  • Patients' views of the quality of Danish forensic psychiatric inpatient care
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Routledge. - 1478-9949 .- 1478-9957. ; 27:4, s. 551-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study describes the quality of psychiatric care among forensic inpatients in Denmark who answered the Danish version of the Quality in Psychiatric Care-Forensic In-Patient (QPC-FIP) instrument. A sample of 143 patients (response rate 53%) from 25 of the 27 specialized forensic units in Denmark participated in the study. The patients' ratings of the quality of care were generally high. The highest rating was found for the quality of the secluded environment and the lowest for patient participation in the care. The results showed that several factors influenced the patients' ratings. Women rated the quality of care lower in comparison to men. Patients living together with someone before admission, patients with a lower level of education, and patients who were better informed regarding their diagnosis, who was the responsible physician, and where to complain rated the quality of care higher. We can recommend the use of the Danish version of the QPC-FIP instrument for measuring and improving the quality of care in forensic inpatient care.

  • Evaluating the utility of ‘strength’ items when assessing the risk of young offenders
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1478-9949 .- 1478-9957. ; 29:4, s. 597-616
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is emerging recognition that positive or pro-social characteristics may lessen criminal propensity. There are now several adult and youth forensic instruments that include protective or strength components. Yet evidence supporting the protective capacities of these instruments with youth offending populations is still developing. This study aimed to identity the prevalence of strength items on the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory tool, and their relationships with risk and re-offending for a cohort of 212 multi-cultural Australian juveniles in custody. The prevalence of strengths in the sample was low, and differed by cultural group. Young people who possessed a strength yielded lower instrument total and domain scores and were more likely to be afforded a lower level of risk compared to youth without a strength. Moreover, youth who possessed a strength were significantly more likely to desist from re-offending. This association remained after controlling for level of risk. Findings point to the importance of strengths when assessing a young person’s risk for re-offending.

  • Reading level and the prevalence of a dyslexic profile among patients in a forensic psychiatric clinic
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1478-9949 .- 1478-9957. ; 26:4, s. 532-550
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aims to investigate Swedish language reading ability of forensicpatients and the number of them that present a dyslexia profile. Anotheraim is to compare the reading level in different subtypes of psychiatricdiagnoses. Assessments were made of 185 patients by a battery of readingtests. They were also interviewed about their schooling and theirself-estimated reading and writing ability. The results show that thepatients’ reading level is below average for grade six children in Swedishcompulsory school, and that 16 per cent show a dyslexic profile. Malepatients with an immigrant background and a diagnosis of psychosis andanxiety disorders perform the lowest when measuring literacy skills. Thisproportionately low reading ability can cause difficulties in understandingtexts as presented in broadsheet newspapers, civic information and patientrecords, and might even jeopardize the understanding of adult spokenlanguage.
