics and supply chain management typically considers transport activities between shippers (sender), carriers (transport operators) and customers (recipient). However, a closer look into real-world road freight transport systems reveals more complex constellations involving multiple actors with different functions, leading to a fragmentation of transport planning and control activities and accordingly inefficient execution of road freight transport. The purpose of this paper is to pinpoint and explore the gap between supply chain transport theory and empirical reality in road freight transport control. In order to empirically indicate the complexity of control of road freight transport in supply chains, descriptive statistics of fleets in various countries was compiled and two in-depth case studies were conducted. Our finding is that several nested levels of planning and control have to be managed and our results underline the perception that previous approaches of transport planning and control are suitable for simple governance structures but do not cover complex multiple-actor constellations.
