  • The entrepreneurial university's influence on commercialisation of academic research : The illustrative case of Chalmers University of Technology
  • 2011
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 12:4, s. 429-444
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to describe how the development of an entrepreneurial university contributes to the commercialisation of research. This is illustrated with the case of Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. The findings show the importance of early pioneers creating a favourable culture from the very beginning of the university’s existence. It also shows the influence of a few key individuals for the developed best practice in the innovation support system, which is to commercialise research by match-making researchers with complementing competences like entrepreneurship students as well as using alumni.

  • Policy entrepreneurs in networks : implementation of two Swedish municipal contact centres from an actor perspective
  • 2014
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - United Kingdom : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 21:3, s. 288-302
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study aims to elaborate on the meanings of policy entrepreneurs and through the conceptualisation analysing implementation of local municipal contact centres - a Swedish local e-governmental initiative. The paper builds on qualitative case studies including interviews, observations and document analysis, all analysed through the perspective of policy entrepreneurs. Local policies are implemented in relation to local cultures, norms and economic structures. The networked governance structure demands entrepreneurial actors to combine resources and interests into a change. Here it is identified both theoretically and practical, two types of such entrepreneurial actors. The issue entrepreneur focuses on the issue as such and focuses on the solution to a single problem. The political entrepreneur, on the other hand, focuses on core values and long term structural changes. The emerging networked governance structure asks for improved knowledge on policy entrepreneurship both for analytical and practical improvements. The findings may provide useful information for municipal e-government planning specifically when planning for implementing contact centres. The study enriches the existing literature on policy entrepreneurs in networks expanding the roles to include also local e-government contexts.

  • Using self–employment as proxy for entrepreneurship : some empirical caveats
  • 2012
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : Inderscience. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 17:3, s. 290-303
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Self–employment is the most frequently used measure of entrepreneurship. However, its definition varies between countries, which makes comparisons difficult. We present an analysis of Swedish self–employment data and show that even within one country, the depicted development differs greatly depending on the source used. Unlike previous claims in cross–country studies, we find that there is no basis for categorising Sweden as having increased its self–employment rate more than others. This demonstrates a need to carefully specify the characteristics of the data, and their advantages and disadvantages, before drawing conclusions about the frequency of entrepreneurship in different countries.

  • Governance in small firms - A country comparison of current practices
  • 2014
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 21:1, s. 16-32
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study investigates the practice of governance in small firms and shows differences between these firms in the principality of Liechtenstein and Scotland. Thereby, the study's intention is to draw particular attention to the influence of corporate governance on the firm's ability to change. Thus a broader scope of corporate governance, which is normally discussed from a control perspective, is taken. Using data from semi-structured interviews with 20 managing directors of small firms, the findings showed that they see corporate governance more as a concept for managing the internal and external relationships with the various stakeholders than as a control concept. The study provides fresh insights into the practice of governance in small firms and offers the opportunity to expand our understanding of the topic in different parts of the world. Moreover, by taking a qualitative research approach, the study addresses recent calls concerning more methodological diversity. Copyright © 2014 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

  • How female entrepreneurs learn and acquire (business relevant) knowledge
  • 2010
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 10:1, s. 65-82
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • There is still a gender gap in entrepreneurship, with only 30% of all business founders being women. One important question in this regard concerns how female entrepreneurs learn and acquire business-relevant knowledge. Individual learning processes are affected by individual sense making and cognitions, implying that amongst the other factors at the individual and environmental levels, gender is a factor influencing entrepreneurial learning. However, a gender perspective has been neglected in recent research on entrepreneurial learning and opportunity recognition. The paper concentrates on conceptually and empirically introducing this gender perspective. We explore the main influences on the entrepreneurial learning of female entrepreneurs and the determinants and triggers that impact female learning. Regarding the implications for entrepreneurship research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of what constitutes the specificities of female entrepreneurship in the frame of entrepreneurial learning and opportunity recognition.

  • Patents and entrepreneurship: The impact of opportunity, motivation and ability
  • 2013
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1741-8054 .- 1476-1297. ; 19:2, s. 142-166
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this study, we examine individual patent holders and the fate of their inventions. A unique database consisting of over 800 private individuals who have obtained decision rights over a new technology in Sweden is used to analyse how opportunity and individual level characteristics are related to the likelihood that patented inventions are commercialised in a new or existing small firm. Our findings show that the likelihood that patent holders commercialise inventions through such an entrepreneurial mode is influenced by opportunity novelty and the perceived entrepreneurial ability of the individual.

  • The influence of the entrepreneur’s background on the behaviour and development of born globals’ internationalisation processes
  • 2012
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 15:2, s. 136-153
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • While much of the research on small firm internationalisation has concentrated on export strategies, little attention has been paid to understanding the process and conditions under which the entrepreneur identifies and exploits an opportunity. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the entrepreneur's prior life story and the development and behaviour of his or her born global firm. Six years of intense qualitative field research, including 108 interviews from three entrepreneurial 'born global' firms are compared and contrasted within our theoretical framework. In this study empirical evidence suggests that a person's childhood and prior life story directly influences the behaviour of the entrepreneur. We propose that different types of entrepreneurs are important factors to understand firms' different internationalization patterns. Depending on the backgrounds of the entrepreneurs, they developed preferences, skills, and especially desires that will affect the total behaviour of their future organisations. • The impact of managers' attitudes on SMEs' growth in northern Sweden
  • 2013
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 18:3, s. 298-312
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper examines the impact of managers' attitudes to growth on the realised growth in a sample of 1,416 small firms in northern Sweden. The findings demonstrate a positive relationship between the managers' attitudes and the actual growth outcomes. Zero-growth firms turned out different from both positive- and negative- growth firms with regard to managers' attitude towards growth as a competitive necessity. The owners of zero-growth firms perceived their firms as a primary source of income and employment. Our findings, therefore, provide indications of how attitudes affect outcomes among SMES that aspire to grow.

  • The impact of managers’ attitudes on SMEs’ growth in northern Sweden
  • 2013
  • In: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - 1741-8054 .- 1476-1297. ; 18:3, s. 298-312
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the link between managers’ attitudes towards growth and consecutive realized growth.Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire to 4573 SMEs (35 % response rate) was used to measure growth attitudes. Realized growth was measured using four years of annual report data (2-year pre survey and 2-year post survey).Findings – Our findings provide indications that managers’ attitudes towards growth have a positive relationship to actual growth outcomes. Our results also show that zero-growth firms are different from both positive- and negative- growth firms with regard to attitude towards growth.Research limitations/implications – This study suggests that attitudes are a factor to consider when trying to stimulate growth and that it is important to consider zero-growth firm different nature. Our longitudinal approach overcomes some of the limitation of previous (cross-section) research in the area. Future research could also expand the analysis over a longer period and covering other cultural settings. Originality/value – Our analysis of the relationship between attitudes towards growth and actual outcomes extends the earlier work on the relationship between attitudes and intentions to grow. Furthermore, this paper advances the development of appropriate measurements for analyses of growth and attitudes to growth.
