  • The Use of Photo-elicitation in Tourism Research - Framing the Backpacker Experience
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 4:3, s. 225-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to elucidate the use of photo-elicitation as a method for data collection as well as a method for analysis. By using a study on backpacker tourism where the respondents’ own photographs were used in in-depth interviews as an example, the immersion of data collection and analysis is illustrated through the backpackers’ narratives and experiences of travel photography. The theoretical point of departure in the study on backpackers was the social construction of the travel experience as liminal, playful and extraordinary. Considering the phenomenon of backpacking tourism as a gradually institutionalized phenomenon, constructing the extraordinary – including authenticity as an important criterion – became, from the backpacker’s perspective, an act of balance between emphasizing individuality and simultaneously conforming to the ideals and norms of the backpacker culture. The contradictory conditions of the backpacker experience were highlighted through narratives on photography and the analysis was focussing on ambivalent experiences. Following Simmel’s dichotomy between individuality and social form, four analytical themes were developed: ‘‘Framing the unique’’, framing the local scene’’, ‘‘catching the moment’’ and ‘‘the deviants among backpackers’’. The first three indicates the photographic and experiental ideals of the backpackers, and the fourth underlines the norms of the backpacking culture through narratives on the deviants.

  • Access to Sami tourism in Northern Sweden
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 1:1, s. 5-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, there has been increased development of indigenous tourism as part of the tourism industry. Even the Sami of Northern Sweden are now engaging in tourism, not least because the restructuring of reindeer herding has forced them into taking up other occupations. The purpose of this article is to analyse the potential of the emerging Sami tourism in Sweden, with special emphasis on access to Sami tourism products. The analysis uses the four H approach outlined by V. L. Smith - habitat, heritage, history and handicraft. The article starts with a short description of the Sami and their culture, followed by a discussion of the relationship between the Sami and tourism in northern Sweden. Smith's concept is then introduced, modified and applied in relation to the new Sami tourism development in the area. The analysis is based on a survey of all 68 Sami tourist attractions and projects in Swedish Lapland in 1999.

  • Estimating and predicting international tourism demand in sweden
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 4:1, s. 59-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we consider a dynamic demand model for international tourism. The model is used to estimate separate demand functions for hotel and cottage visitors from different countries, with a multivariate structural time series model. Among other things, the estimated models are used to simulate the effects on international tourism demand in Sweden of an increase in the value added tax on typical tourism products. The results reveal that the price sensitivity differs considerably between various visitor groups. The largest effect is found for Norwegian visitors, while there is no significant effect for Danish ones. The forecast accuracy of the demand model is also evaluated. The results indicate that a pure structural time series model performs as well as a model with explanatory variables. © 2004 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

  • Swedish and Norwegian Tourism Websites : The Importance of Reservation Services and Value-added Services
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - 1502-2250. ; 1:1, s. 38-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Owing to their intangible and digital character, tourism products in the future are likely to be traded on the electronic marketplace. Travel agencies and tour operators may no longer be needed because tourists will communicate directly with hotels and airlines electronically. To attract customers to the electronic marketplace, tourism business websites will have to oVer reservation facilities and value-added services, and to attain disintermediation in the electronic marketplace, tourism businesses, e.g. hotels and airlines, will have to oVer services similar to those oVered by intermediaries such as travel agencies and tour operators if they are to reduce what customers perceive as risks. In this article, a theoretical framework related to on-line reservations and on-line value-added services in the tourism industry is developed and on this basis six propositions are presented. Results from a content analysis of Swedish and Norwegian tourism websites reveal that while tourism businesses oVer some reservation services, only to a limited extent do they oVer value-added services on the electronic marketplace. Traditional intermediaries such as tour operators and travel agencies oVer more valueadded services on the electronic marketplace than airlines and hotels. The implications of the results are discussed.
