  • Capturing food logistics: a literature review and research agenda
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 18:1, s. 16-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How to feed the world is a vital question and likewise the importance of food logistics. This paper presents a literature review of the food aspects in logistics research. A total of 159 published papers were identified from 9 logistics and supply chain management journals, whereof 104 focused on food logistics. The papers were categorised into the type of logistics activities studied from the perspective of different food supply chain actors and actor constellations. The papers were also grouped according to which food product characteristics they had highlighted as impacting logistics activities. It was noticed that food products have unique characteristics and that food supply chain actors work in a specific context. Thus, this paper puts forward a comprehensive definition of food logistics: Food logistics analyses logistics activities within a food supply chain context by problematising food product characteristics and by examining the constellation of food supply chain actors.

  • Improving logistics performance in cross-border 3PL relationships
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - United Kingdom : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 20:5, s. 491-513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes guidelines for improving logistics performance in terms of cost efficiency and on-time delivery in shipper–third-party logistics (3PL) provider relationships within an offshore outsourcing context. A conceptual framework is constructed based on a thorough literature review. Empirical data are collected through semi-structured interviews in a single-case study with a dyadic perspective, examining the 3PL relationship between Ericsson of Sweden and Aramex of Saudi Arabia. Accordingly, a revised framework is proposed after illustrating the case and merging the literature with practice. The findings highlight the impact of communication, trust, culture, system compliance, work agreements, and standardisation on cost efficiency and on-time delivery performance. The developed framework illustrates a sequential order for working on these factors to achieve performance improvement. This research is one of the first to propose guidelines for performance improvements within offshore outsourcing of 3PL services.

  • The coordination roles of relief organisations in humanitarian logistics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 19:5, s. 465-485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number of organisations involved in relief work in general and humanitarian logistics specifically is large and increasing, creating new complexity. In this paper we analyse different types of coordination and roles in two case studies of the humanitarian cluster system based on its initial development and the Kenyan Post-election crisis. The different and unclear roles of the organisations create significant problems before and after cluster activation and deactivation. Individual organisations take on many roles in the cluster system and beyond it in terms of coordination. The clarity of the roles affects the need for and ease of coordination. We suggest a simple basic categorisation of roles as a starting point for developing this concept in the field of humanitarian logistics and connect this to coordination.

  • Coordination of efforts in disaster relief supply chains: The moderating role of resource scarcity and redundancy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 21:4, s. 407-430
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Connecting to the ongoing conversation on the importance of effective coordination, in this paper, we empirically examine the impact of key theoretical modes of coordination, i.e. resource sharing, standardization of operations, and synchronization in disaster relief supply chains, on the performance of the humanitarian organizations. Survey data is collected from 101 humanitarian organizations in the emerging countries within Southeast Asia. Data is used to test a conceptually developed model, using structural equation modeling- partial least square (SEMPLS) approach. The results reveal the significant impact of resource sharing and standardization on performance outcomes in terms of resources used, responsiveness, and flexibility, while resource sharing is highly weakened by resource scarcity and redundancy. The managerial implication and recommendations are concluded for the further research.

  • LRN 2016 SPECIAL – high capacity vehicles and modal shift from rail to road : combining macro and micro analyses
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 21:2, s. 115-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses a road transport policy of allowing high capacity vehicles (HCVs) on the roads. The purpose is to examine the effect reduced road transport costs from HCVs can have on a modal shift. Two studies of HCV implementation in Sweden were combined. A micro-based case study modelled the distribution network of a major retailer in scenarios based on actual cost and flow data. A macro analysis was conducted of the cross-elasticity between rail and road combined with detailed price changes for lorries considering the product characteristics in different industries. The results show the long-term effects of HCVs on the modal shift for heavier, and heavier and longer vehicles. The combined approach triangulates the results and highlights the effects of logistics decision-making, transport network characteristics, and time. It emphasises linkages between modal shift and road transport efficiency, price reductions, geographical characteristics, product types, train organisation, and the capacity of HCVs.

  • Packaging logistics in supply chain practice – current state, trade-offs and improvement potential
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics Research and Applications: A Leading Journal of Supply Chain Management. - : Informa UK Limited. ; 19:5, s. 351-368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Packaging affects the logistical and environmental efficiency of supply chains. The purpose is to increase knowledge of the current state, trade-offs and improvement potential of packaging logistics in supply chain practice. The research is based on 22 cases, each of which consists of supply chain mapping and structured interviews with three supply chain actors (manufacturer, distributor and retailer). The paper identifies and explains improvement areas, trade-offs and gaps in packaging systems from a supply chain perspective for the whole packaging system, each packaging level and each actor. The results highlight a supply chain potential of better incorporating the packaging system requirements from actors not responsible for developing or selecting packaging. The paper discusses models for cost and benefit sharing and for identification and decision-making about trade-offs in packaging systems. Companies should collaborate, apply an integrated approach and find new approaches to integrate customers and suppliers into the packaging development process.

  • Influence of freight transport purchasing processes on logistical variables related to CO2 emissions : a case study in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; , s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emissions from freight transport stem from logistical variables such as vehicle utilisation, fuel efficiency, and distance. The purpose is to determine how shippers’ freight transport purchasing processes influence logistical variables. A multiple case study of freight transport purchasing processes was conducted, based on interviews with transport purchasers and providers. Three causes of influence of shippers’ purchasing processes on logistical variables were found: specific requirements, network structure of transport providers, and scope of contract. Specifications by purchasers, especially time requirements, influence several logistical variables (‘mode used’, ‘length of haul’, ‘load factor’, ‘empty running’, and ‘fuel efficiency’). This paper clarifies the implications of transport purchasing on CO2 emissions in terms of logistical variables, which are understood in transportation research and practice. It describes the effects of shippers’ requirements on transport providers’ execution of transport. The results provide a foundation for shippers to discuss their influence on logistical variables with transport providers.

  • Shippers’ opportunities to increase load factor : managing imbalances between required and available capacity
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; , s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Improving load factor is relevant for shippers due to its potential in reducing both transport costs and emissions. The purpose is to structure shippers’ opportunities to increase load factor according to required and available capacity. A framework is developed from literature, and in-depth understanding is provided by three cases, with data mainly collected through semi-structured interviews. Shippers’ opportunities to increase load factor are structured per decreasing, increasing, or reallocating required or available capacity. Required capacity can be changed by adjusting number of items, item characteristics, and how items are combined. Available capacity can be changed by adjusting number and type of units. Changes that improved load factor are described in detail for each case. Load factor is calculated for the packaging and shipping levels. An approach that logistics managers can apply to identify opportunities relevant to their situations is presented. Findings are relevant to researchers within transport efficiency and green logistics.

  • Introducing the paradox theory in logistics and SCM research - examples from a global sourcing context
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Logistics. - : TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD. - 1367-5567 .- 1469-848X. ; 20:5, s. 459-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to introduce and explore the use of paradox theory in a logistics and SCM research context. Although logistics and SCM scholars as well as practitioners have been aware about the existence of paradoxes, they have so far lacked a more formal theoretical framework for further identification and classification of these. Framed in the four general paradox classes of learning, belonging, organising and performing, the paper outlines paradoxes inherent in the global sourcing practices of two case companies. The findings demonstrate the paradox theory to be a useful tool for a systematic illumination and classification of paradoxes valuable for practitioners, researchers as well as teachers in the domain of logistics and SCM. The paradox theory may also help to identify and emphasise inconsistencies among different research fields. This is particularly valuable for research areas built upon multiple research disciplines such as global sourcing. In conclusion, the paper suggests that the paradox theory offers a new lens through which an organisation could be better explored, described and understood.
